    The Story of the Match

A place at Hampden is up for grabs for the winner of this quarter-final clash.

The two sides met just over a fortnight ago. On that occasion Celtic narrowly won 2-1.

The Steelmen reached the quarter-final by overcoming Inverness CT 4-0 at Fir Park in August. Celtic also scored four, beating Ross County 1-4 in Dingwall.

You’d have to go back to 2013 to find the last time Motherwell beat Celtic at home but Steven Hammell’s men will be looking to right that record under the Fir Park floodlights.

    Motherwell 1 – 2 Rangers

    Motherwell 1 – 2 Rangers

Motherwell suffered a narrow 1-2 defeat against Rangers at Fir Park on Sunday.

Stuart McKinstry’s first goal in claret and amber wasn’t enough to stage a comeback after Malik Tillman and John Lundstram gave the visitors a two-goal lead.

Steven Hammell went into the game with a depleted squad, with Joe Efford, Louis Moult, Blair Spittal and Connor Shields missing from last weekend’s defeat to Hibernian. Into the starting line-up came Ross Tierney, Josh Morris and Stuart McKinstry.

Tillman and Kent had early chances but the Motherwell defence soaked up the pressure and looked comfortable enough, with neither goalkeeper having much to do.

Motherwell came out in the second half and had a big chance to take the lead.  Sean Goss played in van Veen but on his weaker foot, he failed to steer the ball into the corner, leaving McGregor with a comfortable stop.

Two minutes later the visitors were 0-1 up.

Tillman picked up the ball just inside his own half and was not dealt with by the Motherwell defence. One drop of the shoulder and he found himself through on goal, cooly dispatching past Kelly.

Having defended so well up to that pont, that was a frustrating one for Steven Hammell.

From there the Steelmen looked well organised but still failed to trouble McGregor.

John Lundstram added a second in the 70th minute. His header from a corner was deflected past Kelly.

With ten minutes to go, McKinstry gave Motherwell a life-line.

Josh Morris won a free-kick on the left wing and the on-loan midfielder curled his cross/shot over the head of McGregor.

The goal re-energised the Fir Park faithful but it proved to be too little too late for Steven Hammell’s men, who now face Celtic mid-week in the Premier Sports Cup.

    The story of the match

Motherwell will be looking to bounce back from defeat to Hibs last weekend.  The Steelmen finished with ten men and probably deserved more from the game.

Sunday’s opponents Rangers have won their last three league games, including two 4-0 victories.

Steven Hammell’s men will be looking to end a dismal home record against Rangers with the last league win coming in 2002.

One moment can change games // Hibernian 1-0 Motherwell

Motherwell were on the road for the third time in seven days as they travelled down the M8 to the capital to take on Hibernian in the cinch Premiership at Easter Road.

In a frantic first half, neither team could stamp their authority on the game.

At the start of the second period, Motherwell shouts for a penalty were waved away by Grant Irvine after Connor Shields went down in the area.

It would be Shields who would be involved in the biggest turning point in the match, after failing to clear the ball, Ryan Porteous raced through on goal but Shields pulled the defender to the ground and was shown a red card.

Porteous would get on the end of Boyle’s deflected cross to net the opener and subsequently, the winner.

With ten men on the park, Motherwell continued to create half chances but couldn’t find the equaliser and went back to North Lanarkshire empty handed despite a hearty showing from Steven Hammell’s men.

    Hibernian 1 – 0 Motherwell

    Hibernian 1 – 0 Motherwell

Ten-man Motherwell left the capital empty-handed after a 1-0 defeat to Hibs.

Ryan Porteous’ header in the 67th minute was enough to give the Edinburgh side the three points.

Steven Hammell went unchanged for his side’s third away game in the space of a week and they got off to a lively start, with Sean Goss firing just wide of the target in the opening minutes.

Hibs then threatened and probably should have taken the lead but Kelly was on hand to save Boyle’s shot as he broke clear. Solholm then had react quickly to get across the box and block Youan’s shot after he found himself clear inside the area.

As both sides settled into the game, the action settled down too, with a Joe Efford shot wide of the target  being tht only threat on goal before half-time.

Twelve minutes into the second half the Steelmen were reduced to ten men. Connor Shields had tracked back and as Porteous broke clear, he hauled him to the deck with little complaint.

From there it was an uphill task and ten minutes later Hibs took the lead.

Boyle’s cross from the right was deflected into the air and Porteous beat Solholm to head the ball past Kelly.

‘Well huffed and puffed with an effort from Goss and late pressure from Moult and Efford not enough to snatch a point.
