Motherwell picked up the bonus point in the cinch Reserve League cup this afternoon against Kilmarnock at K-Park by winning the penalty shootout 4-2, with the game ending 1-1 after 90 minutes. 

Fraser Murray put Kilmarnock ahead with ten minutes remaining but Olly Crankshaw levelled the game in the 89th minute to take the game to the shootout.

Aston Oxborough would go on to save two out of Kilmarnock’s four penalties in the shootout, with Motherwell converting all four of their spot kicks.

It would be a game of few chances in the first half. Crankshaw had the ball in the net midway through the first period. The winger cut inside onto his right foot before finishing into the top corner but was adjudged to have been offside by the officials.

Oxborough was called into action to save Bobby Wales’ effort, which looked to be finishing into the corner. The Englishman got his hand to it to clear it away.

Oxborough would be involved again in the second half, with two saves from distance to keep the game level.

But Kilmarnock would dominate the ball more as the half went on and would make it count on 79 minutes. Kian Leslie crossed the ball into the danger area after some good work on the wing and Murray was on hand to head into the far corner to open the scoring.

The goal would kick Motherwell back into life and Crankshaw fired Motherwell on level terms in one of the last actions of the game. Crankshaw picked up the ball and drilled an effort from 20-yards into the bottom corner. 1-1.

Motherwell would have a golden chance to win the game after 90 minutes. Some good work from Ross Tierney would unleash Crankshaw who went through on goal but his effort was saved by the keeper.

Daniel Hunter, Stuart McKinstry and Olly Crankshaw all scored from the spot. Oxborough would save Kerr McInroy’s spot kick, with a strong hand to the bottom right.

Killie would score their next penalty however Oxborough got down well to the bottom right to save Murray’s effort from 12-yards.

Ross Tierney stepped up knowing if he finished, he would secure the bonus point for his side and he did just that, sending the keeper the wrong way.

After a lengthy time away from the action, our development team were in action against Hamilton in the cinch Reserve League cup. 

Failing to take a barrel load of chances in the first half, Hamilton scored the opener with their first sniff at goal just before half time.

After conceding a sloppy second goal, Motherwell continued to create but it would only be Kian Speirs who would get on the scoresheet.

Stuart Kettlewell insists there was elements of the games he was happy with and that his side should have won, however was left frustrated that his team didn’t make the most of their openings.

It was a tale of missed opportunities for a young Motherwell development team as they sunk to a 2-1 defeat against Hamilton Accies on Tuesday afternoon in the cinch Reserve League cup. 

Myles Gaffney and Ryan One had Accies 2-0 up in the early stages of the second half before Kian Speirs pulled one back. Controversy would strike with almost the last kick of the ball as Ally Gould’s goal was ruled out for offside despite being played on by two Hamilton defenders.

Motherwell started the game brightly and looked to get the opening right from the off. Shay Nevans was first to go close.

The young winger cut inside before driving a left footed strike towards goal, but his effort came crashing off the bar.

Logan Dunachie was next to try his luck. A cross into the box found the towering centre half but his header was cleared away before it could cross the line.

Motherwell continued to create, Speirs picked up the ball 20 yards from goal and had a go. His strike looked destined for the top corner but wastipped away by the keeper.

David Devine, currently on loan at Alloa, tried to convert in the middle of a scramble in the Accies penalty area but couldn’t find the back of the net with his shot.

Accies made Motherwell pay for missed chances just short of half time. Dunachie’s header back to keeper Aston Oxborough was intercepted with Gaffney scoring from Hamilton’s first chance of the match.

In the second half, the hosts doubled their advantage. Half time sub One finished at the near post past Oxborough after the Motherwell backline failed to clear their lines. 2-0.

Speirs looked to get one back but seen his 1v1 effort saved by the Accies stopper.

Full-back Ewan Wilson found himself in an advanced position but dragged his shot from the left hand side of the box wide.

Motherwell had a penalty shout somehow turned down when Mo Adam was fouled in the area but the referee signalled for free kick and adjudged the foul to have occurred from outside the box.

Speirs did eventually pull one back on 66 minutes. His strike from inside the box took a slight deflection and found the bottom corner to give Motherwell a path back into the game.

Continued pressure from Motherwell but no second goal was increasing frustration amongst the Motherwell squad and that was only enhanced in stoppage time.

Speirs, again at the heart of the attack, picked up the ball before finding Gould at the back post who finished on the volley to level the game. His celebration was cut short when the linesman raised the flag for offside and left Motherwell perplexed as to the reason.

Kian Speirs has joined Stenhousemuir on loan for the rest of the season.

The 17-year-old made his first-team debut in the first game of the season against St Mirren when he came off the bench in the second half.

The young midfielder made his debut on Saturday against Livingston in the Scottish Cup.

There has been numerous changes to the schedule for our reserve matches for the remainder of the campaign. 

Our first reserve league match of 2023 is against Queen of the South at Palmerston on Tuesday 17 January.

Kick off is 2pm.

We will then take on Hamilton Accies away from home on Tuesday 24 January.

Dates have still to be arranged for our away match to Livingston and our home fixture against Dundee United.

Daniel Hunter will remain on loan at Cumbernauld Colts until the end of the season. 

The midfielder has made seven appearances at the Lowland League side this season, scoring one goal which came on his debut.

The 18-year-old joined Colts in the summer and extents his stay to continue his game time.

We four loan boys in action on Saturday as they continued their development. 

Max Johnston

Max Johnston continued his fine run of form with another 90 minutes for Cove Rangers at Balmoral Stadium against Partick Thistle.

