Motherwell’s Fortunes

That draw against Celtic on Saturday still means it’s team games without a win, however the Steelmen will take massive encouragement into this match.

In that run they have faced Celtic twice, third-placed St Mirren and went to Rugby Park where Kilmarnock hold the best home record in the league.

Jon Obika returned just prior to the international break and got himself on the scoresheet last weekend, his third of the season.

These two sides met on the opening day of the season, a 1-1 draw at Dens Park. Theo Bair scored on his debut that day, before Dundee levelled in the second half.

Opposition Report

Dundee are the Premiership new boys but have adjusted quickly to life in the top flight.

21-year-old left back Owen Beck joined the Dee from Liverpool in the summer and netted his first goal of the season on Saturday against Hibernian.

He has yet to miss a minute this season in the league. Within the ranks at the Dee are former Motherwell men, Trevor Carson and Ricki Lamie, who is on loan and ineligible to play.

Dundee are four points ahead of Motherwell and spot above them in the table, as things stand. They have two wins, two draws and one win on the road this season in the league.

Some would say without a win in nine games, heading to play Celtic at Parkhead is the worst venue and match the team would need, but that was the task that Motherwell faced.

Travelling to the Champions, who had only dropped two points at home all season, was a chance for the team to show their determination and togetherness. Keeping it tight at the back, thanks to Liam Kelly’s saves, Motherwell made it to half time level, having created some opportunities for themselves also.

Celtic made changes at half time and when Bevis Mugabi brought OH down in the area, Luis Palma had the chance to break the deadlock.

Liam Kelly produced a wonderful save to keep the game level.

Celtic received another penalty after a VAR check on a pull from Calum Butcher and former Motherwell man David Turnbull found the back of the net with only four minutes of regulation time remaining.

Jon Obika came off the bench and in the first minute of additional time, nodded home from a Blair Spittal corner to send the small pocked of ‘Well fans into rapture. The Steelmen held out for back-to-back draws at Celtic Park as they look to kickstart their season.

We will face Alloa Athletic in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup.

Ties are due to take place on the weekend of 20 January.

Motherwell’s attacking frustrations persisted on a disappointing return to East Kilbride, as Partick Thistle overturned an early deficit to secure their fifth successive victory at a rainswept K-Park.

Carla Boyce fired Motherwell into the ascendency from the penalty spot, but despite having numerous goalscoring opportunities, the women of steel were unable to capitalise, with Thistle racking up four goals. Kayla Jardine pulled one back in the latter stages, but it proved to be too little too late, as Thistle secured the three points.

Head Coach, Paul Brownlie made one change from the side who acquired their first point on the road to Montrose last weekend, as Kaela McDonald-Nguah returned to the starting XI, with Laura McCartney settling for a place on the bench.

Motherwell came closest to breaking the deadlock in the opening few minutes, as Carla Boyce escaped her marker before racing through on goal, but the strikers low effort was parried clear by Megan Cunningham.

The breakthrough came moments later, as Boyce’s close-range effort flashed across the face of goal, striking an arm in the penalty area. From the resulting spot kick, the forward calmly dispatched her effort into the bottom-right corner.

Motherwell continued to flood the opposing penalty area in search of a second, but the visitors hit on the counter-attack, netting an equaliser on the half hour mark. Amy Bulloch’s chipped delivery caused confusion in the high Motherwell backline, with Imogen Longcake shifting the ball beyond Emily Mutch before placing the ball into the empty net.

Less than two-minutes later, Thistle netted their second of the game, as Longcake found the target for her second of the evening. The striker coolly worked her way towards the edge of the penalty area, before drilling a dangerous effort beyond the reach of Mutch.

The hosts almost secured an instant response, as Boyce raced Cunningham to the ball at the edge of the Thistle penalty area, but the visiting stoppers late lunging tackle diverted the ball before the forward could react.

As the second half resumed, Thistle netted a third. Unmarked at the edge of the box, Rachel Donaldson’s skilful turn allowed the midfielder to shift the ball onto her stronger right-foot before firing an unstoppable strike into the top-right corner.

The visitors came close to a fourth moments later, as Longcake’s low delivery across the face of goal found Demi Falconer lurking in the six-yard box, but Mutch’s incredible reaction save kept the scoreline intact.

However, the fourth came moments later, as Falconer headed home a floated Leah Robinson free-kick to compound the women of steel’s recent frustrations.

