Story of the match

This is the first encounter between the two teams this season.

Last season, all matches were closely fought. With the last three matches between the teams ending in draws.

Thistle drew with Hibernian in their last match, with Motherwell narrowly defeated 1-0 by Hearts.

Motherwell fell to a narrow defeat in the capital on Sunday to Hearts, losing the game 1-0. 

Rebecca McAllister’s first half strike was the difference between to the two sides in a tightly contested SWPL encounter.

It was Motherwell who went close first, Kaela McDonald-Nguah’s free kick went over the bar from 25 yards after seven minutes.

The only goal of the game came after 12 minutes, a mix up in defence meant McAllister picked up the ball before finishing past Mutch to break the deadlock.

Mutch was called into action on 24 minutes when Georgia Timms raced through on goal. Standing firm 1v1, Mutch kept the strikers shot out with a smart save.

Timms caused more problems moments later, when she fired the ball across goal for a tap in before Gill Inglis managed to get back and clear.

After a poor showing in the first half, Motherwell brought on Katie Rice, Kodie Hay and Jemma Hughes in an attempt to change their fortunes.

It would be the latter who had a go on 77 minutes, a cutback fell to Hughes and she fired on target with the keeper spilling the ball but Motherwell had nobody following in.

Motherwell came closest to equalising in the dying moments of the game, after some neat play from back to front, Lauren Doran-Barr drilled a shot goalwards but see her effort come crashing off the inside of the post.

Motherwell are in the capital in their latest SWPL match against Hearts on Sunday 30 October.

Motherwell were in Sky Sports cup quarter final action against Rangers in their last outing.

Despite a strong first half showing, Rangers came away with a 4-0 victory.

Striker Brogan Anderson has the left the club by mutual consent.

Anderson joined the club in the summer and went on to make six appearances for the women of steel.

The club thanks Brogan for her efforts and wishes her well for the future.

Motherwell were simply outclassed, as Rangers netted a clinical first-half strike followed by four in the second half to condemn the women of steel to a disappointing Sky Sports Cup exit at a rainswept Broadwood Stadium.

Emma Watson’s composed finish split the sides at half time, before a double from Kirsty Howat and Lisa Martinez sealed victory for the hosts.

Motherwell tried to force a route back into the game, with chances from Kaela McDonald-Nguah and Gemma Hughes testing Jenna Fife in the Rangers net, but their efforts were left unrewarded as they fell to a disappointing Quarter-Final exit.

Manager Paul Brownlie made two changes from the side that fought to restore a two-goal deficit against Spartans in SWPL1 action last weekend. Kodie Hay and Georgie Rafferty both returned to the starting XI, with Katie Rice and Jo Addie having to settle for a place on the bench.

Motherwell carved out the first opportunity of the game with McDonald-Nguah making her presence known in the early stages. Amy Anderson did well to pickpocket Colette Cavanagh deep into the opponents half before picking out the striker who fired across the face of goal, but the chance came to nothing.

Despite a slow passive start, Rangers’ quality slowly started to edge its way into the game. Chelsea Cornet did well to deceive her marker before drilling a low enticing delivery across the face of goal, but Emily Mutch reacted superbly to parry beyond the reach of Howat who was lurking at the back post.

Motherwell continued to limit the threat Rangers posed throughout much of the first half, but the hosts soon found the breakthrough on the half hour mark. Howat’s audacious strike from the edge of the box rattled off the top of the crossbar before falling kindly to Watson who coolly tucked away the rebound into the empty net.

With the half time whistle looming, Cavanagh was fortunate to have not been given her marching orders after a reckless challenge on Emma Lawton. The winger caught the defender high on her ankle, but the referee only brandished a yellow card.

With Motherwell chasing the game in the second half, Rangers took advantage of the additional space and soon netted a quickfire double.

Samantha Kerr effortlessly worked her way past several lacklustre challenges before clipping a low-cross to Martinez deep into the Motherwell penalty area, and the forward calmly placed her strike high into the roof of the net.

Martinez looked to have netted from a clear offside position, but the linesman remained unconvinced, and the goal stood.

Less than two-minutes later, Rangers had their third of the afternoon. Howat did well to latch onto Cornet’s perfectly weighted through ball before drilling an accurate strike into the top-right corner from an acute angle.

The hosts had four midway through the second half. A clever interchange of play at the edge of the box caught the static Motherwell defence off guard, and Howat was on hand to confidently net her second of the game with another well-taken effort.

The women of steel struggled to recover from this intense period of attacking pressure, and Martinez soon netted her second of the game to complete a tough afternoon for the visitors

Motherwell will now turn their attention to SWPL1 action, as they look to bounce back against a high-flying Hearts side in a crucial encounter next Sunday.

Two perfect penalties from Kaela McDonald-Nguah cancelled out first-half strikes from Rebecca Galbraith and Katherine Smart to complete a thrilling afternoon in East Kilbride.

Paul Brownlie made three changes from the side the cruised past Dundee United in the Sky Sports Cup over a fortnight ago. Lori Gardner and Katie Rice both returned to the starting XI, with Kodie Hay and Brogan Anderson having to settle for a place on the bench. Carla Boyce also returned to action following London Pollard’s midweek departure from the club.

Looking to continue their positive run of form, Motherwell tried to impose themselves from the off, with Lori Gardner testing the Spartans goalkeeper in the opening few minutes.

Latching onto Katie Rice’s through ball, Gardner darted across the face of goal before shifting the ball onto her right foot, but the forwards ambitious effort failed to trouble Alicia Yates.

Emily Mutch was forced into making a superb reaction save moments later. Smart’s floated delivery fell kindly to Tegan Reynolds at the edge of the penalty area, but Mutch reacted brilliant to parry the midfielders effort around the post.

Seconds after keeping her side in the game, it was a moment to forget for the Motherwell shot stopper. Mutch looked to have gathered Galbraith’s deceptive low shot, but the ball somehow slipped through her grasp before nestling into the back of the net.

As the half-time whistle loomed, the visitors netted their second of the game. Marshall’s pinpoint free-kick caught the static Motherwell defence off-guard, and Smart raced through to convert at the front-post.

Trying to find a route back into the game, Motherwell came close to pulling one back on the hour mark. Second half substitute Jemma Hughes pickpocketed Sarah Clelland deep into her own half before driving towards goal, but the striker couldn’t apply the finishing touches as her strike fell agonisingly over the crossbar.

With 20-minutes left to play, the hosts pulled one back. Lucy Ronald was bundled over in the box leaving the referee no alternative, but to award the penalty kick. McDonald-Nguah stepped up and confidently placed her effort past Yates.

Motherwell continued to flood the Spartans penalty area in search of a vital equaliser, and their efforts were rewarded 10 minutes from time. Nicola Jameison was caught wrong side of Lauren Doran-Barr in the box, and the referee soon awarded Motherwell their second spot kick.

McDonald-Nguah stepped up again and coolly sent Yates the wrong way to seal an excellent second half response from the women of steel.

Paul Brownlie’s side will now turn their attention to the Sky Sports Cup, as they face league leaders Rangers in the Quarter-finals on Sunday.

Motherwell return from the international break this weekend when they take on Spartans in SWPL.
