Archibald was appointed lead development coach at Motherwell at the end of the March this year, after departing Partick Thistle.

The 45-year-old now joins Derek McInnes’ backroom staff ahead of the 2023/24 season.

We would like to thank Alan for his efforts since March and wish him well for the future.

Daniel Hunter doubled the lead five minutes into the second half with a fine strike from 25 yards.

Livi pulled a goal back just moments later but Motherwell held on to claim all three points.

    Motherwell 3-1 Aberdeen

    Motherwell 3-1 Aberdeen

Motherwell defeated Aberdeen 3-1 on Friday at Dalziel Park.

The young Steelmen took an early lead when Mo Adam intercepted a slack pass by Rodrigo Vitols and squared it to Mark Ferrie to cooly finish.

Aberdeen levelled the game midway through the first half when Arran Bone fouled Finlay Marshall in the box. Brendan Hamilton stepped up and sent Josh Bogan the wrong way.

In the second half, Alan Archibald brought on Richard Tambwe and within minutes he had the ball in the back of the net.

A low cross into the box wasn’t properly cleared and the young forward was on hand to fire home from close range.

Moments later Zack Flatman was pushed in the box and the referee didn’t hesitate to point to the spot.

Dylan Wells dispatched from the spot to seal a good win for Motherwell.

“It was a great three points,” lead development coach Alan Archibald said.

“At times, it was quite an ugly game. Aberdeen created us problems but credit to the players for getting us over the line.

“It’s a tough schedule at the minute, they’re playing two youth games and a reserve game a week.

“We’ve went on a run and we’ve found ourselves at the top end of the league, if we don’t get a chance to win the league we’ll certainly have a say in who does.

From now until the end of the season, I want to see a desire to win games. They’re, of course, developing as footballers but if you want to play first team football, you need to find ways to win games. That’s exactly what I seen today.”

The lead was then doubled in the 37th minute when Bevis Mugabi collected the ball 25 yards out and unleashed an unstoppable effort into the top corner.

Minutes later the Steelmen had a third when Jack Aitchison fired home from close range

Alan Archibald’s side extended their lead ten minutes into the second half. Young full-back Robbie Garcia got forward and finished from just inside the area.

    A working week // Motherwell B 2-1 Dundee United B

With no first-team action this week, manager Stuart Kettlewell insisted that hard work on the training pitch would continue regardless.

With Motherwell in cinch Reserve League action against Dundee United, it was an opportunity for first-team players to get minutes after some came off the bench at Celtic Park at the weekend.

Going a goal down early in the first half, the experienced and the youngsters had to show character to get themselves back in the game.

Shane Blaney scored a world-class free kick, something that is becoming rather common, before Joe Efford nudged his side ahead in the second half.

Lead development coach Alan Archibald was happy with the character his side showed to see out the game, as Motherwell only got a draw seven days ago against Kilmarnock at Rugby Park.

    Motherwell 2 – 1 Dundee United

Motherwell came from behind to beat Dundee United 2-1 in the Reserve League at K-Park.

Flynn Duffy gave the visitors the lead but goals either side of half-time secured the three points for Alan Archibald’s side.

An experienced Motherwell side found them one-down with just ten minutes on the clock.

Blaney’s clearance fell at the feet of Flynn Duffy and the United forward steadied himself and fired an unstoppable effort past Aitken from 25 yards.

Motherwell were nearly two goals down after 25 minutes.

Duffy was fouled in the box by Luca Ross and he stepped up looking for his second of his game but Kyle Aitken dived to his left made the save.

Just before half-time, Motherwell were back level.

Stuart McKinstry won a free-kick and what is becoming a familiar theme this season, Shane Blaney stepped up and curled the ball Adams.

Ten minutes into the second half, Joe Efford put Motherwell in front.

Lennon Miller’s header wasn’t properly cleared the American netted with a fine volley from 10 yards out.

More heroics into the Motherwell goal from Kyle Aitken prevented an equaliser just minutes later. The young ‘keeper pulled off three fine saves from point blank before the linesman’s flag went up.

Motherwell saw the game out and kept Alan Archibald’s undefeated run going.

Minutes but not the result // Kilmarnock Reserves 1-1 Motherwell Reserves

With a hectic schedule at Reserve and Under 18 level to close out the 2022/23 season, first-team players were called upon to turn out for the development team against Kilmarnock.

Going one down early on, Joe Efford continued his road back to first-team football with a nice finish minutes after going behind.

The match ended in a draw, and although players got the minutes they needed, lead development coach Alan Archibald still wants the team to produce the result also.
