Stephen Robinson says he has no doubt his Motherwell players will avoid complacency against St Mirren.

The Steelmen travel to Paisley on Wednesday night on the back of four straight league wins, but the manager says doing the simple things first will always be the team’s priority.

After another excellent month, youngster David Turnbull is the Tullibardine Motherwell FC player of the month for January.

Having also picked up the award in November and December, the midfielder’s goals against Hibernian and Dundee contributed to him winning the public vote.

Well Society member Drew Nelson came along to Fir Park to present David with his award.

Mark Gillespie says a solid defence and strong attacking options have been the catalyst to Motherwell’s recent upturn in form.

The goalkeeper has contributed to the team’s four consecutive league wins, keeping three clean sheets in the process.

With Motherwell seeking a fourth straight league win, Livingston were the visitors to Fir Park.

Having defeated Hamilton Academical, Hibernian, Dundee and Livingston, Stephen Robinson’s side are looking to string together their best run of results since a five-game winning run in 2016.

Conversely, St Mirren have lost their last five games in the league.

Although only three league positions separate the two sides going into Wednesday’s match, Motherwell currently have an 18-point gap over their opponents.

Sitting in bottom spot, St Mirren have won three, drawn three and lost 18. Motherwell meanwhile have won nine, drawn three and lost twelve.

Mark Gillespie and his defence have stood tall against Hibernian, Dundee and Livingston, returning to the sort of form that saw the team rack up a record 20 clean sheets last campaign.

Plenty change

Ten new faces have arrived in Paisley in the winter transfer window, with 13 heading out.

At the back, manager Oran Kearney has added goalkeepers Václav Hladký and Jordan Holmes, from Slovan Liberec and Bournemouth respectively. They’ve been joined by defenders Mateo Mužek, Mihai Popescu and Laurențiu Corbu.

Greg Tansey has arrived in midfield on loan from Aberdeen, along with fellow loanees Brad Lyons, Anders Dreyer and Kyle McAllister.

Up top, Haitian striker Duckens Nazon has also arrived on loan from Belgians Sint-Truiden.

St Mirren are without a league win in five, with their last Ladbrokes Premiership victory coming at Fir Park in December.

St Johnstone, Kilmarnock, Celtic, Hibernian and Rangers have since defeated them, with an aggregate score of 14-2.

Kearney’s men however did progress in the William Hill Scottish Cup, coming from two goals down to Alloa Athletic to progress 3-2.

In the scrap

St Mirren may be bottom of the table as things stand, but they are anything but cut adrift.

With Dundee sitting two points ahead of them, and Hamilton Academical three, there is plenty scope for a string of results to pull them out of immediate danger.

Jake Hastie scored his first league goals, and Curtis Main also got on the scoresheet, as Motherwell made it four league wins from four by beating Livingston.

Youngster Jake Hastie will take the plaudits for two brilliantly taken goals, but the Steelmen as a whole showed confidence and verve throughout to pull level on points with the visitors.

For the third match in succession, manager Stephen Robinson named an unchanged starting team. The only change came on the bench, with James Scott stepping up to replace the departed Gaël Bigirimana.

Within six minutes, the home side were off and running. A great delivery from David Turnbull from a free kick was met by the head of Hastie, who beat Liam Kelly to grab his second goal in claret and amber.

Six minutes later, it was two. Curtis Main, the scourge of the Livi defenders throughout, was played in by Allan Campbell to the right inside the box. Lifting the ball, he found the top right corner of the net to double the advantage.

A shell shocked Livingston were further put to the sword, as Gboly Ariyibi and Hastie continued to torment from the wide areas.

With 20 minutes gone, Hastie was again on the scoresheet. Picking the ball up deep, he surged at the defence, taking out men in his wake, before cooly slotting home to make it 3-0 in rapid time.

At half time, Livingston rang the changes. A triple substitution saw them increase their physicality in the second period but the game fizzled out into a midfield battle and a succession of half chances for either side.

The biggest chance fell t0 Motherwell. Campbell was set up brilliantly by Main, but his shot was headed off the line, and then Hastie saw his shot at a hat trick just deflected over the bar.

With a minute to spare, Tiffoney saw his shot come back off the post for Livi, but the Steelmen held firm again to record a third consecutive league clean sheet, and a fourth straight win in the Ladbrokes Premiership.
