Gaël Bigirimana’s Burundi are closing in on a historic first appearance at the Africa Cup of Nations.

The midfielder featured as his country thumped South Sudan 5-2 at the weekend, putting them second in their qualification group with one game to play.

With Mali having qualified after a 1-0 win over Gabon, Bigirimana’s side just need to avoid defeat at home to Gabon on 22 March to qualify.

Burundi are two points ahead of Gabon in the final qualifying spot, and managed a 1-1 draw away to their group rivals earlier this year.

A corner just before half time was converted by Morelos, who found the back of the net with a header from the post.

Both Rangers and Motherwell made changes going into the second 45, with Andy Rose coming on for Ryan Bowman and Gareth McAuley taking the place of Nicola Katic.

Middleton sent a wide ball fizzing into the box, past Trevor Carson and found the back of the net to give the hosts a 4-1 lead in the 59th minute.

Then, Arfield had his shot at a second goal – as he was left with plenty of space in the box, and took his time comfortably sending the ball past Carson.
