    Tale of the tape

    Hibernian 0-0 Motherwell

    Hibernian 0-0 Motherwell

A much-improved Motherwell performance saw the Steelmen take a point from in-form Hibernian.

But the visitors arguably should have had all three, after a Jordan White goal at the end of the first half was controversially chalked off for offside.

Manager Stephen Robinson made two changes to the starting team which drew 2-2 with Livingston in midweek.

Callum Lang returned from suspension to take Christopher Long’s position as a wide forward, while there was a debut for Stephen O’Donnell in place of Liam Grimshaw.

With Scott Fox ruled out for the majority of the season with a knee injury, young ‘keeper PJ Morrison came in on the bench.

With the boss looking for a reaction from his players, he got it early on in the capital.

The opener should have come with eight minutes gone. Lang cut in from the left and fired a brilliant curling shot towards the bottom right corner.

Ofir Marciano was unsighted but pulled off a miraculous diving save to tip the ball around the post.

The marauding O’Donnell found himself in the box soon after and could have had a debut goal, only for his shot from six yards to be blocked as he pulled the trigger.

Then with 10 left in the half, Motherwell should have had the lead. Jordan White fired home from 12 yards but, after much deliberation, the goal was chalked offside.

There was dubiety over whether the linesman thought Seedorf had interfered with the goalkeeper, or touched the ball on the way through. In any case, television pictures showed after that neither occurred.

Motherwell again dominated large spells of the second half as they continued to maintain their tempo but struggled to properly trouble Marciano again until the last kick of the ball, when substitute Tony Watt saw his shot from just inside the area easily claimed.

Motherwell: Carson, O’Donnell (Grimshaw), Gallagher, Mugabi, Lamie, O’Hara, Campbell, Turnbull, Seedorf (Hylton), Lang (Watt), White (Long).

Subs: Morrison, Maguire, Polworth, Robinson, Hastie.

    Scott Fox injury update

    Scott Fox injury update

Scott Fox is likely to be out for the remainder of the season with cruciate ligament damage to his knee.

The experienced goalkeeper was a summer recruit to provide competition to Trevor Carson, joining from Partick Thistle.

Following scans, he requires an operation and will spend a significant amount of time on the sidelines.

“The injury is horrendous news for Scott and we are all gutted for him,” said manager Stephen Robinson.

“We will help him in every way we can to get him back fit again.

“Unfortunately it is another freak injury, which we can’t legislate for. Scott is now the fifth player we have out and the fourth who has suffered either a contact or freak injury.

“It is frustrating for us all. But we are focused on Scott and making sure we all support him during his recovery.”

    Tam Forsyth (1949-2020)

    Tam Forsyth (1949-2020)

We are saddened to hear of the death of Tam Forsyth.

The former ‘Well man passed away on Friday at the age of 71.

Tam was brought to the club by Bobby Howitt in 1967 from Stonehouse Violet and at that stage of his career played as a wing-half or inside-forward.

The boyhood Motherwell fan made his debut in October 1967 in a 3-1 win over Stirling Albion and would make 150 league appearances for the club, before joining Rangers in October 1972.

By the time of his transfer to Ibrox, Forsyth had already made his international debut in a European Championship qualifier away to Denmark in 1971 and would go on to amass 22 caps for Scotland.

‘Jaws’, as he would affectionately be known, became recognised as uncompromising defender at Ibrox and, when he bid farewell to Rangers in 1982, he had played more than 200 league games, securing silverware in treble-winning sides.

Latterly the assistant to Tommy McLean at Fir Park, he was the number two during a prolfiic 10-year spell.

With the club winning the First Division title in 1984/85, he would also be in the dugout for the 1991 Scottish Cup success and the Steelmen’s first foray into European competition.

A third-placed finish in 1993/94 in the Premier Division also came during his spell, a year Motherwell came within just four points of winning the league title.

Our thoughts are with his family at this time.

Motherwell have won two and drawn one of their last three at home against Hibernian.

But on the road, it’s a different story, with Jack Ross’ side having won their last four at Easter Road against the Steelmen.

    Form guide

The hosts sit joint top of the table with three wins from three so far in the 2020/21 campaign.

A 2-1 home win over Kilmarnock was followed by a 4-1 victory at Livingston and then a 1-0 success at Dundee United in midweek.

Motherwell picked up their first point of the season against Livingston on Wednesday, being pegged back twice by their visitors.

    Stephen O’Donnell signs for Motherwell

    Stephen O’Donnell signs for Motherwell

    Stephen O’Donnell has joined Motherwell.

The Scotland international full-back was most recently with Kilmarnock, where he played 122 times and was further recognised with 11 national team caps.

The 28-year-old has signed on a short-term deal until the next transfer window

“We’re delighted to add a player of Stephen’s experience,” said manager Stephen Robinson.

“He will give us greater options in both full-back areas, especially at a time where we are lighter on numbers due to injuries.

“He’s an international-level defender who will bring a lot to our squad.”

A youth player with Aberdeen and Celtic, his professional breakthrough came at Partick Thistle, before he moved to Luton Town and then Kilmarnock.

O’Donnell’s contract has the option to extend the deal until the end of the season. He joins subject to Scottish FA clearance.

“I’m delighted to sign a deal with Motherwell,” he said.

“It’s a deal that suits everyone involved. Obviously there’s a few injuries and so the manager was looking for someone.

“When he came to me, I was delighted to sign up.

“I am a local boy, so it’s a great fit for me. And obviously, the chance to have another crack at Europe was a big factor.

“I feel I’ve a lot to prove at that level and to get that chance is important, especially with Scotland games on the horizon too.

“But first, I want to get playing games and help the team.”
