    Victory over Hearts in SWPL1

Motherwell cruised to a comfortable 2-0 victory over Hearts at Alliance Park on Sunday.

Leanne Crichton’s opener from the penalty spot and Kaela McDonald-Nguah’s second-half header sealed all three points for ‘the Well.

Motherwell applied the early pressure and were unfortunate not to open the scoring in the early stages.

Gill Inglis skilfully danced her way past several Hearts challenges before unleashing her long-range effort on goal, but Hearts goalkeeper Parker-Smith responded quickly to produce a smart save.

Minutes later, Crichton would come close to the opener following some excellent link-up play.

Lori Gardner’s clever backheel left Crichton free to release her strike at the edge of the box, but the experienced midfielder’s curling effort was superbly tipped over the bar by the keeper.

The visitors would come close to breaking the deadlock on the stroke of half-time. Maria Mcaneny’s in-swinging cross was knocked on by Amelia Birse, but Khym Ramsay reacted quickly to parry away the close-range attempt.

Hearts would again come close in the opening stages of the second half. An exceptional piece of skill from Mcaneny left her free on the left, before cutting inside and placing her effort into the top corner, but Ramsay again reacted quickly to make a comfortable save.

The women of steel would then take the lead from the penalty spot on the hour mark after Crichton was caught with a high challenge in the box. The midfielder stepped up and coolly slotted her strike into the bottom-right corner.

Motherwell would add a second in the latter stages of the game. Crichton’s floated corner was superbly met by McDonald-Nguah, who powered her headed effort past the keeper into the top-right corner.

The win pushes Motherwell up into sixth in the league table, five points shy of fourth-placed Hibernian.

The team will be full of confidence as they travel to face Rangers next week, with three clean sheets and three games unbeaten on the bounce.

    Tale of the tape

Motherwell are unbeaten in their last six games against the Jambos, winning five and drawing one, with Hearts last beating Motherwell in October 2017.

Motherwell came away with all three points in each of the fixtures against Hearts last season.

Last time out, Motherwell won 1-0 in the capital thanks to a Jade Gallon penalty.

    Form guide

Motherwell come into this game off the back of keeping two clean sheets in their last two fixtures.

A 0-0 against Spartans in Edinburgh in their last game, despite going down to 10 players and a comfortable 3-0 victory in the Lanarkshire derby the week prior will give the women of steel ample confidence going into the game against Hearts.

Hearts were beaten 2-0 against champions Glasgow City in their last fixture, but picked up their first points of the league season against Aberdeen the week prior, staging a comeback from 2-0 down to win 3-2.

    Draw at Spartans in SWPL1

    Draw at Spartans in SWPL1

Motherwell battled hard to earn a well-deserved point against Spartans at Ainslie Park on Sunday.

Both sides would be provided with several opportunities throughout. However, neither side could apply the finishing touch.

Gill Inglis would be denied the opener early on, before Rosie McQuillan passed up a gilt-edged opportunity for the hosts early into the first half.

The women of steel move up into eighth in the SWPL1 table and will be full of confidence as they host Hearts at Alliance Park next week.

Motherwell applied the early pressure and were unfortunate not to open the scoring in the early stages.

Amy Anderson’s perfectly-timed through ball was superbly controlled by Inglis, who cut inside and fired towards goal. But the forward’s curling effort was brilliantly parried away by the goalkeeper.

Spartans would have the best chance of the game minutes later. Simone McMahon’s long ball sliced through the Motherwell defence, leaving McQuillan through on goal.

The forward skilfully rounded Khym Ramsay but couldn’t apply the finishing touch as she fired wide of the empty net.

Motherwell would come agonisingly close to the opener on the half hour mark.

Leanne Crichton’s floated cross was superbly flicked on by Lori Gardner from close range, but Spartans goalkeeper Rachel Harrison reacted quickly to make a smart save.

Motherwell would be reduced to 10 as Paige McAllister was given her marching orders midway through the second half.

McAllister appeared to have timed her tackle perfectly, but the referee made no hesitations and quickly brandished the red card.

