    TV: Murphy delighted with double

Jamie Murphy was relieved to finally put his Fir Park goal drought behind him with a double in Motherwell’s 4-0 win today.

The talented striker has eight goals to his name so far this term, but hasn’t scored at home since his winner against Hearts some five months ago.

He put that right with a thirty-yard thunderbolt midway through the first-half then a poacher’s finish twenty minutes from time.

And the former Scotland U21 striker was thrilled with his goals and Motherwell’s progression to the next round.

He said: “To score two against any team is great but it was particularly pleasing to get amongst the goals here at Fir Park.

“Queen’s Park put pressure on us, particularly early in the second half, but at this stage of the competition it’s all about getting through and thankfully we managed that today.”

TV: McCall pleased to be through

Stuart McCall was pleased to progress to the Fifth Round of the Scottish Cup but felt his side could have been better against a plucky Queen’s Park side this afternoon.

The Fir Parkers scored four without reply, a result which probably flattered the Steelmen with the Spiders proving tough and determined opposition throughout.

Although delighted to be in the hat for Monday’s draw, the former Scotland International midfielder wants to see more from his players in the coming weeks.

“Not our best performance by any matter of means but credit has got to go to Queen’s Park,” he said.

“I thought they were excellent from start to finish; they go two goals down early but they kept at and we probably took our foot off the gas a little which we didn’t want to do.

“Positives are Murph (Jamie Murphy) getting on the scoresheet with two good goals. Obviously Henrik (Ojamaa) coming on and scoring and the other forward, Omar Daley, getting amongst the goals. Generally, we did okay in patches but weren’t at our best but the bottom round is we are through and in the draw this Monday.”

    Motherwell 4 Queen’s Park 0

    [tab:Match report]

twitter Kris Jack at Fir Park

Motherwell put four goals past an impressive Queen’s Park side to progress to the next round of the William Hill Scottish Cup.

A fine individual effort from Omar Daley and a debut strike from Henrik Ojaama, either side of a Jamie Murphy brace, put the Steelemen another step closer to a return to Hampden.

Despite losing four goals, The Spiders gave a good account of themselves and on another day could have run Motherwell much closer.

A band of over 600 Queen’s Park fans travelled to Fir Park in search of a giant killing, but despite some great spells of possession and numerous half chances, they could not find a way to break down their hosts. Instead, Motherwell looked more predatory than they have all season at home, and took their four goals well.

McCall’s men could have been ahead as early as the first minute when Omar Daley managed to find some room in the box, but Queen’s goalkeeper Neil Parry made a great block with his legs. Parry was to have a fairly busy afternoon and would pick the ball out of his net in Motherwell’s next attack.

A Queen’s attack broke down at halfway and a lovely channelled ball from Nicky Law set Jamaican International Daley off down the right flank. He rode a challenge from Sean Burns before bustling between Jamie Brough and Ricky Little to fire in off the post from 8 yards. It was a great start to the game for the home side, but didn’t deter Gardner Speirs’ men from putting up a fight.

Brian McBride had a number of chances form distance in the first half that had Motherwell hearts in mouths. His first, an effort which only just cleared Darren Randolph’s cross bar form around 30 yards, was close before he arrowed another from a similar distance right down Randolph’s throat.

The game began to run end to end, as both sides looked to score. Jamie Murphy flashed a ball across the six-yard line which was deflected out for a corner by Little, before Daley was allowed to turn and shoot in the box after good work with Tim Clancy, but his effort deflected in to the arms of Parry.

Down the Cooper End, Meggat headed just over from an Anderson free kick, before Craig Smith spurned the best chance of the first half when he dragged his shot wide when given acres of room in the box.

Where Queen’s Park’s inaccuracy let them down, Motherwell’s eye for goal saw them prosper, as they took a two goal lead on twenty minutes. Jamie Murphy picked the ball up in the centre circle and strode forward. Where usually he would drop a shoulder and continue his run, he looked up and rattled a rip-snorter past the diving Parry from around 30 yards.

It was perhaps a tad harsh on the Hampden side who still looked ready to battle, but they should have been 3-0 down moments later when Bob McHugh created a chance for himself. The diminutive forward wriggled his way in to the box and took a touch too much as his delayed shot was saved by the onrushing Parry.

If that was a let off for Queen’s, Ian Watt and David Murray provided the same for the ‘Well.

Winger Watt went on an unchallenged run in to the box, only to blast wide when an effort on target seemed more likely. Murray then got on the end of a deep cross which both Clancy and Randolph dithered at, but his effort rolled along the six-yard line with no takers.

Motherwell were just about good for their lead at the break, but found themselves under the cosh for the first twenty minutes of the second period. McBride, Longworth and Watt all had chances to bring Queen’s back in to the game. Jamie Longworth brought a stretching diving save from Randolph with a daisycutter of a drive from 25 yards, as they looked to come in to the ascendancy.

In a bid to shake things up, Stuart McCall brought on debutant Henrik Ojaama and Chris Humphrey for Ross Forbes and Bob McHugh and the impact was immediate.

With almost his first touch of the ball, Humphrey bounded down the right wing, got to the bye line and cut back for the Estonian Ojaama. The new signing was inches away from connecting, but as the ball ran behind him, Murphy rammed home his second of the game from close range. It was a cruel blow to Speirs’ side, as up until then, Queen’s Park had looked more likely to get the next goal.

