The women of steel return to South Lanarkshire this weekend encouraged by their emphatic display over newly-promoted Queens Park, as they prepare for the first Lanarkshire derby of the 2024/25 SWPL campaign.

The women of steel cruised to a comfortable six-goal advantage over the Glasgow side, with deadline day addition Laura Berry finding the target four-times alongside a Bailley Collins double to complete a resoundingly positive performance at Ochilview last weekend.

    Motherwell

Motherwell return to competitive action following a convincing victory over the Spiders last weekend, as the women of steel prepare for their first matchday in the Sky Sports Cup in a second-round encounter against local rivals Hamilton in the first Lanarkshire derby since the Accies relegation to SWPL2 last season.

    Queens Park 0-6 Motherwell

The women of steel confidently replicated their emphatic performance from the previous weekend, comfortably placing six past newly-promoted Queens Park in an assured performance at Ochilview on Sunday.

Summer deadline day addition Laura Berry firmly reintroduced herself to the K-Park faithful, netting four-times alongside a Bailley Collins brace to complete a positive afternoon for Paul Brownlie’s side.

Head Coach Paul Brownlie named one change to the starting XI from the side that were narrowly defeated by recently dethroned champions Glasgow City in an impressive display at K-Park last weekend.

Defender Jo Addie returned to the starting line-up, playing at the core of a resolute back four of Chelsie Watson, Jenna Penman, and Katie Rice. Rebecca Cameron remained in the Motherwell goal, as Celtic loanee Amy Sharkey partnered Laura Berry in the final third.

Motherwell started brightly and soon firmly thrusted themselves into the ascendency through a prolific opening phase of play. Striker Laura Berry skilfully worked her way through the Spiders third of the pitch before shifting the ball into the penalty area where the 17-year-old was hauled down, earning a Motherwell spot-kick.

The forward stepped up and confidently forced a low-strike beyond the Queens Park stopper into the bottom-left corner. Moments later, Berry dispatched her second of the game, rattling an impressive strike off the underside of the crossbar following a magnificent solo-run.

A quickfire double from Bailley Collins had the women of steel four-goals ahead shortly before the half-time break after coolly slotting home two precise strikes into the bottom-right and bottom-left corners.

As the second-half resumed, Motherwell firmly picked up where they left off, with Laura Berry completing her hat-trick with a composed curling effort into the bottom-left corner before adding a fourth in the latter stages to complete a comfortable afternoon at Ochilview.

Motherwell will now turn their attention to SWPL Sky Sports Cup action next weekend when they face local rivals Hamilton in the first Lanarkshire derby since Hamilton’s relegation to SWPL2 last season.

    Motherwell 0-1 Glasgow City

The women of steel valiantly fought against title-chasers Glasgow City, but couldn’t capitalise on their attacking dominance, as Glasgow City converted against the run of play to secure the three points under the South Lanarkshire sunshine.

Emily Whelan netted the decisive solitary goal, with experienced shot-stopper Lee Gibson proving to be a vital component, as the 32-year-old stood resolute to deny several goalscoring opportunities from Laura Berry, Bailey Collins, and Amy Sharkey in an afternoon of mixed emotions for Motherwell at K-Park.

Paul Brownlie named five changes to the starting XI from the side that were defeated by Partick Thistle at Fir Park last weekend. Chelsie Watson & Sarah Gibb both returned to the starting line-up, playing ahead of the back three of Gill Inglis, Jenna Penman, and Katie Rice. Rebecca Cameron & Amy Sharkey both made their first competitive starts, with deadline day addition Laura Berry also making an immediate return to the starting XI after completing a season-long loan deal on Friday evening.

Motherwell started brightly and grew in confidence throughout the opening phases of play, with Berry coming closest following the early exchanges. A clever shift of the ball and an unpredictable turn of pace allowed the forward to freely escape her marker before solely bearing down on goal. The striker attempted to curl a weighted effort past Gibson, but the Scotland international stood strong to parry clear.

Motherwell continued to control the early proceedings, limiting and frustrating the visitors into trading possession deep into their own half. However, despite the encouraging start, City netted the opener against the run of play.

Catching Motherwell on the counter-attack, City instantly progressed forward with ease, slicing through the scrambling Motherwell backline before Whelan fired past Cameron in the home goal.

As the second-half resumed, Motherwell firmly picked up where they left off, with Bailey Collins forcing Gibson into making an exceptional close-range save after an intricate piece of build-up play.

Cameron was soon called into action, as Whelan again pressured the Motherwell goal. The forward drilled an effort towards the near post, but young shot-stopper reacted well to parry over the crossbar.

Motherwell penned the struggling City side deep into their own half in the final stages of the game, but ultimately couldn’t find the fundamental equaliser, as City held out for the three points.

The forward joins the women of steel on a season-long loan deal from parent club Rangers.

    Hearts 6-1 Motherwell

The women of steel were hit for six when they faced a high-flying Hearts side in the Scottish capital on Sunday.

Georgie Timms, Joely Andrews, Monica Forsyth, Lisa Robertson and an Emma Brownlie double comfortably surpassed Chelsie Watson’s consolation for the visitors in an afternoon of mixed emotions for Motherwell at the Oriam National Performance Centre.

Paul Brownlie and Leanne Crichton named one change to the starting XI from the side that were defeated by fellow Edinburgh outfit Hibernian last weekend. Chelsie Watson returned to the starting line-up, playing ahead of the back four of Gill Inglis, Jenna Penman, Jo Addie, and Katie Rice.

Motherwell started brightly and grew in confidence throughout the opening phases of play, however a sudden Hearts opener shifted the women of steel’s early momentum. The breakthrough came after only 14-minutes, with an unfortunate slip on the damp turf allowing the hosts to capitalise on an unanticipated counter, with Timms converting Jessica Husband’s whipped delivery across the face of goal.

The second followed shortly before the half-time break, with Andrews finding the target from close-range after a quick counter-attack.

Immediately following the restart, Motherwell narrowed the deficit. Morgan Cross fought through numerous maroon jerseys before being hauled down directly on the edge of the Hearts penalty area. Watson stepped up and coolly curled a magnificent free-kick into the top-left corner.

Almost instantly after pulling themselves back into the contest, Hearts netted two goals in a matter of minutes, with Motherwell continually struggling to defend crosses into the box.

The hosts continued to extend their advantage in the latter stages of the game, with Robertson and Brownlie coasting Hearts to their fourth victory of the 2024/25 SWPL campaign.
