The Scottish FA has suspended the 2019/20 season until further notice, in light of the ongoing developments resulting from the coronavirus outbreak and the risk to public health.

As a result of the suspension, the SPFL has postponed this weekend’s fixtures. Friday night’s home match with Aberdeen will not go ahead, and our SWPL match with Hibernian on Sunday has also been cancelled. All academy games are also off.

The Scottish FA and SPFL will continue to liaise with governments in relation to forthcoming fixtures in the coming days. More information will be communicated at the appropriate time.

We encourage everyone to practice good hand washing hygiene in accordance with government advice.

• wash your hands with soap and water often – do this for at least 20 seconds.
• always wash your hands when you get home or into work.
• use hand sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available.
• cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when you cough or sneeze.
• put used tissues in the bin immediately and wash your hands afterwards.
• try to avoid close contact with people who are unwell.
• do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean.

If you are showing symptoms, follow the advice to self-isolate for seven days. The NHS lists symptoms as a high temperature or a new, continuous cough. Do not go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital, and do not call NHS 111 to inform them you are self-isolating,

Use the NHS 111 online service if you feel you cannot cope with your symptoms at home, your condition gets worse or your symptoms do not get better after seven days. Only call 111 if you cannot get help online.

The story so far

Derek McInnes’ team sit a point behind Motherwell in the Ladbrokes Premiership table with 30 games played.

The Dons have had experienced mixed fortunes during the course of the season but are still in a strong position. They also have a Scottish Cup semi-final against Celtic on the horizon.

Coming up against a Hoops side determined to win their fourth successive treble will represent a massive challenge for the Dons, though there’s a sense that his may be a year in which a first piece of silverware in six years and a first Scottish Cup in 30 years makes its way into the trophy cabinet at Pittodrie.

This season Aberdeen have already come to Fir Park and won convincingly – claiming a 3-0 success back in October, however Motherwell gained a degree of revenge when Liam Donnelly’s header ensured a 1-0 victory for Stephen Robinson’s side at Pittodrie.

Aberdeen have won three, drawn one and lost one of their last five matches in all competitions.

An incredible last-gasp, 4-3 win in the Scottish Cup at Kilmarnock kicked off the latest sequence, with victories also coming in the league against St Mirren and Hibernian. A draw with Kilmarnock and a loss to Ross County have also come in the run.

Lewis Ferguson

Scotland Under 21 international Lewis Ferguson played a crucial part in Aberdeen’s comeback win against Hibs last weekend.

Playing in an advanced midfield role, the former Hamilton youngster has flourished this season – contributing three goals and nine assists in all competitions.

Still only 20, Ferguson has been included in Scot Gemmill’s squad for the upcoming Euro Under-21 Championship qualifiers with Croatia and Greece

Niall McGinn

During his time at Aberdeen, Niall McGinn has shown a real fondness for finding the net against Motherwell.

The Northern Irish international has scored 11 goals since arriving at Pittodrie in 2012 and was on the scoresheet when the Dons eased to a 3-0 win at Fir Park in October.

This season McGinn has been involved in almost 40% of Aberdeen’s Scottish Premiership goals, demonstrating his continued attacking threat with six goals and nine assists.

Curtis Main

After a somewhat slow start to life in the Granite City, Curtis Main has begun to show some of the qualities that endeared him to the ‘Well support in the early stages of his spell with the Steelmen.

The English striker has found the net three times in his last games – including the clinching goal in the 3-1 victory over Hibernian.

During his time at Fir Park, Main scored 14 goals in all competitions with his most notable contribution

We’re delighted to announce David Turnbull has signed a one-year extension to his current contract.

The midfielder, one of the most exciting talents the country has produced in many years, has extended his stay until the summer of 2022.

The new deal comes shortly after he made his long-awaited comeback from knee surgery.

The 20-year-old returned ahead of schedule to get the last 20 minutes against St Mirren in his first match back, before also making an appearance from the bench against Heart of Midlothian at the weekend.

“As soon as I knew I was back, fit and ready to get some game time, I wanted to make sure my contract was sorted,” Turnbull said.

“I have been here a long time. I feel as if I owe the club and the supporters for the way I have been looked after and treated.

“I’ve missed most of this season, so this puts us back to pretty much where we were at this stage last year in terms of my deal, giving the club a little more protection as I was coming into the last year of my contract.

“All my focus now is on spending the next few weeks getting up to full fitness, get back to just playing and enjoying playing football for Motherwell.”

An academy graduate, Turnbull made a blistering start to his ‘Well career, scoring 15 league goals in just 30 appearances, helping him to sweep the board at the club’s own Player of the Year awards as well as net the Scottish Football Writers’ Young Player of the Year gong.

His form brought about attention from both sides of the border with club-record bids received from Celtic and Norwich City.

