    Friendly victory against Gartcairn

Motherwell finalised their preparations for the new SWPL1 season with a commanding 6-1 victory over Gartcairn on Sunday.

Carla Boyce broke the deadlock in the opening minute before Lauren Doran-Barr netted seconds later.

Kaela McDonald-Nguah prodded home a third on the stroke of half-time to give Motherwell a strong advantage heading into the break. Goals from McDonald-Nguah, Georgie Rafferty and Amy Anderson followed to cement an excellent afternoon for the women of steel.

Motherwell started on the front foot and deservedly found the opener after only 40 seconds. Gill Inglis’ mistimed half-volley sailed invitingly into the path of Boyce who coolly converted at the back post.

Seconds after the restart, Motherwell doubled their advantage. Doran-Barr skipped past her opponent with ease on the right before accurately dispatching her effort into the top-left corner from an acute angle.

It was three on the stroke of half-time. Boyce skilfully cut inside from the left before chipping a delightful through ball to McDonald-Nguah who quietly escaped her marker to tap home from close-range.

Motherwell continued to threaten and almost found a fourth in the opening stages of the second half. Kodie Hay brilliantly worked her way into the box with two clever nutmegs before teeing up Boyce at the edge of the box, but the forwards strike failed to trouble the keeper.

Nevertheless, the women of steel’s attacking prowess shone through as they added a fourth early into the second half. McDonald-Nguah tried her luck from distance, and her deflected effort fell kindly to Inglis at the back post, who slotted the rebound into the bottom corner.

On 67 minutes, it was five. Georgie Rafferty was on hand to calmly divert Katie Rice’s floated corner kick into the bottom-left corner.

With the full-time whistle looming, Gartcairn netted a late consolation. Successfully anticipating the offside trap, Cattrell caught the Motherwell defence by surprise, and the forward’s powerful attempt sailed into the top corner.

    A. Anderson got her name on the scoresheet in the dying stages with an emphatic strike from distance to round off a positive display from Paul Brownlie’s side

    Khym Ramsay departs

Goalkeeper Khym Ramsay has left the club.

The experienced shot-stopper departs Motherwell after making 24 appearances last season.

Since joining the club in early 2020, Ramsay has been a regular between the sticks for the claret and amber.

“Khym leaves with our best wishes,” head coach Paul Brownlie said.

“Due to her life away from football, Khym is unable to commit to training and playing so we mutually made the decision that it would be best for her to take a step back from the team.

“She is an excellent professional and we wish her well for her future endeavours.”

The club would like to thank Khym for efforts in her time at Motherwell and wish her well for the future.

    Defeat to Sunderland in friendly

Motherwell were beaten 3-1 to Sunderland on Sunday at the Academy of Light.

Grace Ede, Abbey Joice and Neve Herron scored for Sunderland while Katie Rice pulled a goal back late in the game.

After creating a couple chances early in the game, Sunderland opened the scoring on 39 minutes. Joice burst down the wing before playing the ball across to Ede who lashed her effort into the top corner.

Sunderland doubled their advantage on 50 minutes. Katy Watson picked up the ball before driving into the box. Lifting her head up, she squared it to Joice who finished cooly into the net.

Herron made it three on 82 minutes but Motherwell continued to fight and got their reward on 85 minutes.

Katie Rice picked the ball up and after shifting it onto her weaker right foot, had a go from 25-yards and placed her effort into the top corner.

In the fourth pre-season game, Paul Brownlie once again used his squad fully to ensure more players got minutes ahead of their SWPL1 campaign.

    Friendly victory against Glasgow Women

    Friendly victory against Glasgow Women

Motherwell showed quality in abundance as they recorded a 7-0 victory against Glasgow Women on Wednesday night.

Summer signing Brogan Anderson netted four goals, with London Pollard, Kodie Hay and Kaela McDonald-Nguah getting on the scoresheet.

