In Numbers: Preparing to face Celtic

Celtic play host to Stephen Robinson’s side in a rearranged Ladbrokes Premiership match on Wednesday night.

Here’s the game previewed in numbers.

    Six

With Celtic in third spot and Motherwell ninth, six positions separate the two clubs in the Ladbrokes Premiership.

Celtic sit a point off top with 33 points after 16 matches, while Motherwell have 18 from 17 games.

    14

Brendan Rodgers’ side are the model of consistency at home on domestic duty, picking up maximum points from games at Celtic Park this season.

Ominously, they have netted 14 times in their last three league games on home turf, putting five past both Hearts and Kilmarnock, and four past Hibernian.

    19

The 19th of December is a significant day. Three years ago on that date, Motherwell went to Celtic and picked up a huge 2-1 victory.

This fixture coincidentally also falls on 19 December. And if you’re looking for more omens, the match referee is the same for both matches, with Bobby Madden the man in the middle.

    Robinson hoping for consistency

Stephen Robinson is hoping to see his side follow up from Saturday’s win over St Johnstone as they prepare for a trip to take on Celtic.

The Steelmen visit Parkhead for the Premiership encounter after recording a first win at McDiarmid Park in over six years.

And the ‘Well boss is eager to see his side follow up with a big performance against Brendan Rodgers’ side.

He said: “To go again after a result and performance like that will be a challenge. The hardest thing in football is getting that again and again, but that’s what we’re asking of these boys.”

Setting the scene on the trip to Celtic

Motherwell head to Celtic on Wednesday night for their first trip to face the Scottish champions of the season.

Here’s a look ahead to the game.

    Second meeting

The two sides faced up for the first time this season two weeks ago, with a 1-1 draw at Fir Park ensuring the third consecutive stalemate at Fir Park with the champions.

At Celtic Park, it will be three years to the day on Wednesday that the ‘Well last won in the east end of Glasgow.

Louis Moult’s double ensured a surprise victory on the day, although only one player – Liam Grimshaw – remains at the club from the starting team that day.

    Form guide

The Steelmen have won two, drawn one and lost two of their last five fixtures.

The last five have seen wins over Aberdeen and St Johnstone, as well as the aforementioned draw with Celtic. Defeats came at the hands of Hearts and Livingston.

Celtic have had identical form. Wins over Aberdeen and Kilmarnock have been punctuated by defeats to RB Salzburg and Hibernian, as well as the draw at Fir Park.