The full-back assisted Mitchel Megginson for the opener in the game after six minutes.

Partick Thistle equalised at the death in dramatic fashion as the Thistle stopper Jamie Sneddon headed in to snatch a point on the road.

Robbie Mahon

Robbie Mahon was an unused sub for Dunfermline as they drew 1-1 with Queen of the South.

Ewan Wilson

Albion Rovers couldn’t make it five games unbeaten in League 2 as the Wee Rovers lost 1-0 to Forfar.

Ewan Wilson played the full 90 in the backline but a first half Ben Armour goal was enough for Forfar to claim the win.

Logan Dunachie

East Kilbride were in Lowland League action against Gala Fairydean Rovers as they looked to push for top spot in the league.

Logan Dunachie was named at the heart of the defence in what was an action packed encounter. The defender played the full 90 minutes and despite being 2-1 down at the interval, Kilby won the game 5-4 on the road and are now third in the league.

Cumbernauld Colts snatched a late point against Spartans at Broadwood on Saturday.

Daniel Hunter played the full match with Billy Mortimer scoring an equaliser with seconds to go to get Cumbernauld a 1-1 draw.

Three of the seven loanees saw action this weekend.

Max Johnston

Off the back of his Scotland Under-21s debut on Thursday, Max played the full 90 in Cove’s 2-1 defeat at home to high-flying Morton.

Cove looked to be on course for a point after Leighton McIntosh equalised late on but former Motherwell man Robbie Crawford secured all three points for Ton who sit a point off the top of the Championship.

Scott Fox

Fox was an unused sub as Queen of the South thrashed Montrose 4-0 at home.

Robbie Mahon

Table-topping Dunfermline continued their fine form with a 0-2 win away to Peterhead

Robbie Mahon was an unused sub as he watched his teammates go seven points clear at the top.

Ewan Wilson

A clean sheet and three points for the young full-back.

Wilson completed 90 minutes as Albion Rovers saw off Stranraer with a 1-0 win.  The win creates a bit of breathing space for Rovers,  who sit four points off bottom.

Corey O’Donnell

O’Donnell was not involved in the squad at the weekend as Bonnyrigg Rose picked up a point against Stenhousemuir.

Logan Dunachie

The towering centre back got 90 minutes under his belt and a clean sheet as East Kilbride beat Abbey Vale FC in the third round of the South Challenge Cup.

Kilby go into the hat and take on Ross Vale in the fourth round.

Daniel Hunter

Hunter was left with no action this weekend as Cumbernauld Colts’ game against Berwick Rangers was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.

Our loan boys continued to get minutes in the legs this week as they will continue to play throughout the FIFA 2022 World Cup.

Max Johnston

Max Johnston continued his run of games playing the full match for Cove Rangers when they travelled to Arbroath.

Going behind in the first half, Cove fought until the end and equalised in stoppage time to earn a point.

Scott Fox

Scott Fox was an unused sub in Queen of the South’s 5-1 defeat to Alloa Athletic.

Robbie Mahon

Robbie Mahon got his first start for Dunfermline on Saturday at East End Park, where Clyde were the visitors.

Clyde, under the new management of Jim Duffy, came out of the traps flying and went 2-0 ahead. Mahon was a half time substitute as Dunfermline looked to get back into the game.

The match ended 2-2 after a second half comeback from the Pars.

Ewan Wilson

Fresh from his suspension, Ewan Wilson returned to the starting eleven for Albion Rovers as they travelled to promotion chasers East Fife.

The full back played the full 90 minutes, with Albion pulling off a terrific 3-2 to victory on the road.

Daniel Hunter was an unused substitute for Cumbernauld Colts when they beat Caledonian Braves 4-1 on Saturday at Broadwood.

Logan Dunachie

With two games in the space of three days, East Kilbride scored 11 goals this week, conceding none in the process.

With a 6-0 victory against Gretna and a 5-0 win against Berwick Rangers, Logan Dunachie played the full 90 in both fixtures as he rounded off an impressive week for Kilby.

Plenty minutes in the bag for our loan boys this week on loan, as they were in action midweek and at the weekend.

Keeping his place in the side, Max Johnston played the full 90 minutes when Queen’s Park were the visitors to The Balmoral Stadium.

Cove would run out 2-0 winners, with Johnston helping his side keep a clean sheet.

Scott Fox was an unused sub as Queen of the South beat FC Edinburgh 3-0 away from home.

Over 7000 were in attendance as Falkirk faced Dunfermline in League one.

Robbie Mahon was an unused sub as he watched his Dunfermline teammates win 1-0 at the Falkirk Stadium.

Ewan Wilson

Ewan Wilson wasn’t involved in the action on Saturday when Albion Rovers took on Stirling Albion.

The left back was serving a suspension after he seen red for a handball the weekend prior. Albion drew 1-1 with high flying Stirling.

Corey O’Donnell

After 45 minutes in the reserves, it was a return to first team action for Corey O’Donnell after a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

The forward came on in the 73rd minute for Bonnyrigg against Elgin at New Dundas Park. Despite a late comeback, Elgin hung on for a 3-2 win away from home.

Logan Dunachie

East Kilbride took on Stirling Uni on Saturday away from home.

Dunachie was an unused sub with Stirling claiming all three points with a 2-0 win.

Daniel Hunter

Daniel Hunter was on the bench for Cumbernauld Colts on Wednesday night, when they were beaten 4-2 by Gala Fairydean. Hunter played the last 27 minutes in the game.

He was an unused sub on Saturday against Cowdenbeath.
