The women of steel will return to league action this evening after embarking on their route to the historic Women’s Scottish Cup at the weekend, with Motherwell comfortably defeating SWPL2 outfit Rossvale at the Kirkintilloch Community Sports Complex on Sunday.

Motherwell, who were the defeated finalists to Hibernian in 2018, placed seven-goals past the hosts in an assured performance that secured their place in the Quarter-Final stage, where they will meet another SWPL2 side in Bonnyrigg Rose after being drawn together on Monday evening.

    The Tale of the Tape

    Motherwell

Paul Brownlie’s side return to league action this weekend, looking to replicate their impressive attacking display against title-chasers Rangers. There were seven different goalscorers on the scoresheet, as Sophie Black netted her second Motherwell goal, with Bailley Collins also netting in the first-half to provide the women of steel with a two-goal cushion at the break.

Louisa Boyes continued her remarkable goalscoring form, converting a third shortly after the restart, with Jenna Penman lashing one into the top-right corner from distance soon after. Second-half substitutes Lucy Barclay, Sienna McGoldrick and Mason Clark all found the target, as Motherwell coasted to a productive seven-goal advantage.

The women of steel will look to continue from where they left off when they face title-chasers Rangers this evening, and will be keen to redeem themselves after a frustrating performance against the Glasgow-side knocked Motherwell out of the Sky Sports Cup last month. Motherwell will be without striker Laura Berry, midfielders Mason Clark and Sophie Black, who are all ineligible to face their parent club.

    Rangers

Like Motherwell, Rangers also secured their place in the Quarter-Final of the Scottish Cup, dispatching 24-goals past lower-league side West Dyke FC in a clinical display. They travel to K-Park this evening, seeking their sixth successive competitive victory after hitting Dundee United for six in their last league meeting in November.

The women of steel coasted to the next round of the Scottish Cup, dispatching seven-goals past SWPL2 outfit Rossvale, in an assured performance at the Kirkintilloch Community Sports Complex on Sunday.

Motherwell’s attacking prowess shone through, as seven different goalscorers earned their place on the scoresheet, with Rangers loanee Sophie Black curling home a magnificent opener, before Bailley Collins equally matched her teammates strike through an unstoppable half-volley.

Louisa Boyes continued her exceptional goalscoring run, placing a third from the edge of the box to extend the visitors advantage in the second-half, with defender Jenna Penman rifling home an incredible fourth to firmly place the women of steel into the ascendency.

Substitute Lucy Barclay skilfully evaded her marker to convert from close-range for Motherwell’s fifth, with fellow second-half addition Sienna McGoldrick bulleting a strike from distance into the top-right corner for the sixth of the afternoon.

McGoldrick soon turned provider, teeing up Scotland international teammate Mason Clark, who rounded off a successful afternoon by finding the target.

Motherwell will await their opponents in the next round of the Scottish Cup on Monday evening, with the draw set to commence at 7PM. The women of steel will be back in action on Wednesday evening, when they face title-chasers Rangers at K-Park.

The women of steel will embark on their route to the historic Women’s Scottish Cup this weekend, as SWPL2 outfit Rossvale welcome the visitors to the Kirkintilloch Community Sports Complex on Sunday.

Motherwell, who were the defeated finalists to Hibernian in 2018, will participate in the 54th inauguration of the competition after reaching the Semi-Final in 2023 – contesting the first domestic women’s match to be played at the National stadium, Hampden Park.

    The Tale of the Tape

    Motherwell

Motherwell return to domestic action this weekend after a fortnight break to the footballing calendar, as the international break comes to a close. Striker Laura Berry and midfielder Mason Clark both played their part, as Scotland confirmed their place in the second round of qualification matches for the UEFA under-19 European Championships. Berry started on three occasions, netting five goals, with Clark also starting twice.

The women of steel will look to continue from where they left off, after finding the target on six-occasions in their last encounter against Queens park, replicating their previous six-nil victory over Aberdeen at Balmoral Stadium less than a fortnight prior.

Midfielder Louisa Boyes scored two hat-tricks in November, placing three past Aberdeen and Queens Park in a prolific spell for the 23-year-old. Berry returns in claret and amber for her first matchday since picking up the SWF young player of the year award on Saturday evening.

    Rossvale

Opponents Rossvale have endured an inconsistent run of form, picking up one-win from their last five games, defeating promotion-chasers Livingston by five-goals to two whilst encountering defeats to Gartcairn, Boroughmuir Thistle, Kilmarnock and a stalemate with St. Johnstone.

Laura Berry awarded Scottish Women’s Football Young Player of the Year

Laura Berry awarded Scottish Women’s Football Young Player of the Year

Striker Laura Berry is the SWF SportScotland Young Player of the Year.

