Joe Wark will be inducted to our Hall of Fame at our 2021 event.

The last of our delayed 2020 inductees, the club legend takes his place alongside Steven Hammell, John Hunter, Davie Cooper and Andy Paton.

Joe had begun his career in the Ayrshire juniors, running up and down Cochrane Street Park playing in the tangerine and black of Irvine Victoria. It wasn’t long before scouts from the senior ranks all over Scotland were alerted to the performances of the strong, tidy and creative player with a throw-in akin to a corner kick, which led to reports landing on managers desk up and down the country.

It was Motherwell boss Bobby Howitt who made the first move, and Joe was more than happy at the age of 20 to make the Fir Park dressing room his home for the next 16 seasons.

Strangely enough on his debut in a friendly against Tranmere Rovers in a pre-season friendly in October 1947, Joe spent 87 minutes in goal after ‘Well ‘keeper Keith McRae was injured. The clean sheet he achieved was to be the first small step on his journey towards legendary status at our club, as a Jim “Jumbo” Muir double won the game for Motherwell.

The fact that Motherwell had begun season 1968/69 in Scotland’s Division Two probably helped him make the step up in class a little easier. Joe was an ever-present in midfield, driving the club forward in a glorious romp to the title, netting 112 times, conceding 23 and losing a mere two matches along the way.

With Motherwell back in the top flight, Joe would make the left-back berth his own as he launched upon a remarkable career with the Steelmen.

Over 16 seasons he would amass 539 appearances, establishing himself as an all-time club legend. Unfortunately, an appearance in a cup final would elude him, with several heartbreaks in the last four of the major competitions, but memorably featured in several Anglo-Scottish Cup ties in which he shone against World Cup winners like Gordon Banks, Bobby Moore and Martin Peters.

Many Motherwell fans have waxed lyrical over the years desperately trying to describe what Joe meant to this club. On the field, his “Mr Consistency” tag was well earned, as on a weekly basis, he took his “teeth oot”, rolled up his sleeves and went to work, playing the game in the right way.

An immaculate tackler who went his whole career without seeing a red card, his time at Fir Park spanned eight managers, before he hung up his boots at the end of the 1983/84 campaign. It was a travesty that this true legend was never given a full Scotland cap, although he did gain a solitary Scottish League cap against England.

Joe died in 2015, at the age of 67, after a battle with Alzheimer’s. One of Motherwell’s most famous sons now takes his rightful place in our Hall of Fame.

Our Hall of Fame will welcome its new inductees in a special event in November.

Taking place at the Bothwell Bridge Hotel on Saturday 13 November, the event will induct the classes of both 2020 and 2021.

The event is priced at £60 for adults and £30 for children aged under 12.

We will induct both the 2020 and 2021 intake at the event.

We’re asking supporters to bring along items for our food bank collection at our match with Celtic on Saturday 16 October.

We’re collecting items on the day of the game for the Lanarkshire Community Food Partnership and the Motherwell Food Bank.

We are asking all fans to bring what they can to support this important cause, so that those in need can receive a food parcel to help.

The bragging rights in this fixture have been evenly spread in recent times.

County won the last meeting, securing Premiership safety with a comeback 2-1 win on the final day of the 2020/21 campaign.

In the last 10 encounters, Motherwell have won five and County four, with one draw.

Form guide

The Steelmen are on a run of five matches undefeated in the cinch Premiership.

A 1-1 draw with St Johnstone away in week two was followed by wins over Livingston, Dundee and Aberdeen, before Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Rangers.

County are still waiting for their first league win of the 2021/22 campaign, having drawn three and lost three so far.

Last time out, they recovered from an early goal to lead 2-1 against Hearts at home, before being pegged back in an eventual 2-2 draw.

Motherwell suffered a late defeat to Partick Thistle in SWPL1 on Sunday.

Jade Greenshields would fire the hosts in front after 10 minutes, before Lori Gardner levelled minutes later with a well-placed header.

Kaela McDonald-Nguah would then put Motherwell ahead from close range, but Cara McBrearty would pull the hosts level in the second half.

Then, with the match seemingly destined for a draw, Freya MacDonald netted her side a late winner.