However, the fatigue of their part time legs was evident for all to see, and they couldn’t cope with the running of Humphrey, Murphy, Ojaama and the third substitute Steven Lawless who was introduced in place of Daley.

Lawless was unlucky not to bag a second cup goal of the season when Murphy’s lofted pass allowed him a shot, but the legs of Parry thwarted the pint-sized hitman. A fourth goal did come though, and it was a beauty from the right boot of new boy Ojaama.

Once again, Humphrey burst past his man on the East Stand side and chipped the ball back to the Estonian. His first touch was to chest the ball away from goal, before composing himself and blasting the ball high in to the net from sixteen-yards.

It was sensational debut goal and put the gloss on a competent performance from ‘Well who progress into the 5th Round draw due to take place on Monday.

    Motherwell manager Stuart McCall:

“I thought Queen’s Park were excellent from the first minute to the last. They would have been disappointed losing the early goal but they kept at it.

“In the second half, they looked like the team who were going to score. For their whole attitude and the way they played, great credit goes to them.

“We did all right in patches but all that was missing for Queen’s Park today were their shooting boots. We can’t allow Inverness to have as many pot-shots at our goal next week.

“We had a couple of influential players in Steve Jennings and Keith Lasley missing today and we got the job done. But I think all the credit should go to Queen’s Park, they were excellent.

“We are through to the next round and there were some edgy games elsewhere but everything should be about Queen’s Park, who were terrific.”

    Queen’s Park manager Gardner Spiers:

“We have a number of good players and I think they did themselves justice today. What we will see tomorrow is a 4-0 defeat and that hurts us.

“It hurts the players and the supporters who I thought were fantastic as well.

“I’m disappointed with the score but certainly not the performance because I thought the guys were excellent.”

    TV: McCall adamant about attitude

‘Well boss Stuart McCall insists his squad have to have the correct mentality when they come up against Queen’s Park in the Scottish Cup tomorrow.

The Steelmen face the amateurs at Fir Park for the first time since February 1984, another Scottish Cup tie which the Steelmen won 3-0.

Former Scotland midfielder McCall would take a repeat tomorrow but insists his side have to be professional in their approach against the Spiders; Gardner Spiers’ men having won their last three consecutive games.

“It’s all about attitude and application from us,” said McCall.

“I said that before the Clyde game (in the Scottish Communities League Cup) and to be fair to our lads, it was, and we ran out comfortable 4-0 winners.

“There’s no doubt Queen’s Park will come and have a really good go. They’ve got a lot of young players and if our mindset is not right and our focus isn’t what it should be, then we will come unstuck.

“We’ve got to go out there, play at a good tempo, and get a result. Our home fans deserve a good performance and we’ll be doing all we can to give them it tomorrow.”

    TV: ‘Well complete Ojamaa signing

Motherwell have today completed the signing of Estonian forward Henrik Ojamaa on a deal until the end of the current season.

Ojamaa, 20, joins after two successful trial periods at Fir Park. The Estonian youth international was most recently with Finnish side Rovaniemen Palloseura (RoPS) but left the club at the end of the Veikkausliiga season.

Born in the Estonian capital of Tallin, Henrik progressed through the ranks of local side FC Flora before joining the youth set-up at English club Derby County. He progressed through the system, signing a professional contract in the summer of 2009.

He left Pride Park a year later having never played a first-team game, although a short loan spell at non-league Stafford Rangers proved worthwhile.

He then joined 2. Bundesliga cracks Alemannia Aachen and made his debut later that year before moving on again, spending another loan spell at Fortuna Sittard in the Dutch Eerste Divisie.

His short stay in Finland was successful although he was unable to prevent RoPS from dropping out the top league. He will now join up with Stuart McCall’s side and will push for a place in this weekend’s squad to face Queen’s Park in the William Hill Scottish Cup 4th Round.

Speaking exclusively to MFC TV, Henrik said, “I’ve been a free agent now for a few months and had a couple of options but as soon as I knew Motherwell was interested in having a look then it was always going to be my number one choice.

“I am now going to do my best to challenge for a place in the first-team and I’ll see where it goes from there. I have only been here a short time but I really like the place, the manager is great and it’s a good group of players.  If something could materialise in the next few months or at the end of the season that would be great but first I need to prove myself and I am hoping to do that.”

TV: Youths get set for Turkey trip

Gordon Young and his Under 19s squad jet off for a two-week training camp in Turkey tomorrow courtesy of the SFA led Leonardo Da Vinci programme.

It’s a part of the EU funded Lifelong Learning Programme for young people aged 18 or above who want to improve both their working and language skills while experiencing life in another European country.

The programme is also an opportunity for the participant and receiving organisation to exchange knowledge and ideas and to gain understanding of others by comparing their different cultures.

And on the eve of departing, Young admits he is looking forward to leaving the cold and wind behind in exchange for a better training environment for his players.

He told MFC TV: “Trips like this are very important and with the way football is going in this country over the next couple of years, hopefully a nod towards a more seasonal fixture list, winter training camps will become more common-place.

“We have an opportunity to go away and work hard in a warmer climate. The conditions in Scotland over the last month or so have made it very difficult to train; there hasn’t been a week gone by since November where we haven’t had to seek some sort of indoor facility.

“However, with the DaVinci programme, we have excellent conditions in which to train and more importantly, can give these players a unique insight into a different sort of working environment abroad.”