Motherwell started on the front foot and got the opener on 17 minutes. Georgie Rafferty sent a long ball towards winger Gill Inglis, who controlled and seen her effort rattle of the post but Pollard was on hand to finish.

It would be 2-0 not long after the 30 minute mark. After a Motherwell attacked seemed to be over, the ball fell to B.Anderson who had a go from 25-yards out and found the back of the net for her first of the night.

Two minutes later, it was three. Hay cut inside from the left wing and laced a strike into the top corner with the keeper having no chance of reaching it.

    Half time, 3-0 Motherwell.

Motherwell looked to continue where they left off and B.Anderson had her second of the game moments into the second period.

Hay again threatening on the left wing had a shot which the Glasgow Women keeper saved but B.Anderson followed in for a comfortable finish.

B.Anderson got her hat-trick on 53 minutes. A defensive mix up from Glasgow Women and the new signing pounced to finish into the net. 5-0.

On 58 minutes, it was six. B.Anderson was on hand once again as she found the back of the net after a goalkeeping error.

McDonald-Nguah got her name on the scoresheet for the second time in three days. Substitute Jemma Hughes retained possession on the edge of the box, laid the ball to the side to McDonald-Nguah who finished emphatically to round off a good nights work for Paul Brownlie’s team.

Motherwell victory over St Johnstone in friendly

Motherwell victory over St Johnstone in friendly

Motherwell continued their preparations for the new SWPL1 season with a comfortable 1-0 victory of St Johnstone on Sunday.

Kaela McDonald-Nguah scored the only goal in the game when she converted from the penalty spot after 53 minutes.

Motherwell controlled the full game and has a cluster of chances over the course of the 90 minutes.

The first big opportunity came from Kodie Hay after seven minutes. The winger beat two St Johnstone defenders and shot over the bar.

Hay was unlucky not to break the deadlock just two minutes later. She fired a low driven shot towards goal which came off in the inside of the post before rolling across the goal line but failed to cross it.

Gill Inglis would go close next when she drove up the wing before pulling a shot narrowly wide on 13 minutes.

McDonald-Nguah found herself with the ball in box on 21 minutes and she lashed a half volley which came crashing off the crossbar with the keeper well beaten.

Arguably Motherwell’s best chance of the first half came on 27 minutes. Inglis once again caused the St Johnstone defence problems on the right hand side, she played a ball across to Hay who seen her shot well saved by the Saints keeper from 10 yards out.

With the deadlock still to be broken, Motherwell continued to pile on the pressure in the second half.

Summer signing Brogan Anderson done well to keep a hold of the ball and she was fouled in the penalty area on 53 minutes, with the referee pointing straight to the spot.

2021/22 top goalscorer McDonald-Nguah stepped up and made no mistake as she fired the ball hard and low to the keepers right to give Motherwell the lead.

Substitute Amy Anderson had a go from 25 yards but her shot was too high and cruised over the bar.

Motherwell would see out the game and come away with 1-0 victory in what was an excellent run out for the squad.

    Motherwell victory in friendly match

Motherwell got their 2022/23 season underway on Sunday when they defeated Dundee United 1-0 in a friendly match at the GA Arena in Dundee.

A first-half goal from London Pollard was enough for the women of steel to get their pre-season preparations off to the perfect start.

Motherwell would see plenty of the ball in the early stages of the game and they would get their reward on the half hour mark.

A nicely worked ball in the midfield eventually found it’s way out to the right hand side where Lauren Doran-Barr controlled, and took to the byline. She crossed the ball across goal where Pollard was waiting to tap into the net.

Chances were limited for the rest of the first half.

In the second period, summer signing Emily Mutch was called into action. She was forced to make an excellent stop on the hour mark to prevent Dundee United from finding an equaliser.

Motherwell would go on to look for a second and double their advantage before the end of the match.

In the latter stages of the match, a Katie Rice corner created havoc in the United penalty area however nobody was their to capitalise and the game would finish 1-0 to the ‘Well.

Motherwell now welcome St Johnstone in their next friendly match on July 10.
