Liam Kelly has returned to Motherwell.

The goalkeeper, who spent the second half of the 2020/21 campaign on loan at the club, joins on a permanent basis from Queen’s Park Rangers on a three-year deal.

“It’s brilliant to have Liam back with us and even better that he’s now our player,” manager Graham Alexander said of the signing.

“It’s been a long process but the board have been great with their patience and backing as we worked to get this deal done.

“We all saw Liam’s qualities first-hand last season, and I know how much he enjoyed his time with us previously.

“His ability, professionalism and drive will improve us again. Everyone is delighted to see him back in a Motherwell shirt.”

Voted players’ player of the year for his contribution last season, the Scotland international squad member kept seven clean sheets from 21 appearances.

Starting his career at Rangers, an early loan spell at East Fife then led to time with Livingston, where his form in their first season back in the Premiership earned him international recognition and a move to England.

Kelly will take the number one jersey at the club and will begin training with his teammates again on Tuesday. His move remains pending international clearance.

Goalkeeper Katie Andrews is the next addition to our squad ahead of the new SWPL1 season.

The 16-year-old joins Paul Brownlie’s squad for the forthcoming season, having most recently played for Queen’s Park.

Andrews also played for Central Ladies and trained with the Glasgow City first team at the age of 14.

“I have known Katie for a number of years through the national setup,” head coach Brownlie said.

“I wanted to strengthen the goalkeeping position this season and despite her only being 16, I see her as the potential number one goalkeeper at the club.”

Gill Inglis has agreed a new deal with Motherwell.

The versatile midfielder has extended her stay at the club for a third campaign.

“I can’t speak highly enough of Gill,” head coach Paul Brownlie said.

“From the minute I walked in the door her attitude has been excellent.

“Gill has real leadership qualities both on and off the pitch.”

Often having to cover in multiple positions, Inglis has impressed since she joined the club in 2019.

She demonstrated her experience and leadership in leading the team to a sixth-place position last season as captain of the team.

“I’m delighted to be extending my stay at Motherwell,” said Inglis.

“With Paul coming in, it’s clear he’s keen to drive a positive change in the club and I’m keen to play my part in that.”

Kevin van Veen is a Motherwell player.

The Dutch striker has signed a two-year deal, moving after leaving Scunthorpe United at the end of last season.

“Kevin’s a player I know very well from my time in England and I’m delighted to bring him up to Motherwell,” said manager Graham Alexander of his new recruit, who will wear the number nine jersey.

“He’s made a great impression on the other players while training with us.

“His ability on the ball and to score goals is something that we will all benefit from.

“I know how excited he is about this challenge, and we’re just as happy to have him.

“I am certain he can help achieve success.”

The 30-year-old started his professional career in the Netherlands with Helmond Sport, having spent time as a youth player at PSV Eindhoven, and went on to feature for lower-league sides Dijkse Boys, UDI ’19 and JVC Cuijk.

A move in 2014 to Top OSS, where he netted 16 goals in 21 Eerste Divisie matches, then saw Scunthorpe United take him to England’s League One a year later, where he was managed by the current ‘Well boss.

A short loan spell in the Eredivisie with Cambuur came in between 116 appearances for the Iron, with a move to Northampton Town following in 2017.

Netting 10 goals in 38 matches, he then returned to Scunthorpe in 2019.

Leanne Crichton has signed up for Motherwell for the forthcoming 2021/22 SWPL1 campaign.

The Scotland midfielder has been recruited as both a player and as assistant to new boss Paul Brownlie.

“I’m delighted to have signed with Motherwell,” said Crichton.

“I have worked with Paul previously and this was an opportunity that I couldn’t refuse.

“I believe this is the beginning of something really exciting and hope together we can bring success to this football club.”

Crichton amassed 72 international caps in her career in dark blue, as well as playing at club level for Celtic, Hibernian, Notts County and most notably Glasgow City.

It was with the perennial champions she lifted multiple league titles and featured in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

“I’m thrilled to have Leanne here at Motherwell,” head coach Paul Brownlie said of his signing.

“It’s a massive statement to bring someone with the level of experience Leanne has.

“She is an incredible professional both on and off the pitch, with a real winning mentality.

“Leanne will also join the coaching staff as the assistant manager. I know the standards Leanne sets and that’s why I worked so hard to bring her here to Motherwell.”

New signings Kaiyne Woolery, Justin Amaluzor and Connor Shields take seven, 17 and 29 respectively.

Twelve players have graduated from our youth academy to sign professional terms with the club.

At the back, 17-year-old New Zealand-born goalkeeper Lawton Green is joined by left-back Ewan Wilson and central defenders Sam Campbell, Logan Dunachie and Ali Gould.

In midfield, Adam MacDonald, Kian Speirs and Daniel Hunter all make the step up after rising through from the early age groups.

Forwards Corey O’Donnell and Cody McLeod featured for the first team in the friendly at Dumbarton on Saturday, and turn professional this summer alongside fellow attackers Muhammad Adam and Richard Tambwe.

“We’re delighted for all the boys stepping up and signing professional terms,” Motherwell’s academy director Steven Hammell said.

“We’re excited to see what they have to offer. Every single one of them have plenty of motivation as how their careers can now progress at this club.

“It’s over to them now to continue their development. With the coaching on offer and the people around them who can help them succeed, we’re hopeful they will now show the attitude and application to take their chance.”

The first week back for pre-season is always a challenging one.

The breaks are getting shorter, meaning players come back in a far better physical condition than in years gone by. Nevertheless, the first re-introduction to training is a physically demanding one.

With a Yo-Yo/beep test on day one, and plenty of running in amongst the ball work thereafter, the team are quickly getting up to speed ahead of the first competitive match on 14 July.

“We came back on Monday the 21st,” experienced midfielder Mark O’Hara explains. “It had obviously been four or five weeks off.

“On Monday we came in and we did the Yo-Yo test. Then we trained, after getting the legs back.

“Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday have been very tough football sessions with gym sessions in the morning.”

A pre-season encounter with Dumbarton followed on Saturday past, with a mix of 24 first-team players, youngsters and trialists all getting minutes.

“I think now it’s about getting as many minutes as we can into the legs,” added O’Hara.

“I think that will be six weeks without a game, so we’ll definitely relish that challenge.”

It has been a summer of change at Fir Park, with many players leaving as manager Graham Alexander looks to reshape his squad in his first full transfer window in charge.

Despite first arriving at the club on loan in September 2019, before making his move permanent a year later, O’Hara is now one of the more familiar faces at the club.

“I find myself as one of the longest-serving here,” he added. “It’s obviously a big change, a big turnover this summer.

“But it’s something that everyone is excited about and we’re looking forward to the future.”