The hosts would take the lead early into the first half. Claire Adams’ loose pass was intercepted deep into her own half, and after a quick interchange of play, Greenshields fired her strike past Khym Ramsay into the bottom right corner.

However, Motherwell would find the equaliser minutes later. Kodie Hay’s floated cross found Gardner unmarked at the back post, and the winger’s well-placed header beat the keeper from close range.

The visitors would then take the lead midway through the first half. Leanne Crichton’s long throw was spilled by McGregor, and McDonald-Nguah rifled her strike into the top corner from a few yards out.

Thistle would pull the sides level again minutes into the second half. London Pollard skilfully danced her way past several Motherwell challenges, before playing through teammate McBrearty, who calmly tapped into the empty Motherwell net.

The women of steel toiled in the second half in search of a winner and came close in the latter stages of the game.

Hay’s whipped in cross whistled across the face of goal, and agonisingly missed Adams in the box, who would’ve only required the slightest touch to restore Motherwell’s advantage.

However, Thistle would find the winner in the dying stages of the game. Rosie Slater’s long ball found MacDonald unmarked in the box, and the midfielder’s powerful effort sailed past Ramsay into the top right corner to secure all three points for the hosts.

“We didn’t come here for a point. We wanted a win. But we’re delighted at how we performed.”

Motherwell earned a richly deserved point with a battling 1-1 draw at Ibrox.

Kaiyne Woolery’s second-half goal was the least the Steelmen deserved, having fallen behind in controversial circumstances to Fashion Sakala’s first-half header.

Sondre Solholm dropped out with a minor injury, allowing captain Stephen O’Donnell to return to the side, with Bevis Mugabi moving to centre back.

The game started at pace, with the visitors pushing high up the park and getting on the ball.

And they should have been ahead in the eighth minute. Watt found himself in behind and one-on-one with goalkeeper McGregor.

Bearing down on goal, he elected to take a touch to the left to get past the ‘keeper but just as he was about to tap into an empty net, the tackle came in to deny him.

Minutes later, the hosts took the lead.

A corner from the right was flicked on at the front post and Sakala, who appeared to be in an offside position, had the simplest task to head home from two yards into the net.

On Rangers’ flag day, a capacity crowd were buoyed and their side started to take control.

Tavernier’s surge down the left saw his shot squirm under Kelly, only for Ojala to arrive on the line and clear.

At the other end, set plays were Motherwell’s best route to goal, but a succession of free-kicks and long throws came to little.

The last flash points of the first half came in the Rangers box

First, Van Veen did brilliantly to get a ball under control in the area and, trying to make room for the shot, slipped.

With no appeal for a penalty and showing frustration at the chance going begging, referee Steven McLean flashed a yellow card for simulation.

Minutes later, a deep ball into the area was hunted down by Watt.

Cutting across Goldson, the defender caught the striker high but the referee waved away the protests for a spot kick.

Rangers started the second half of the front foot. Two minutes in, a ball from the right saw Roofe slide in but steer over from eight yards.

Motherwell’s confidence, however, was also growing and they would be rewarded for a positive approach just after the hour mark.

Building down the left, O’Hara was slipped in to match his run from deep. Surging into the box, he tried to weave his way through but was blocked as he tried to find room for a shot.

The ball, however, broke well to Woolery, who was alive to follow up and power home from 10 yards to give a well-earned equaliser.

Rangers grew in urgency but Motherwell also remained positive and had a huge chance with 10 to go.

Van Veen won a header 25 yards from goal and the ball broke to Slattery, but drive on the half-volley sailed over the bar.

In the end, Motherwell held firm against the late resistance and left with a deserved point.

Forward Abby Callaghan has left Motherwell, with her contract being cancelled by mutual consent.

The 20-year-old joined the women of steel in the summer of 2019 from Stirling University and went on to enjoy two full seasons in the claret and amber.

The club would like to thank Abby for her efforts and wish her well for the future.

Tony Watt is your Paycare Motherwell FC player of the month for August.

The striker netted three goals in the month, as Motherwell picked up 10 points form a possible 15 in the cinch Premiership.

His first came away to St Johnstone in a 1-1 draw, before his equaliser set the team on their way to a comeback 2-1 win at Livingston.

His goal against Dundee at the end of the month was enough to secure a 1-0 win, and a first home league victory of the season.
