Motherwell’s Fortunes

Motherwell’s 3-0 defeat in Edinburgh ended their hopes of finishing 7th in the table. That loss was only their third in eight games.

The Steelmen could still move up a place into 8th, but would need to win and hope Hibernian lose to Livingston.

These two sides have faced off on three occasions this season, with all three ending in draws.

Opposition Report

St Johnstone come into this game fighting for their Premiership lives. They are currently 11th, in the playoff position with nearest rivals Ross County two points ahead.

The two played against each other on Wednesday night, which ended in a 1-1 draw with the Perth side scoring in stoppage time to keep them in the fight.

It was a clean sweep for Dimitar Mitov, who collected 11 accolades at the club’s player of the year event. including the player of the year and the players’ player of the year. That has rounded off what has been a successful season for the shot stopper, where has missed only two games.

Motherwell’s final away game of 23/24 ended in a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Hibernian at Easter Road.

Myyzian Maolida opened the scoring from a controversial spot kick before Martin Boyle netter either wide of half-time.

Both sides took a while to settle into the game but it was arguably the visitors who created the better of the early chances.

Georgie Gent threaded an excellent ball through the Hibs defence but Paul Hanlon recovered well to thwart San Nicholson.

The two combined again moments later but this time Wollacott in the Hibernian goal quite easily saved the midfielder’s header.

Hibs started to turn the screw and were denied the opener when Martin Boyle’s sot from range was deflected off the post.

Moments later the home side took the lead. A ball was fizzed into Maolida and he flicked it onto the hand of the onrushing Stephen O’Donnell. Referee Iain Snedden wasted no time in pointing to the spot and the Comoros International sent Liam Kelly the wrong way.

Maolida was again involved at Hibs doubled their lead minutes later, as he raced down the left and curled a cross in for Martin Boyle to steer home.

Stuart Kettlewell looked to his bench  or an answer, bringing on Harry Paton for Andy Halliday at the break but within ten minutes they found themselves three down. Lewis Stevenson’s cross from the left was knocked clear as far as Martin Boyle who cut inside and powerfully fired past Liam Kelly.

Motherwell started to play some nice football, with some neat passing combinations in midfield but it lacked a cutting edge.

When they finally did carve open the Hibs defence, allowing Theo Bair to expertly slot into the net, the linesman’s flag went up and Sam Nicholson had drifted inches offside.

The Steelmen huffed and puffed but, a chance for Moses Ebiye aside, the Hibernian goalkeeper was rarely troubled and the Steelmen headed back to Lanarkshire empty-handed.

Stuart Kettlewell has been pleased with the way his side have conducted themselves over the last couple matches, but insists there is still lots to be playing for and there should be no letting up.

Motherwell’s Fortunes

Motherwell’s hot run of form in 2024 continued in the Highlands on Saturday, dispatching Ross County with a wonderful 5-1 win. Blair Spittal got on the scoresheet twice, with Harry Paton, Paul McGinn and Davor Zdravkovski also scoring.

That result took Motherwell up to 7th, albeit with Aberdeen still to play the following day.

Aberdeen beat Hibernian 4-0 at Easter Road, which take them up to seventh. With two games to go, the Steelmen are a point behind the Dons. Hibernian are a point behind Motherwell in ninth, with the three teams only separated by two points.

With a win, the lowest position Motherwell could finish the season is eighth.

Opposition Report

Hibernian’s hopes of finishing top of the bottom six were dented in their last match, as they lost out 4-0 to Aberdeen.

It’s been four losses, a draw and a win in their last six. Motherwell have the upper hand over Hibs this season, with Motherwell winning one and the other two ending in draws.

Myziane Maolida has been a shining light for Hibernian this season since his arrival, and will want to finish the season strongly. Since his arrival in January, he has eight goals and one assist in 16 appearances.

With safety secured and seventh in their sights, Motherwell made the long trip to Dingwall on a sunny Saturday afternoon.

A fixture that has seen raining goals this season, this match got off to a similar fashion.

Blair Spittal latched on a Ross Laidlaw error to put his team in front. Despite being pegged back moments later, Paul McGinn scored his first Motherwell goal and first goal in two years to get the Steelmen ahead before the interval.

From then on, the visitors were in full control.

Spittal scored another wonderful goal with ten minutes to go, before substitutes Harry Paton and Davor Zdravkovksi put cherries on the cake before the end.

Motherwell came away from the Highlands with a resounding 1-5 win in Dingwall.

Goals from Blair Spittal and Paul McGinn had the away side up at the break before Spittal, Zdravkovski and Paton added gloss to the scoreline late on.

County, who came into this enounter with only one home defeat in eight, were on the ropes early as the visitors started brightly and nearly took a lead when Andy Halliday was slid in on the edge of the box,  but the midfielder’s effort was matched by Laidlaw who made a fine stop.

The Steelmen were looking dangerous but their lead came in an unexpected fashion. Liam Kelly angled a ball forward which harmlessly ended up at Ross Laidlaw but the County ‘keeper spilled it straight to Blair Spittal who gratefully fired home.

County didn’t take long to respond, drawing level five minutes later. Disappointingly it was from a Motherwell corner, which Brophy broke away from and slid in Simon Murray who cooly slotted past Kelly.

As the game started to even out, it looked as though both sides would head down the tunnel level, probably deservedly so, but Paul McGinn had other ideas.

Georgie Gent’s free-kick was again fumbled by Laidlaw and it landed kindly to the feet of the former Scotland International who fired in his first Motherwell goal and first time hitting the net since May 2022.

Don Cowie made three changes at the break as County looked to find a way back in to the match to edge away from relegation trouble for all their hard work and endeavour, they rarely troubled Liam Kelly.

Indeed, as Motherwell looked to see the game out, they broke forward through Theo Bair and he laid it on a plate for Blair Spittal to notch his second of the game with a superb curler into the top corner.

At that point it looked like game over but the Steelmen weren’t finished yet.

Theo Bair burst in behind the defence and with a shot looking likely, he unselfishly pulled it back to his teammate Davor Zdravkovski who powered it into the net for his first goal in claret and amber.

‘Well weren’t finished there as Harry Paton was sent into the box, with a moment of brilliance from Blair Spittal, allowing the Canadian to slot into the bottom corner.

Motherwell now take on Hibernian, with the Lanarkshire side looking to continue their decent form in the run-up to the league finalé.