The 17-year-old forward was nominated alongside Rossvale’s Sophie Ambrosini, Hearts’ Jessica Husband and Ross County’s Keira Syrjanen. After being initially shortlisted by a supporters vote, Berry was awarded the ‘Young player of the year’ by a selected judging panel.

The striker burst onto the Scottish footballing scene, netting 8-goals in 12-appearances after joining the club on an initial season-long loan deal from Glasgow-outfit Rangers.

“I’m absolutely delighted to receive this award,” Berry emphasised.

“It’s an absolute honour and a privilege to be nominated alongside so many talented players, and I’m very proud to have been awarded the ‘Young Player of the Year.’

“I just want to continue the form that I showed last season in this campaign, and really support Motherwell to a positive position in the SWPL.

Berry has quickly rediscovered her form this campaign after re-joining the club on a second-consecutive loan deal, scoring seven-goals in six-appearances, including four against newly-promoted SWPL2 champions Queens Park in only her second game.

“I’m really proud of Laura,” Head Coach Paul Brownlie added.

“Laura works tirelessly both on and off the pitch to improve her game, and to be recognised alongside so many talented players is great to see.

“We’ve worked hard at the club to have a proven track record of developing young players, and to have Laura awarded the SWF Young Player of the Year, is an absolute privilege for the club and a reward for all the talented coaching staff who work behind the scenes.”

Paul Brownlie’s assessment of Queens Park victory

Paul Brownlie’s assessment of Queens Park victory

Paul Brownlie’s side comfortably swept aside visitors Queens Park in a convincing display at K-Park on Sunday evening.

The women of steel extended their advantage over closest-rivals Partick Thistle into the final top-six place in the ScottishPower Women’s Premier League table after racking up six goals, including a hat-trick from midfielder Louisa Boyes to complete a commanding performance in East Kilbride.

“It was a strong performance,” Head Coach Paul Brownlie said.

“First-half especially, we were really dominant in the game. It was the best I’ve seen us in spells in terms of how we moved the ball with a real tempo.

“The variation in goals was really good. It goes back to the players, in terms of them taking on information. We did a lot of analysis after the game against Thistle, we knew there were areas that we needed to get better, and the goals today is testament to them.”

Louisa Boyes completed her second hat-trick of November, finding the target across both halves after netting three-times against Aberdeen at Balmoral Stadium over a fortnight ago.

“[Louisa] shows incredible energy in the game,” Brownlie added.

“It’s the speed in the transition at points is something we’ve worked really hard on, and Louisa is really important in that.

“I think you could see that with some of her runs to attack the box. She has came a long way in a really short period of time.”

The women of steel face a short break before their next competitive game, as Laura Berry and Mason Clark both travel with the Scotland Under-19 squad.

“Two of the girls are away with the Scotland 19s,” Brownlie said.

“It will givee the opportunity for the rest of the players to get a break, where they’ll work on their individual programmes. We understand we’ll have a difficult run of games, with Rossvale in the cup and Rangers in the league, but we’ll take it one game at a time.”

    Motherwell 6-1 Queens Park

    Motherwell 6-1 Queens Park

Motherwell cruised to a momentous action-packed victory under the lights, as the women of steel dismantled a dejected Queens Park side to secure three points at K-Park on Sunday.

Louisa Boyes netted a sensational hat-trick to mark her second of November, with midfielder Mason Clark also converting her first Motherwell goal. Bailley Collins returned to the scoresheet, as second-half substitute Sarah Gibb rounded off a clinical display with a close-range finish within the final stages of the game.

Head Coach Paul Brownlie named two changes to the starting XI that were held by closet-rivals Partick thistle last weekend. Skipper Gill Inglis took a place on the bench, as defender Jo Addie returned to the Motherwell backline. Mason Clark also returned to the matchday line-up, replacing Rachel Todd in midfield. A unforeseen injury in the warm-up forced Brownlie into reversing his first team sheet change, with Addie having to drop out of the matchday squad, with Inglis returning to the starting XI.

Poised to capitalise on their recently squandered attacking opportunities, the women of steel started firmly on the front foot, and quickly found themselves on the scoresheet. A clever interchange of play  enabled Boyes to skilfully evade her marker, before locating space at the edge of the Spiders penalty area, and the midfielder comfortably slotted a composed side-footed finish into the bottom-left corner.

Motherwell relentless high-press continued to frustrate the visiting backline, with the women of steel doubling their advantage moments later. A disorganised defensive clearance fell fortuitously to the feet of Mason Clark, who composed herself with a left-footed first-touch before dispatching an unpredictable right-footed half-volley into the top-right corner after first colliding with the far-post.