Motherwell came close to the winner late on. Crichton’s whipped in free kick was brilliantly met by Claire Crosbie at the back post, but the defender’s powerful headed effort fell wide of the Spartans goal.

This result will be a real confidence boost for Motherwell as they continue to build on last week’s derby day result over Hamilton.

Paul Brownlie’s side may feel slightly aggrieved to have not found the winner as they controlled large parts of the game.

    Derby day delight in SWPL1

Motherwell cruised to their first league win of the season after defeating rivals Hamilton 3-0 at Alliance Park in the first Lanarkshire derby.

Leanne Crichton would open the scoring from the penalty spot before Lori Gardner added a spectacular second on the stroke of half-time.

Academy graduate Jemma Hughes would fire home the third in the second half to secure the women of steel’s first three points of the season.

Motherwell applied the early pressure and were unfortunate not to open the scoring in the early stages.

Kodie Hay’s cross from the right was superbly flicked on by Claire Crosbie, but Hamilton would clear their lines after a goal-line scramble.

Minutes later, Crichton’s in-swinging cross was met by Hughes at the back post, but the striker’s powerful header sailed narrowly above the crossbar.

Motherwell would be awarded a penalty midway through the first half after Crichton’s powerful effort struck the hand of a Hamilton defender.

Crichton stepped up and confidently placed her strike past Sarah Rhind to open the scoring for the hosts.

Motherwell came close to doubling their advantage minutes later. Amy Anderson’s pass was brilliantly controlled by Hay, who turned and rifled a long-range volley towards goal, but her dipping effort was superbly parried away by the keeper.

The women of steel would add a second in the latter stages of the first half.

Gardner found space on the right, and skilfully passed her opponent with a clever nutmeg before firing her strike into the top corner to give her side a comfortable advantage heading into half-time.

The Well would add a third on the hour mark. Gardner’s perfectly weighted through-ball found Hughes unmarked at the edge of the box, and the forward skilfully beat her opponent before calmly firing her strike into the top left corner.

The result will be a confidence boost for Motherwell who move off the foot of the table, before they travel to face Spartans next week.

Prior to that, they were beaten by Aberdeen 1-0 in the clash of the promoted sides.

Positives to take in SWPL1 defeat

Motherwell will be encouraged with their performance despite suffering a 4-0 defeat to Celtic at the Penny Cars Stadium on Wednesday.

Charlie Welling would fire the hosts in front from close range early on, before adding her second of the game on the stroke of half-time.

An unfortunate Jo Addie own goal would give Celtic a third, before a late Clarissa Larisey strike sealed victory for the visitors.

Motherwell applied the early pressure and were unfortunate not to open the scoring in the early stages.

Leanne Crichton’s perfectly-weighted through-ball found Gemma Hughes unmarked at the edge of the box, and the forward skilfully beat her opponent before firing her strike towards goal, but her effort was easily gathered by the keeper.

Minutes later, Gill Inglis’ clever interception deep into the Celtic half released Lori Gardner, who burst with pace before placing her strike past Chloe Logan. However, the winger’s effort landed agonisingly wide of the Celtic post.

Despite Motherwell’s early chances, it would be the visitors who would find the opener after 15 minutes.

Chloe Warrington’s in-swinging cross found Welling unmarked in the box, and the forward calmly placed her strike past Khym Ramsay from close range.

Celtic would double their advantage on the stroke of half-time. Shen Mengyu’s low-driven cross again found Welling unmarked in the box, and the striker coolly slotted her strike past Ramsay into the bottom left corner.

The league leaders would add a third in the latter stages of the game. Rachael Donaldson was left in acres of space on the right, and the midfielder’s powerful low cross was inadvertently deflected past Ramsay by teammate Addie’s tackle into the bottom left corner.

With 10 minutes left to play, Celtic would seal all three points by adding a fourth. Donaldson’s whipped in free-kick was parried away by Ramsay, but only as far as Larisey who comfortably followed up from a yard out.

Motherwell will be encouraged with their display and will have positives to take before they host Lanarkshire rivals Hamilton in the first-ever women’s Lanarkshire derby later next month.
