Motherwell put in a performance but lack the killer touch as they draw 0-0 at home with Hibernian.

A lack of cutting edge ultimately cost Motherwell as they were held at home by Hibernian.

Stephen Robinson’s side had a host of chances in both halves but couldn’t make their attacking prowess pay, as they reduced the visitors to limited opportunities.

Motherwell made two changes from the team which won at Aberdeen on Wednesday night. Christopher Long was forced out through injury and replaced by Ross MacIver, with Mark O’Hara dropping to the bench with Christian Ilic coming in.

Almost immediately the chances started to flow. James Scott, causing all sorts of trouble for Tom James down the left, cut inside and flashed a shot wide of goal early on.

Jake Carroll saw a free-kick from close range beaten away by Ofir Marciano, Allan Campbell set a shot wide from inside the area and Liam Polworth sent a shot narrowly over the crossbar from distance as Motherwell peppered the visitors’ goal.

Hibs looked threatening on the counter, but goalkeeper Mark Gillespie was rarely troubled in the first half.

Motherwell set out in similar fashion in the second period but it was Jack Ross’ side who had the biggest chance of the opening stages.

After Gillespie beat away an initial shot, Florian Kamberi found himself in at the back post from a cross from the right. His steer back across goal hit the inside of the right post and bounced back, with Declan Gallagher just on hand to knock the ball behind.

Motherwell changed up the entire frontline across the second half to try and carve out more chances, but found Hibs standing firm.

The biggest chance fell to substitute Christy Manzinga. Getting the ball out of his feet as he flew towards goal, his left-footed shot was netbound all the way but Marciano got the slightest of fingertip touches to turn it onto the crossbar.

The story so far

Since Jack Ross’ arrival in mid-November, Hibernian have kicked on in their pursuit of a top six finish.

Victory over Motherwell at Easter Road in the manager’s first game in charge kicked off a run of four wins, one draw and three defeats in the league.

Sitting sixth and with a five-point advantage over Kilmarnock in seventh, the next few games will go a long way to determining whether they’ll be in the top half come the split.

Hibs have won one and drawn one since returning from the winter break, with a 2-1 comeback win over Hamilton Academical in the league in midweek following a 2-2 draw at Dundee United in the Scottish Cup.

Before the break, Ross’ side won two and lost three, beating Aberdeen and Hearts but losing to Celtic, Rangers and Livingston.

On their travels this campaign, Hibs have won three, drawn two and lost six, including a 3-0 loss at Motherwell in August.

Three to watch

Martin Boyle

Having had to watch on from the sidelines as Hibernian suffered a poor beginning to season, Martin Boyle certainly has made up for lost time since returning from his second serious knee injury of 2019.

Boyle was named the Scottish Premiership Player of the Month for December after a superb month for the 26-year-old, where he scored doubles in victories over Aberdeen and Hearts.

The Australia international will be hoping for much better fortunes in 2020, having undergone knee surgery twice last year.

Scott Allan

Hibs boss Jack Ross has pledged to improve the less glamorous side of Scott Allan’s game, which should come as a warning shot to the rest of the sides in the Scottish Premiership.

Allan has demonstrated his abilities in delivering a killer pass and also in finding the net with seven goals to his name this season, but Ross is still looking for more.

He lavished praise on the 28-year-old after he contributed assists for both of Martin Boyle’s goals in the 2-0 derby success at Tynecastle, a performance he felt showed his willingness to improve all aspects of his game.

Stephane Omeonga

Belgian midfielder Stephane Omeonga sealed a surprise return to Easter Road last week and straight away set his sights on recapturing the form that helped him establish himself as a firm favourite among the Hibees faithful.

Omeonga, who featured for Belgium in the Under 21 World Cup in 2019, played 17 times for Hibs last season and his box-to-box style won over the fans.

The 23-year-old spent the first half of the season on loan at Cercle Brugge from his parent club Genoa. He made his return to action for the Hibees as a second half substitute in the 2-1 midweek win over Hamilton.

Hibs came from behind to win 2-1 at home to Hamilton Academical on Wednesday, registering their second win in five games to go with a draw and two defeats.

Head to head

Both sides have won on home turf against the other in the 2019/20 season.

Motherwell were 3-0 victors back in August at Fir Park, with Sherwin Seedorf, Liam Donnelly and Jermaine Hylton netting.

At Easter Road in November, Hibernian came from behind to win 3-1 after Liam Polworth’s early goal was cancelled out by Christian Doidge, Florian Kamberi and Daryl Horgan.

Motherwell pulled four points clear in third spot with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Aberdeen.

Liam Donnelly scored the decisive goal in first half stoppage time, heading in Liam Polworth’s precise free-kick delivery.

Aberdeen threw everything at getting an equaliser in the second half, throwing five forwards on in a late salvo, but a dogged Motherwell display saw the visitors hold firm and take the points.

Both sides had limited chances on goal in the first half, with Aberdeen enjoying more of the ball but less of the clear cut chances.

Christopher Long was the first to seriously test the scoresheet, seeing his low shot from a tight angle on the right side beat Joe Lewis, but Shay Logan was alive to stab it away from potentially finding the net.

At the other end, Andrew Considine had the hosts’ biggest chance. Logan’s cross from the right was flicked on by Cosgrove to the back post and into the stride of the left back. But he snatched at his shot, allowing Gillespie to stand tall and steer the ball away with his feet.

Long was then forced off injured after being caught heavily on the edge of the box by Taylor. Referee Willie Collum ruled the ball had been won, but the striker had to go off to be replaced by Christian Ilic.

The Croatian would sting the palms of Joe Lewis with a fierce effort from the edge of the area as the half looked to be wearing to a goalless close.

But the opener would come in first half stoppage time. Polworth’s pinpoint delivery from a free-kick on the right hand side sailed over everyone and into the path of Donnelly at the back post.

The Northern Irishman, recently back from injury, peeled away from everyone to head the ball into the ground and into the left corner of the net to send the travelling support wild and send his side in ahead at the break.

The second half saw Motherwell trying to hit on the counter as Aberdeen threw everything at getting something out of the match.

The hosts caused some concern with balls in from wide areas, but the hard work and determination from everyone in a Motherwell jersey saw the team hold firm and take all three points back down the road.
