The journey to another trip to the national stadium continues in the Scottish Cup with a visit to face Dundee on Saturday.

And, just over two months after the Steelmen fell agonisingly short in the Betfred Cup final, the chance to reach another quarter final awaits.

“We are highly motivated to do that,” said the manager when asked about the team’s attempts to return to Mount Florida. “The last run raised the profile of the football club.

“It helps to attract players, which we saw in January, and it gives everything a lift around the place. Financially and for morale as well.

“It’s a big, big game for us. It will be a tough game for us away from home but we are confident, based on recent form.”

January signing Curtis Main has been in the goals since his arrival from Portsmouth, netting four in his first six matches.

The striker was visibly annoyed when he left the pitch after scoring one and setting up the other in the 2-0 midweek win over St Johnstone, later saying he was disappointed he hadn’t netted more from his other chances.

“Yeah, disappointed he’s only scored four goals in six,” joked the manager. “But I think that’s testament to him and the other players. We have created a lot of chances.

“Curtis has done great since he’s come up. He feels he can do even better and so do I.

“The fitter he gets and the stronger he gets, I think we will see more from both him and Nadir.”

As a squad overall, the winter break has re-energised the group and set the Steelmen up for an important second half of the season.

And for Andy Rose, cup football is an important factor in building momentum.

The Australian revealed the hard work going on ahead of Saturday’s big clash in Dundee.

“Cup competitions are certainly a way of building momentum,” the midfielder said. “Looking back, some of the cup matches we’ve played have been some of my favourite of the season.

“Across the squad there’s a really good feeling since the turn of the year and results have been pretty good. Performances have been very good too.

“Beating Hamilton in the last round was excellent. It was an important win for us in front of our fans. I’m looking forward to this one.”

Andy Rose is looking forward to more knockout football as the Steelmen prepare to take on Dundee in the Scottish Cup.

And he believes that cup football can build momentum around the club, after the trip to Hampden back in November.

Motherwell’s match with Celtic in the Ladbrokes Premiership on Sunday, March 18 has been brought forward by 15 minutes.

The game at Fir Park, which will be broadcast on Sky Sports, will now kick off at 2.15pm.

Motherwell season ticket holders and Well Society members can get a special discount on ticket prices for our William Hill Scottish Cup fifth round tie against Dundee.

Ticket prices for the match, due to be played at Dens Park on Saturday, February 10, are set at £15 for adults, £5 for over 65s and students, and £4 for under 18s for season ticket holders and Well Society members, if bought from the Fir Park ticket office before 5pm on Friday, February 9.

Normal prices are £20 for adults, £10 for concessions and £5 for under 18s.

Tickets will also be on sale on Tuesday ahead of the Ladbrokes Premiership match with St Johnstone.

Should the game at Dens Park go to a replay, the match will be played at Fir Park on Tuesday, February 20.

Goalscorers Allan Campbell and Curtis Main, along with goalkeeper Trevor Carson, gave their reaction after the 2-0 win over St Johnstone in the Ladbrokes Premiership.

Stephen Robinson felt his side earned the right to play some impressive football after a hard-fought first half performance.

Two second half goals and a dominant showing in the second period ultimately led to another 2-0 home victory, and passage back in to the top six.

But it was all down to the effort and determination shown by his players from the first whistle.

“I thought it was a very good, well-deserved win,” the Northern Irishman said, “in the first half I picked a team that would be physically strong because we know St Johnstone are a hard team to play against.

“But I thought we outfought and out-battled them in the first half. We could have got the ball down and played a bit more though, but we earned the right to do that in the second half.”

He added: “In the second half I thought the performance was terrific. We had a lot of chances and we could have won the game by more, but that’s what we were about in the early parts of the season. We physically dominated teams, then earned the right to play.”

Motherwell maintained their strong start to the year with a 2-0 home win over St Johnstone.

A rather scrappy first half was followed up by a solid second 45, in which the Steelmen controlled and ran out victors thanks to goals from Allan Campbell and Curtis Main.

But, in truth, ‘Well’s number nine could have had more than one, and went closest to breaking the deadlock during a hard fought first period.

Collecting the ball on the edge of the area, the striker struck a venomous effort on goal, beating Alan Mannus but being denied by the top side of the crossbar.

Stephen Robinson’s side came flying out of the traps after the break though, and should have opened the scoring when Main cleverly squared the ball across the six-yard box with his back to goal, but nobody was on hand to finish it off.

The striker was then fed through one-on-one thanks to a lovely through ball from Nadir Çiftçi, but he was denied by a terrific stop from the foot of Mannus.

The lead came in the 65^th minute though, when Allan Campbell showed incredible desire to burst in to the box to fire home Andy Rose’s low cross.

Five minutes later, ‘Well were two in front and Main had a well-deserved fourth goal in his first six games.

Tait’s ball found the forward on the edge of the area, whose clever touch afforded himself a yard to finish low in to the far corner.

Three goals in his first three league games.

Few strikers manage to settle in to new surroundings quite as well as Curtis Main has at Motherwell. Add to that his assist in the Scottish Cup, and the new signing has got off to a near-perfect start, directly contributing to a goal in every one of his first four games.

But the thing that stands out most about Fir Park’s new number nine is that he isn’t basking in the glory following his fast start.

His first put Ross County to the sword in a 2-0 win, his second snatched a dramatic late goal against Hearts at Tynecastle, and his third spurred on a dramatic late fightback against Hibs. He then nearly found the top corner in stoppage time at Easter Road, only to be denied by an excellent stop from Ofir Marciano.

But he wants more.

“It’s just the start,” he said. “I’m here to score far more than three. I’m not thinking too much about the goals I’ve scored, I’m always thinking about the next game and the next goal.

“But I think one of the main things for me is how welcome I’ve felt in such a short space of time.

“From day one here I just knew that I had made the right choice. The manager and all of the players and coaching staff, as well as everyone around the club, really did make me feel welcome.”

With the second of two games in quick succession awaiting the ‘Well on Tuesday night, Curtis is hopeful of picking up some important points in a spell he believes to be crucial for the remainder of the season.

“When you look at the fixtures coming up now, you can certainly see how important they are,” he added

“We’re going up against sides that are near us points-wise and if we want to fulfil our aspirations of a top six spot then we need to beat these teams to do that. For me, these next home games are very big for us and for our season.”

Linking up with fellow new striker Nadir Çiftçi has so far led to some tantalising moments which ‘Well fans will rightly be eager to see more of.

“Nads has come in as well and made things very easy for me to settle in to.

“When we linked up for that goal against Ross County it all came from the movement and the pass from Nadir, so one of the important things about both of us is that we are going to be selfless with anyone in the team.

“And things are going to get even better for us too, with Ryan Bowman and George Newell coming back in the coming weeks hopefully, it shows that there is depth and quality in this squad.

“That comes from the manager though. He has that attitude instilled in the dressing room and there is such a togetherness around the club.

“We’re all very hard-working and honest with each other. There’s competition for places all over the park so we don’t only encourage one another, but we also drive each other by pushing and pushing for a place in the team.

“That’s crucial in football, and all the lads will agree. No one will duck away from that challenge in our dressing room. That suits me as a person so it’s been easy for me to feel at home here in Motherwell.”
