There will be Christmas lights in Motherwell and Wishaw in 2020.

We will make sure that the communities nearest to our home will enjoy a semblance of normality this December, after North Lanarkshire Council had to make the difficult decision to remove festive lighting due to budget constraints.

Motherwell Football Club, together with our partners Phoenix Specialist Solutions, have agreed with the council that we can start putting lights up on the main streets of both towns this weekend and next.

“When we heard that our area would have to go without Christmas lights this year, we wanted to see if we could help,” Motherwell chairman Jim McMahon said.

“North Lanarkshire Council had indicated they would work with community groups to find solutions where possible and, after discussions, we are grateful they have provided us with the lights so we can put them up around the two towns.

“During these challenging and unusual times, we hope that seeing the lights can bring community spirit and a sense of normality to people in our local area.”

David Clark, managing director of Phoenix Specialist Solutions, added: “When Motherwell FC explained the situation to us, we were determined to step in and help.

“Using our expertise in street lighting, we were able to provide a quick solution that makes sure the people of Motherwell and Wishaw can enjoy seeing some of the Christmas lights up.”

We are opening a collection point at Fir Park for the Basics Food Bank in Motherwell.

Our collection point will be in operation at the Davie Cooper Stand on Thursday 10 and Friday 11 December from 2pm to 7pm, and on Saturday 12 December from 9am to 1pm.

Motherwell play their penultimate match before the SWPL1 winter shutdown with a trip to face Rangers.

Kick-off on Sunday 6 December at the Rangers Training Complex is at 3pm.

Tale of the tape

The four meetings between Motherwell and Rangers have been keenly-contested affairs to date.

The first came in the SWPL Cup in 2018, as second-tier Motherwell lost 1-0 away from home.

Since then, a 3-3 home draw in their first league encounter was followed by a 4-3 win for Rangers, and a 3-1 victory for the Light Blues thereafter.

Rangers have won four of their five SWPL1 fixtures this season, finding themselves level on points with Celtic and three points off leaders Glasgow City.

A home victory to Hearts was followed by away wins at Spartans, Hibernian and Forfar Farmington. The one black mark came in a 1-0 home loss to Celtic.

Motherwell have one win from a difficult opening five games, which came in a 3-0 thumping of Hearts away from home.

A chance to make an impact

“Our two games before the break are Rangers away and Celtic at home,” said manager Eddie Wolecki Black.

“Both have made strides to improve in the last year and they are in good form this year. But we are definitely capable of getting something from the match.

“We’ve shown this season we have the ability to trouble any team we come up against. We will head to Glasgow in a positive frame of mind.”

Scottish Premiership action returns to Fir Park on Saturday, with Hibernian coming calling to ML1.

Home form

Motherwell are unbeaten in their last three matches at Fir Park against Hibs.

A 0-0 draw last time out came off the back of a 3-0 win at the start of the 2019/20 campaign, and a 1-0 victory in January 2019.

Prolific on their travels

While Hibs lost their last away game at Aberdeen, before that they were in terrific form on the road.

In all competitions in the 2020/21 season, Jack Ross’ men have won seven out of 10, drawing one and losing two.

Top six ambitions

A win for Stephen Robinson’s side on Saturday can lift them to within two points of fourth-placed Hibernian.

Hibs meanwhile could leapfrog Aberdeen into third with a victory and, depending on results elsewhere, could move to within one point of second-placed Celtic.

PJ Morrison faced arguably the toughest test of his young career at the weekend.

The goalkeeper, performing well for League One leaders Falkirk on loan, found himself pitched against a rampant Rangers team in the Betfred Cup last 16.

In the end, the Glasgow side ran out 4-0 winners but valuable experience was gained against Jermaine Defoe and company.

Elsewhere, Jamie Semple was an unused sub for Cove Rangers in their 1-1 draw at Airdrie, while Sam Muir was also on the bench as Gretna won 1-0 against Berwick Rangers.

Ross MacIver’s Greenock Morton weren’t in action at the weekend, while Harry Robinson remains on the sidelines.

Motherwell lost their first domestic match to a non-Old Firm team since 22 August in Betfred Cup defeat against St Johnstone last weekend.

That record remains intact on league business, with the Steelmen taking 13 points from a possible 15 against St Johnstone, Aberdeen, Livingston and Ross County.

Hibernian progressed in the Betfred Cup with a 1-0 home win over Dundee at the weekend, extending a four-game unbeaten run which included another win over Dundee, as well as home draws against Celtic and St Johnstone.

Jack Ross’ men sit fourth in the table with 26 points from 15 games, 10 points ahead of Motherwell having played two more.