Kayla Jardine narrowed the deficit in the final few minutes, with the youngsters header finding the bottom-right corner, but the reaction proved to bee too little too late, as Thistle earned the three points.

Motherwell will now face a short-international break before retuning to face title-chasers Rangers next month.

Motherwell came away from Celtic Park with a point after a dramatic 1-1 draw in Glasgow.

David Turnbull’s penalty four minutes from time looked like giving the home side all three points but substitute Jon Obika had other ideas as he turned in Blair Spittal’s corner kick.

Stuart Kettlewell opted for a defensive set-up with Calum Butcher sitting in front of a back five and the Steelmen limited the hosts to few chances in the first half.

However, when called upon, Liam Kelly looked in fine form with a sensational save from Matt O’Riley then arguably an even better stop to claw the ball away as it came off his own defenders head.

Motherwell looked to hit on the counter and almost broke the deadlock when Harry Paton got forward and forced a good stop from Joe Hart.

Minutes from the break there was another good chance as Blair Spittal got on the end of a long ball forward. His first touch took him past the onrushing Hart but it left him with an awkward height to finish from and the chance was gone.

The second half proved to be a show of defence resilience from the Steelmen.

The Motherwell backline were excellent, repelling all Celtic attacks until the 67th minute when Bevis Mugabi fouled Oh in the box. Steven McLean pointed to the spot in what looked to be a stonewaller.

Luis Palma stepped up with a stuttered run but Liam Kelly came to the rescue again, diving to his right to make a crucial save.

It seemed like the away side would hold on for a point but those hopes looked like they were scuppered when Celtic were awarded another penalty just four minutes from the end of the ninety.

VAR checked a shirt pull at the back post area from Calum Butcher and referee Steven McLean pointed to the spot. Former Motherwell man David Turnbull dispatched from the spot and from there it looked the Steelmen would leave Glasgow empty handed.

However, with just a minute of regulation time left, Blair Spittal’s corner from was glanced in by substitute Jon Obika’s shoulder, to the delight of  the small pocket of Motherwell fans.

The fourth-official signalled ten minutes of added on time – with fears of a repeat of September’s game against Celtic creeping in – but the Motherwell defence were largely untroubled in added time and took a valuable point back to North Lanarkshire.

Motherwell return to action this weekend, looking to kickstart their SWPL campaign after narrowly conceding what could’ve been their first victory on the road to Montrose last weekend.

Chelsie Watson fired the visitors into the ascendency late into the second-half with a precise header from a floated Kayla Jardine delivery, but Montrose rallied late on, and denied Motherwell the three points from the penalty spot.

As the focus shifts firmly to the arrival of Partick Thistle this weekend, Paul Brownlie’s side will look to head into the forthcoming international break on a high.

The women of steel will be poised to reclaim their domestic dominance in East Kilbride after defeats to Aberdeen and Hibernian derailed what has been a magnificent start to the season at K-Park, with the women of steel securing four wins from their opening six.

The hosts’ previous encounter with Sunday’s opponents looked destined to conclude in a goalless stalemate, as both sides defensive displays were on show, until a late Megan Robb strike left Motherwell returning from Glasgow empty-handed.

Brownlie will potentially have more options at his disposal this weekend, as Eve Donald returned to full-contact training in the past week. Morgan Hay will be doubtful for this weekend’s encounter after the defender faced an unexpected setback following a brief return to action after a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Partick Thistle

Brian Graham’s side are in fine form, securing four back-to-back victories in all competitions, netting nine times across that spell. The Jags sit five-points behind defending champions Glasgow City in third, as the Glasgow side look to secure successive top-six finishes.

There will be numerous familiar faces in the red and yellow on Sunday, as Emma Lawton, Kodie Hay and Claire Adams all return to face their former side.

Dan Casey says the international break came at a good time for the team, having not won a game in nine matches. 

The Irish defender says the team will go with a game plan to Glasgow and will try to execute it as best they can.

Manager Stuart Kettlewell says the coaching staff take great encouragement from the two games they have played Celtic so far at Motherwell. 

A 1-1 draw at Celtic Park followed by conceding a last minute goal to lose 2-1 at Fir Park, means the manager wants his players to feel that encouragement that they can get something from the game.

Kettlewell also addressed recent speculation surrounding Kevin van Veen and his desire to return to Scotland from Holland.

Motherwell Women duo Paul Brownlie and Leanne Crichton have made one of their most important signings – by joining the Well Society, and taking membership past the 3700-mark.

They join thousands of others contributing to keep Motherwell FC in fans’ hands.