The Queens Park defence relented, gifting Motherwell possession deep into their final third, with Collins capitalising and soon coasting Motherwell into a commanding three-goal first-half advantage. A expertly manoeuvred set-piece routine mirrored the midweek efforts on the training-ground , as Gill Inglis picked put Collins in acres of space around 30-yards from goal, and Collins’ direction-shifting strike wrong-footed the Spider shot-stopper before nesting comfortably into the back of the visiting net.

Confidently retaining a three-goal cushion as the second-half resumed, Brownlie’s side calmly picked up from where they left off, picking up their fourth of the afternoon. Boyes skilfully worked her way through the Queens Park backline before finding herself directly through on goal, with the midfielder cushioning a curling right-footed attempt into the top-right corner.

Emma Craig pulled one back for the visitors against the run of play, drilling an exceptional strike from distance into the top-right corner of the Motherwell net.

The women of steel responded less than 10-minutes later, with Boyes completing her second hat-trick in November, finding the target from a few yards out.

Motherwell sealed the three points with almost the final kick off the ball, with Gibb back on the scoresheet, with an unmissable finish from close-range. the women of steel move three points clear of Partick Thistle in the final top-six place.

    Next up: Queens Park

The women of steel set their sights on K-Park this weekend, motivated by their revitalised performance over closest-league rivals Partick Thistle, as they prepare to face last seasons SWPL2 champions Queens Park in South Lanarkshire on Sunday.

Motherwell came agonisingly close to achieving a vital three points against fellow top-six chasers Partick Thistle, with a fortuitous own-goal from Clare Docherty rewarding a dominant first-half display in Springburn. Former striker Tiree Burchill levelled the contest minutes into the second-half, but despite an array of goalscoring opportunities in the second-half, Motherwell couldn’t capitalise and seal the three points at Petershill Park.

Sunday’s hosts remain one point clear of the Jags following last weekend’s result, with the women of steel set to face a difficult fixture list to conclude the final matchdays of 2024. Paul Brownlie’s side will take on the Spiders in East Kilbride before facing title-chasers Rangers, Hibernian, and Hearts in the final fixtures in 2024.

    The Tale of the Tape

    Motherwell

The women of steel optimistically turn their head to the weekend’s action, enthused by their impressive display against Partick Thistle. Motherwell controlled much of the attacking opportunities, but struggled to capitalise on their momentum in the game.

Motherwell have went unbeaten in five of their last eight games, only defeated twice by Rangers and once by defending champions Celtic. The Lanarkshire side will seek to replicate their clinical display over the Glasgow-outfit in September. Striker Laura Berry netted four-goals in her first start since returning on-loan from Rangers, with a Bailley Collins double complimenting a six-goal victory at Ochilview.

    Queens Park

The Spiders have had a difficult run of form since enduring a heavy defeat in the previous meeting with the women of steel. Queens Park have picked up one point in their last five league matches, holding Edinburgh-side Spartans to a 1-1 stalemate, whilst encountering defeats to Aberdeen, Partick thistle, Celtic and Glasgow City alongside a Sky Sports Cup Quarter-Final exit to Hibernian.

    Partick Thistle 1-1 Motherwell

    Partick Thistle 1-1 Motherwell

It transpired to be a frustrating afternoon for the women of steel, as a dominant display could ultimately only merit a point, as the visitors braced the frosty conditions at Petershill Park on Sunday.

Laura Berry rewarded the women of steel’s attacking first-half threat, claiming the opener to propel the visitors firmly into the ascendency at the half-time break.

As play resumed, Motherwell were the architects of their own downfall, gifting possession cheaply to former striker Tiree Burchill, who drilled home an unstoppable strike into the top-left corner.

The women of steel rallied in the second-half, forcing the fatigued Thistle backline into trading possession deep into their own territory, but despite creating countless opportunities; the decisive winner evaded Paul Brownlie’s side.

Head Coach Paul Brownlie named five changes from the side that were knocked out of the Sky Sports League Cup Quarter-Final to defending champions Rangers over a week ago. Emily Mutch returned to claim her place in the Motherwell goal, with captain Gill Inglis, Sophie Black, Rachel Todd and Laura Berry all featuring in the starting XI.

Motherwell had the ball in the back of the net within the opening minutes of the game, as Rice’s whipped delivery across the face of goal was diverted back into the six-yard-box off the chest of Collins, and a defensive mix-up saw Clare Docherty head the ball into her own goal. However, the referee had adjudged Collins knee to have been her hand, and disallowed the goal for handball, much to the bemusement of the Motherwell players.

