Motherwell host St Mirren in the Ladbrokes Premiership in what is an important game for both sides on Saturday.

Oran Kearney’s Buddies come in to the encounter on the back of a narrow 2-1 defeat at the hands of Aberdeen.

Searching for points

St Mirren sit nine points behind the Steelmen ahead of Saturday’s clash in the Ladbrokes Premiership.

With a small gap now separating the bottom two sides, Saints will be eager to close the deficit and not become cut further adrift ahead of the winter break.

Three points for Oran Kearney’s men would not only help them pull closer to Hamilton, but could also see them get ahead of Dundee mathematically instead of just goal difference.

Must find consistency

Over the course of the campaign, Saints best run without defeat has been just two matches.

A draw with Dundee was immediately followed up with a win over Hearts, and it’s the best the club have managed this term.

Finding some form of consistency could be crucial to the Buddies campaign.

Experience in their ranks

Finding themselves towards the foot of the table, Saints will call on some of their experienced players to help turn the tide.

33-year-old Anton Ferdinand is certainly not lacking in that department, and alongside the likes of Stephen McGinn and Adam Hammill, makes up a solid core for the Buddies.

The Paisley outfit is also blessed with some exciting youngsters too, icluding Ethan Erhahon and the on-loan duo of Alfie Jones and Matty Willock.

Assistant boss Keith Lasley says the three-game spell before the winter break could be defining for Motherwell’s season.

The Steelmen face St Mirren on Saturday, before welcoming Kilmarnock on Boxing Day and then travelling to face Hamilton Academical on 29 December.

Allan Campbell knows the importance of the next three matches as Motherwell prepare for the visit of St Mirren on Saturday.

The midfielder is eager to take things one game at a time though, and believes the club’s recent home form can propel them to victory against the Saints.

“These home games are the ones we need to go out there and win, so we go in to this one with motivation,” the 20-year-old said.

Head to head

Motherwell won the opening encounter with the Buddies in 2018/19, picking up a 2-0 victory at St Mirren Park in October.

David Turnbull and Chris Cadden got the goals on a wet Hallowe’en night in Paisley, a result which proved a catalyst for Stephen Robinson’s side.

Wins over Aberdeen, Dundee and St Johnstone followed since, as well as a draw with Celtic and defeats to Rangers, Hearts, Celtic and Livingston.

St Mirren have picked up one win in seven since that match, defeating Hearts at home. Away draws with Dundee and Hibernian have been accompanied by defeats to Rangers, Hamilton, Livingston and Aberdeen.

Liam Donnelly, Craig Tanner, Trevor Carson and Chris Cadden are out. Peter Hartley is unlikely to feature.

Stephen Robinson will be banned from the dugout for Motherwell’s next three matches.

The manager admitted a breach of disciplinary rule 203 during the match with Rangers at Ibrox in November.

A judicial panel hearing at Hampden on Thursday ruled he should serve a suspension.

A further suspended ban of two games has also been handed down, and will automatically come into effect if Robinson breaches the same rule again before the end of the 2019/20 season.

Motherwell suffered defeat in Glasgow, going down 3-0 to Celtic as a result of three first half goals.

Anthony Ralston, Scott Sinclair and Mikey Johnston got the goals as the champions went back to the top of the table.

Conor Sammon, Andy Rose and Mark Gillespie were left frustrated by the manner in which Motherwell conceded goals, despite an organised performance at Celtic Park.

Two goals in quick succession, as well as a strike on the stroke of half time, left the Steelmen trailing by three at the break.

Stephen Robinson was left to lament errors and his side’s failure to “be brave on the ball”, particularly in the first half of their 3-0 loss to Celtic.

The Steelmen started organised at the champions, but were outdone by three goals before the interval to consign them to defeat.