But he remained a Motherwell player after preventative surgery was required to repair an asymptomatic knee problem.

“The fact David has agreed to extend his deal says everything about him as a person and about his family,” manager Stephen Robinson.

“To have such a talented player available to us again and signing for an extended period is significant for the club.”

2019/20 Motherwell streaming service matches

Trevor Carson and Liam Donnelly are in the Northern Ireland squad for their UEFA Euro 2020 qualifying play-off.

Michael O’Neill’s side travel to face Bosnia on 26 March, with the prospect of a final against either Slovakia or Republic of Ireland five days later.

Barry Maguire has been named in the Scotland Under 21 squad for their forthcoming double header with Croatia and Greece.

The Motherwell youth academy product has been a regular call-up for Scot Gemmill’s side this campaign, as the young Scots push for a place at the 2021 European Under 21 Championships.

Motherwell progressed to the knockout stage of the SWPL Cup after a convincing 6-1 victory over Partick Thistle.

Jordan McLintock netted a hat-trick, with Kaela McDonald-Nguah bagging a double and an own goal rounding off the scoring as Eddie Wolecki Black’s side topped their group with six points.

After picking up three points from Kilmarnock and then being defeated at home by Forfar Farmington, the permutations were simple for the women of steel. Win – and progression would be secured.

They wasted little time in making sure that would be the case in Airdrie, despite the visitors starting the brighter of the two sides and having the first effort of the match, with Craig’s drive testing Ramsey in the horrendous conditions.

The opener came soon after though an own goal. Gallagher’s header skimmed off the surface and into the far corner of her own net.

Motherwell then doubled their lead at the perfect time right before the break, the final action of the half seeing a brilliant team goal.

Sinclair drove through the midfield and played in Puller, who had the vision to pick off McLintock for an open goal to give a two-goal lead at half time.

McDonald-Nguah added to the scoring with a wonderful drive only a minute into the second half. She then added to her tally with another outrageous strike, with the ball floated to the back post, her acrobatic volley flew into the net.

McLintock was next on the scoresheet, spinning the defender and slotting home with conviction to put Motherwell five up.

Her hat-trick was complete when she controlled the ball in a tightly contested box and calmly finished another great move.

Thistle pulled a goal back ten minutes from the end, with ex-Well striker Suzanne Mulvey rewarded for closing down Ramsey’s attempted clearance.

First team coach Stewart Hall was delighted with the performance.

“We had a poor result last week against Forfar, so we asked the girls for a positive reaction,” he said. “With six goals and three points, the girls delivered ten-fold. It was fantastic.

“Kaela has two outstanding finishes, I couldn’t tell you which one was better. It was also great for Jordan McLintock to get a hat-trick.

“We now have a squad of 23 strong, competitive players. Everyone is fighting for a place.

“We will look for a positive performance against Hibernian and it is a match we know we can get a result in.”

The women of steel now look forward to a return to SWPL1 action after an impressive victory, when they take on Hibernian at Ravenscraig on Sunday. Kick-off is 2pm.

Motherwell had to battle hard but eventually came away with a 5-3 win at Greenock Morton in the SPFL Reserve League on Monday.

A topsy-turvy game saw the young Steelmen pegged back twice, before also having to recover from going behind before running out victors.

Mikael Ndjoli scored a double, with further efforts from Harry Robinson, Ross MacIver and an own goal sealing the scoreline.

David Turnbull played an hour as he steps up his return, seeing a penalty saved late in the first half.

It took just over a minute for Motherwell to take the lead. Ndjoli got on the end of MacIver’s cross, bundling the ball over the line from close range.

After Brophy headed in the equaliser in the 10th minute, Motherwell went back in front 12 minutes later. Robinson got the assist, crossing from the right to find MacIver to finish at the back post.

Morton again levelled ten minutes from the break, with Eardley taking in a cross well and hitting the ball into the bottom corner of the net.

A spectacular Easdale strike from 25 yards found the top corner soon after to put the hosts ahead, but the chance to level would fall just before the interval.

Turnbull looked to mark his first start in a match since recovering from a knee operation with a goal, but saw a penalty saved by goalkeeper Wylie.

On the hour mark, Motherwell got level. Ndjoli got his second of the game, heading home from Sam Muir’s cross.

Six minutes later, it was 4-3. Darren Haynes put through his own net, inadvertently turning in Robinson’s cutback.

Motherwell continued to push and with four minutes to go, made it five. Robinson’s left-footed cross sailed all the way through everyone and found the net at the back post.

The battle for third steps up a gear as Motherwell host Aberdeen in the Ladbrokes Premiership on Friday night.

With the Steelmen a point ahead with eight games remaining in the season, the chance is there for the hosts to open a gap in the race for a UEFA Europa League spot.