Berry continued to cause the hosts problems, skilfully working her way past numerous red and yellow jerseys before shifting the ball through the legs of Demi Falconer and delivering a low-delivery towards her fellow Rangers loanee Sophie Black, but despite a goalmouth scramble; Motherwell couldn’t convert.

Berry continued to be the provider, carrying the ball from midfield into the Thistle final third before teeing up the overlapping Bailley Collins, but the defenders low-effort failed to trouble the Jags stopper.

Motherwell’s dominance was soon rewarded, as the visitors finally broke through the resolute Thistle backline. Rice’s floated free-kick from the right-flank sailed invitingly into the Thistle penalty area, and Berry contested Demi Falconer for the ball, with the decisive touch coming off one of the challenging players before nestling comfortably into the back of the net.

As the second-half resumed, Motherwell gifted the hosts a lifeline, with former striker Tiree Burchill netting the equaliser. Motherwell were caught in possession, with a shortage of players at the back, and Burchill calmly raced through before drilling an unstoppable right-footed finish into the top-left corner.

Amy Sharkey came close to restoring the women of steel’s advantage after latching onto Sarah Gibb’s through ball, but the striker couldn’t find a clean connection on the ball, as the forwards strike fell well wide of the target.

Louisa Boyes almost secured the three points in the final stages of the game, curling a hopeful strike from the edge pf the penalty area, but it resulted in a comfortable save for the Thistle goalkeeper.

Paul Brownlie: “Our preparations remain the same. It’s important to focus on ourselves and not the occasion.”

Paul Brownlie: “Our preparations remain the same. It’s important to focus on ourselves and not the occasion.”

The task has been set for the women of steel this weekend, with victory over Partick Thistle extending Motherwell’s foothold in the final top-six place in the Scottish Women’s Premier League table, but Head Coach Paul Brownlie assured that preparations have not been altered ahead of the highly-anticipated encounter at Petershill Park on Sunday.

Paul Brownlie’s side remain one-point clear of Brian Graham’s Jags in the final top-six place, despite enduring the first defeat between the sides, when the visitors cruised to a frustrating four-nil advantage at Fir Park last September. Despite the anticipation of facing a close-rival, the women of steel’s preparations haven’t altered.

“We all understand how important this game can look from the outside,” Brownlie explained.

“Our preparations remain the same. It’s important to focus on ourselves and not the occasion. We are determined to achieve a positive result, especially after the defeat at Fir park earlier in the year, but the squad aren’t adding unnecessary pressure onto themselves. We will approach the game in the same manner as we try to for every game.

“Thistle have proved their capability as a top-six side and we have to respect that, but I believe in the ability and the desire within the squad to achieve that for ourselves.”

The women of steel’s long-awaited return to Fir Park failed to live up to expectations, as Partick Thistle comfortably swept the hosts aside before cruising to a commanding four-nil victory in the first meeting between the sides this season. Motherwell have since regrouped and regained their early signs of momentum, coasting past Aberdeen with a magnificent six-goal victory under the floodlights at Balmoral Stadium in a performance which propelled the women of steel firmly back into the final top-six place, one-point ahead of Thistle.
Louisa Boyes’ netted a sensational second-half hat-trick, with Laura Berry also dispatching a strike from the penalty spot. Sienna McGoldrick and Sophie Black both got off the mark in claret and amber, netting their first goals for the club.

“We’ve been really positive on the road this season,” Brownlie added.

“Earning three-points against Aberdeen and Queens Park, whilst scoring 12-times demonstrates the clinical performances that the squad have been capable of showing.

“We picked up only seven-points from our opening 11-away games last season, and we quickly looked to address that record. We’ve already achieved more points on the road in this campaign in five fewer games, scoring an additional 12-times and conceding 18-less goals.

“We’re always looking to progress, and having come close to defeating Thistle on a few occasions in the past, we are looking to get over that hurdle, but the players are not getting caught up in the occasion and are relishing the opportunity to get back onto the pitch, regardless of the opponent.”

In the past week, the women of steel have been flying the flag for the Scotland National team, with Sophie Black, Amy Sharkey and Sienna mcGoldrick all representing the Scotland under-17 squad, with Sharkey netting against the Netherlands yesterday. Striker Laura Berry and fellow Rangers-loanee Mason Clark have both been selected to represent the Scotland under-19 squad in their latest set of Euro 2025 qualifiers.

“It’s always great to see our players on the international stage,” Brownlie emphasised.

“It’s always a rewarding feeling for myself and all of the coaching staff to see the players club performances being rewarded, whether that be through squad selection or featuring within the matchday line-up.

“We hope the players are able to take those excellent experiences within the international ranks back into club football, and are able to really drive us forward throughout our next set of fixtures.”
