Motherwell keep top six hopes alive

Motherwell kept their top six dreams going with an emphatic 3-0 victory over St Johnstone.

Second half goals from Elliott Frear, David Turnbull and Richard Tait sealed all three points, keeping the Steelmen within five points of Hibernian with two games to go.

A difficult first half saw the hosts have plenty of the ball, but struggle to break down a Saints defence which sat in and stood firm.

Chris Kane had a glorious chance early on for the visitors, before they were given a penalty for a foul which was hotly contested.

With anger rising, Mark Gillespie got down early to keep out Liam Craig’s spot kick effort to keep his clean sheet.

The second half saw a scrappy opening 20 minutes, before the introductions of Frear and the returning Chris Cadden sparked Motherwell’s attacking play to life.

Dunne’s pass into Main’s feet saw the big striker hold off his marker, spin and play in Frear, who curled his first-time effort into the far corner of the net.

Ten minutes later, it was two. Campbell was the creator, laying in Turnbull who played a tidy finish past Zander Clark.

Then, in stoppage time, skipper Richard Tait cut in from the left side and placed a bouncing shot into the far right corner of the net.

Need to Know: A look at the Saints

Need to Know: A look at the Saints

St Johnstone head to Fir Park on Saturday looking to put paid to Motherwell’s top six ambitions, and push on themselves to catch Hibs.

Here’s a look at our weekend opponents.

    Winless run arrested

Wednesday night’s 1-0 win over St Mirren ended the Perth Saints’ run of nine games without a victory.

Tommy Wright’s men had racked up eight defeats and one draw at Ibrox along the way, before Chris Kane’s goal got them back on track.

    In the top six hunt

That win over St Mirren lifted St Johnstone one point above Motherwell in the league table, and within four of sixth-placed Hibernian with three games to go.

Both team on Saturday are looking for three points to keep them in with a chance of catching the Edinburgh club, and making a late burst into the top half of the table.

    Top six stalwarts

The 2017/18 campaign was the first since 2010/11 where St Johnstone weren’t in the top six of the Ladbrokes Premiership after the split.

An eighth placed finish ended a run of three consecutive fourth-placed finishes, having also finished sixth twice and also in third spot.

In Numbers: Preparing for St Johnstone

Motherwell host St Johnstone on Saturday, with both teams slugging it out to catch Hibernian for place in the Ladbrokes Premiership’s top six.

Here’s the game previewed in numbers.

    Six

It’s a battle to be in the running for sixth spot on Saturday, as both teams try and chase down Hibernian with games running out.

Motherwell currently sit on 40 points, five behind the Edinburgh club with three matches to play. St Johnstone, meanwhile, are on 41, after defeating St Mirren on Wednesday night.

    Nine

St Johnstone ended a nine-game run without a victory in all competitions when they beat St Mirren 1-0.

In that run they lost eight and drawn one, with their one positive result coming in a 0-0 draw at Rangers, before the home win over the Buddies.

    95

Up to Saturday, Motherwell will have went 95 days without a home defeat in the Ladbrokes Premiership.

Kilmarnock’s 1-0 win on Boxing Day was the last time the Steelmen went down at Fir Park on league business. Since then, Hibernian, Livingston, Hearts and Hamilton Academical have all been defeated.

Setting the scene on St Johnstone

Setting the scene on St Johnstone

Motherwell host St Johnstone in the Ladbrokes Premiership on Saturday, with both teams still chasing down Hibernian for a place in the league’s top six come the split.

Here’s an early look ahead to the match.

    Tale of the tape

Both sides retain top six ambitions heading into the game on Saturday.

St Johnstone’s Wednesday night win over St Mirren put them above Motherwell in seventh, just four points behind sixth-placed Hibernian with three fixtures to play.

Motherwell currently sit five points behind Hibs, who travel to Livingston on Friday night. A win on Saturday for Stephen Robinson’s men could close the gap again as the race to the split nears its conclusion.

    Head to head

Both teams have won on opposition territory in the two games so far this season.

An October encounter at Fir Park saw the Saints score a last-gasp winner from a corner, with Jason Kerr’s goal sparking an eight-game unbeaten, which included six victories.

Motherwell then ended that run in December, with Danny Johnson and Tom Aldred netting in a deserved 2-1 win at McDiarmid Park.
