Motherwell play SWPL2 side Boroughmuir Thistle in their third SWPL Cup group match on Wednesday night at Duncansfield Park.

Kick off in Kilsyth is at 7pm.

Entry is £5 for adults. Kids get in for free.

Motherwell are unbeaten in both matches against Boroughmuir Thistle.

The most recent encounter between the two sides came back in 2016.

Motherwell ran out comfortable 6-0 winners in the Championship, after they beat Boroughmuir 4-3 in the fixture earlier in the season.

After their 1-0 defeat on Sunday to Aberdeen, Motherwell go into this match knowing they can’t qualify from the group for the next round of the SWPL Cup.

The women of steel can still finish third however as they look for their first competitive win of the season.

Boroughmuir come into the game off the back of a 3-0 defeat to Queen’s Park on Sunday as they are also looking for their first points of the group stages.

Motherwell lost their second SWPL Cup group match against Aberdeen on Sunday.

Bayley Hutchison’s goal in the 20th minute was enough to secure all three points for the Dons.

Motherwell had the best chance of the opening period. Having won a free kick on the edge of the box, Chelsie Watson stepped up. However her effort went just wide.

Aberdeen then took the lead. Motherwell goalkeeper Khym Ramsay was closed down by Hutchison, who blocked the goalkeeper’s clearance and finished to make it 1-0 to the hosts.

Motherwell looked to bounce back straight away. Kaela McDonald-Nguah picked the ball up on the left wing and cut inside, only for her curling effort to come off the crossbar.

The ’Well continued to pile on the pressure. Claire Crosbie’s header at the back post went across the face of goal and was cleared, just before McDonald-Nguah was set to tap in from close range.

Crosbie caused the Aberdeen defence more problems just before half-time when her header was cleared off the line.

In the second half, Motherwell had most of the possession.

The biggest chance of the second half fell to captain Gill Inglis. Her strike inside the box was set to hit the back of the net but it was blocked by the Aberdeen defence.

Motherwell will look to bounce back on Wednesday night when they host Boroughmuir Thistle in their third group match in the SWPL Cup.

Motherwell travel to face Aberdeen in their second SWPL Cup Group A match this Sunday at Balmoral Park.

Aberdeen were promoted last season from SWPL2 after they won the league.

They lost only one game last season as they finished eight points ahead of Hamilton in second place.

Motherwell and Aberdeen’s last competitive encounter was in the second tier in September 2018.

The ’Well came away with all three points as they returned down the road with a 4-0 victory.

Motherwell opened their SWPL Cup campaign with a 5-0 defeat at the hands of Rangers on Sunday.

Aberdeen have already played two cup matches in Group A.

They beat Boroughmuir Thistle 2-1 in their opening fixture and thumped Queens Park 4-0 on Sunday.

Eva Thomson and Bayley Hutchison both grabbed doubles in the match.

Motherwell put in a fighting display but fell to a 5-0 defeat against Rangers on Sunday.

Doubles from Brogan Hay and Lizzie Arnot, and a further goal from Jane Ross, was enough to secure Rangers all three points in the opening SWPL Cup group stage match.

Motherwell made it difficult for Rangers to create anything in the opening minutes of the game. 

However, their robust defence was eventually broken on 19 minutes by Hay. Khym Ramsay made an excellent save from Jane Ross from close range, but the rebound fell to Hay to tap in to break the deadlock. 

Hay then grabbed her second and Rangers’ second on 23 minutes. Motherwell failed to clear their lines and the striker slotted it in the bottom corner to double her side’s advantage. 

Three minutes later, Rangers were awarded a free kick 25 yards out. Arnot stepped up and despite Ramsay getting a hand to it, the shot had too much power for the goalkeeper and hit the back of the net for goal number three. 

In the second half, Motherwell grabbed a stronger hold in the game and had more possession, limiting Rangers to few chances. 

With 10 minutes to go, Rangers made it four when Ross got on the end of an Arnot cross. 

Arnot would grab her second on the stroke of the final whistle, when she finished after running through on goal. 

With three matches still to go in the group, Motherwell still have it all to play for and travel to Aberdeen next Sunday for their second match.

Motherwell’s first competitive fixture of the 2021/22 season takes place this Sunday against Rangers at Alliance Park.

Last time out, Rangers came away with a 6-0 victory in the penultimate game of the 2020/21 SWPL1 campaign.

Motherwell last took points out of this fixture in April 2019, when they fought back from 3-0 down to take a point.

Motherwell ran out eventual and comfortable 4-0 winners in their third and final friendly match of pre-season against Stirling University.

A double from Leanne Crichton, and further goals from Gill Inglis and Nicole Cairney, wrapped up the win for the claret and amber.

It was an evenly contested first half with neither team really grabbing a hold of the game.

Head coach Paul Brownlie then made seven changes at half-time to rotate his team and in the second half, Motherwell showed their dominance.

Crichton broke the deadlock for the ’Well with a fine effort from a free-kick from 25 yards out.

Motherwell made it 2-0 soon after. Some excellent build-up play down the right-hand side led to Inglis being found in space and she finished past the Stirling keeper to double the advantage.

The win would be all but wrapped up when Crichton scored her second free-kick of the match.

Cairney then got her name on the scoresheet near the end of the match when she finished from close range after Stirling failed to clear a set-piece.

Motherwell’s competitive season gets underway next Sunday when they face Rangers in the SWPL Cup.

Motherwell FC Community Trust’s women’s development team are looking for players who are 18 or older.

This team competes in the SWFL Central/South East league. This will provide a good opportunity to grow your football skillset.

Motherwell made a real statement of intent as they beat Kilmarnock 6-0 in a friendly on Wednesday night.

A double from Kodie Hay, and strikes from Leanne Crichton, Amy Anderson, Claire Adams and Chelsie Watson gave Motherwell their first pre-season victory.

It was a tight affair for the first 10 minutes in the match with Kilmarnock striking the post.

However the breakthrough would come from the claret and amber on 17 minutes.

Lori Gardner showed some excellent work on the left wing before setting up Hay to slot home for her first goal of the evening.

Hay would get her brace just six minutes later. Picking up the ball up from 25 yards out, she blasted a strike past the Kilmarnock keeper for hers and Motherwell’s second goal of the evening.

Assistant manager Crichton would open her account for Motherwell from the penalty spot on 39 minutes.

Captain Gill Inglis ran the length of the park beating a number of defenders before being brought down in the box. Crichton stepped up and slotted home in the bottom right corner.

Motherwell made it four right from the restart, with Gardner again turning provider. She laid off for Anderson, who jinked by one player to smash home for her first goal in the claret and amber.

The dominance continued in the second half.

On 50 minutes, Adams picked up the ball, flicked it up into the air for Crichton to flick back to her, as she hit it sweetly on the volley for number five.

Then, on the hour mark, Watson stood over a free-kick after Adams was caught heavy in the tackle. She went up and over the wall to make it 6-0 and round off a comfortable evening.

Motherwell have signed centre-back Claire Crosbie.

The veteran defender has turned out for Celtic and had multiple spells with Spartans in her career which spans more than 12 years.

“Claire is a vastly experienced centre half who we worked hard behind the scenes to bring to Motherwell,” head coach Paul Brownlie said.

“She has played at the top level and can use that experience to help push us on this season.

“She will bring so much to this team and is another big signing for the club.”

Crosbie made her debut back in 2009 and will be looking to use all her knowledge in the game to push on her teammates this season.

“I’m really excited and looking forward to a new challenge under Paul and Leanne,” the player added.

“It’s a real honour to be part of something special and I can’t wait to use my experience to help us achieve a successful season this year.”
