Ross MacIver has extended his deal with Motherwell FC until the summer of 2021.

The youngster has been rewarded for breaking into the first team picture at Fir Park, after being recruited from Ross County in the summer.

MacIver announced his arrival onto the scene with a spectacular debut goal on Boxing Day against his former club.

He has since made two further substitute appearances for the club against Hamilton Academical and Aberdeen, before making his first start against Hibernian at the weekend.

“We are delighted to get Ross signed again,” manager Stephen Robinson said. “He is another one of our young players we feel we can keep developing.

“He has already experienced first team football and done well. We are hoping he will keep progressing and developing.”

MacIver added: “It’s been a whirlwind last few weeks, scoring on my debut at Ross County and getting chances in the first team.

“I’ll keep working hard to develop further, and this is the perfect place to do it.”

Motherwell make their second trip to West Lothian of the 2019/20 Ladbrokes Premiership on Saturday to take on Livingston.

Kick-off at the Tony Macaroni Arena is at 3pm.

Tale of the tape

It’s third against fifth in the league on Saturday, with the Steelmen heading east with a 10-point gap over their opponents.

Motherwell go into the match with three wins, one loss and one draw in their last five, with a goalless match with Hibernian on Saturday the most recent result.

Livi have won four of their last five competitive games, with a defeat to Aberdeen being followed by victories over Hibernian, Raith Rovers, St Johnstone and Hamilton Academical.

Head to head

The opening match between the two sides this season ended in a 0-0 draw at Livingston on the opening day of the campaign.

Motherwell were then 2-1 winners at Fir Park in November, with Christopher Long and Allan Campbell netting the goals to seal the victory.

Motherwell progressed in the SPFL Reserve Cup as best runners-up with a comeback 2-1 win over Dundee on Monday.

Goals from Jermaine Hylton and Paul Hale secured the progression of Maurice Ross’ side, having been defeated finalists last term.

Motherwell had the first clear chance to score when Christy Manzinga earned himself a first-half penalty. But stepping up to take, the Frenchman fired his fierce spot kick off the top of the bar and the visitors were able to clear.

Dundee then hit the Steelmen before the break. A ball down the right was crossed in to Cunningham, who went one-on-one with Trevor Carson before slotting in at a narrow angle.

Motherwell had two quick chances to level before the break through Seedorf and Hutchison, but the Dundee goalkeeper stood tall to keep the hosts at bay.

Hylton, making his way back after recently being sidelined through illness, was introduced at the break in favour of Sherwin Seedorf and immediately set about turning the game around.

Having seen an earlier shot after cutting inside turned around the post, he then grabbed the equaliser. Mikael Ndjoli crossed from the right side and found Dean Cornelius. He got to the byline before cutting back across goal for Hylton to steer home.

Then, at the death, he turned provider. Hussain found Hylton on the left who then put the ball over the top for fellow sub Paul Hale, who got between two defenders and found the net to secure a place in the last four.

We asked St Mirren to consider the possibility of opening further sections to away supporters, but were informed that this would not be possible. There will be no additional tickets made available.

Kick-off at Broadwood Stadium is at 2pm.

Maurice Ross’ side can’t progress as group winners but still have a chance of making the semi-finals as the best runners-up of the three pools.

Victory against the Dark Blues will secure progression, with no other group permutations having a bearing if the young Steelmen get the win.

Lauren Doran-Barr and Abby Callaghan have both signed on for another year with Motherwell.

The duo, who featured in the club’s maiden SWPL1 campaign in 2019, are staying with Eddie Wolecki Black’s side.

They join Chelsie Watson, Rachel Connor, Gill Inglis,Kaela McDonald-Nguah, Khym Ramsay, Hollie Thomson, Lauryn Reside, Lori Gardner, Katie Rice, Claire Adams, Jamie-Lee Smith and Niamh Johnston in forming the squad for 2020.

Further signings will be announced over the course of the week.

Meanwhile, Motherwell will face Forfar Farmington, Kilmarnock and Partick Thistle in the group stage of the new SWPL League Cup.

The fixtures will be played on the Sunday 9 February, Sunday 16 February and Sunday 1 March.

Motherwell will face Partick Thistle at home first, before a trip away to Kilmarnock and then a home tie with Forfar Farmington.

The women of steel’s league opener away to Forfar Farmington will be played in between the ties on Sunday, 23 February.

Motherwell put in a performance but lack the killer touch as they draw 0-0 at home with Hibernian.

A lack of cutting edge ultimately cost Motherwell as they were held at home by Hibernian.

Stephen Robinson’s side had a host of chances in both halves but couldn’t make their attacking prowess pay, as they reduced the visitors to limited opportunities.

Motherwell made two changes from the team which won at Aberdeen on Wednesday night. Christopher Long was forced out through injury and replaced by Ross MacIver, with Mark O’Hara dropping to the bench with Christian Ilic coming in.

Almost immediately the chances started to flow. James Scott, causing all sorts of trouble for Tom James down the left, cut inside and flashed a shot wide of goal early on.

Jake Carroll saw a free-kick from close range beaten away by Ofir Marciano, Allan Campbell set a shot wide from inside the area and Liam Polworth sent a shot narrowly over the crossbar from distance as Motherwell peppered the visitors’ goal.

Hibs looked threatening on the counter, but goalkeeper Mark Gillespie was rarely troubled in the first half.

Motherwell set out in similar fashion in the second period but it was Jack Ross’ side who had the biggest chance of the opening stages.

After Gillespie beat away an initial shot, Florian Kamberi found himself in at the back post from a cross from the right. His steer back across goal hit the inside of the right post and bounced back, with Declan Gallagher just on hand to knock the ball behind.

Motherwell changed up the entire frontline across the second half to try and carve out more chances, but found Hibs standing firm.

The biggest chance fell to substitute Christy Manzinga. Getting the ball out of his feet as he flew towards goal, his left-footed shot was netbound all the way but Marciano got the slightest of fingertip touches to turn it onto the crossbar.
