    Head Groundsman Paul Matthew departs

    Head Groundsman Paul Matthew departs

After eight years, head groundsman Paul Matthew is leaving the club.

Prior to his arrival in May 2015, Fir Park had a reputation for a poor playing surface.

Matthew has led a revolutionary turnaround of the Fir Park turf which, in 2017/18 season, seen it voted as the best playing surface in the Scottish top league.

Year after year, Matthew and his team worked tirelessly through the summer months, ensuring we had a pitch that would survive a gruelling 10-month season, with an ever growing fixture list.

Also in his tenure, Motherwell became only the fourth Scottish Premiership club to have a hybrid pitch installed, which seen the pitch rebuilt from the ground up.

In doing so, drainage was improved, whilst the famous Fir Park slope was also lessened.

Alan Carlin will now make the step up to head groundsman immediately, having worked as deputy head groundsman at the club for the last two years and has 17 years worth of experience at Rangers.

“First off, I want to thank Paul,” Alan Carlin said.

“He has been a pleasure to work with and I am proud of what we have achieved together.

“I’m honoured to be given the trust and responsibility of head groundsman. There has been a high standard created here and I will do my upmost to maintain that standard.”

The club wants to thank Paul for his outstanding contribution in his time here and wishes him the very best in his future career.

    Craig Brown (1940-2023)

    Craig Brown (1940-2023)

We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former manager Craig Brown.

In the winter of 2009, Craig Brown was named as manager of Motherwell, with Archie Knox as his right hand man.

Manager of the Scotland national team, Clyde and Preston North End prior to his arrival, Brown arrived following the departure of Jim Gannon and was tasked with guiding the side for the rest of the campaign, with the Steelmen clinging on to sixth place in the table.

Appointed on 28 December 2009, Brown would immediately sign John Ruddy on loan, alongside last-minute hero, Lukas Jutkiewicz in the winter window.

Brown would go on to win back-to-back manager of the month awards in January and February, his first two full months in charge.

In his time at Motherwell, Brown orchestrated an inspirational comeback against Hibernian in May, when Motherwell found themselves 4-1 and 6-2 down during the 90 minutes.

The game would re-write the record books and finished 6-6 thanks to some last minute heroics from Jutkiewicz.

Brown and Motherwell would travel to Ibrox in their last game of the 2009/10 season, where once again, his side showed immense levels of character to produce another comeback at Ibrox against Rangers. Finding themselves 3-1 down, Motherwell fought back to 3-3 to end Brown’s first campaign in charge of the club on a positive note, although they would miss out on European football, finishing in fifth place in the table.

As a result, Craig Brown guided Motherwell back to the European stage.

Brown and Knox would take Motherwell on a true European adventure that summer, beating Breiðablik of Iceland, Aalesund of Norway and would face Odense of Denmark in the playoff round.

Many moments were created for ‘Well fans, including Tom Hateley last minute free-kick in Denmark, that will live long in the memory of every supporter.

Having guided Motherwell to Hampden and the semi-finals of the League Cup, Brown departed the club in December 2010, bolstering an impressive 46.86% win record in his time at Fir Park.

An icon and influential figure of Scottish football, Brown will forever be remembered for his astonishing achievements within the game and likeable character on and off the pitch. He will be missed by everyone.

The thoughts and condolences of everyone at Motherwell Football Club are with Craig’s family and close friends at this very sad time.

    Celebrating Tommy McLean

    Celebrating Tommy McLean

We officially celebrated the naming of the Tommy McLean Stand during the final cinch Premiership match of the season against Dundee United on Sunday.

New signage was unveiled as players and staff who worked closely with McLean gathered to mark the significant contribution the former manager made to the Lanarkshire outfit.

Chris McCart and Iain Ferguson of the 1991 Scottish Cup winning side, and Brian Martin, Alex Burns and Bobby Russell, joined former coach Cammy Murray on the pitch to mark the occasion.

Well Society chairman Douglas Dickie handed over a framed photograph of the Tommy McLean Stand to Murray, who worked alongside McLean as part of his coaching staff, and who represented him on Sunday at Fir Park.

“Tommy made a tremendous contribution to the history of Motherwell Football Club,” Cammy Murray said.

“He deserves to have his name in the fabric of Fir Park, alongside other great figures in the club’s history. He couldn’t be here in person, but I know he is humbled at this gesture.

“Tommy really is one of a kind. As a coach and being involved with him, I never came across anyone with the knowledge he had. He had this great ability to change things in the game and he gave the fans a decade they’ll never forget.”

Steve Kirk hailed McLean as the “best coach and manager” he’d ever worked under.

Well Society members voted to rename the South Stand after McLean in 2021, the same year he was inducted into the club’s Hall of Fame.

It wasn’t just his tactical genius and man-management that was top notch. He was financially astute as well, acting as a club director alongside his managerial role, and bringing outstanding players like Davie Cooper to Fir Park.

“Tommy brokered the record deal for Phil O’Donnell which allowed the club, at that time, to go forward with the stadium’s South Stand – and it’s absolutely apt that now it’s named in tribute to him,” Douglas Dickie said.

“I am delighted that the club, and the fans, were able to celebrate his impact together at the weekend. We will share pictures and footage from the day with Tommy, to remind him how much he means to the club.

“Tommy is one of the most important figures in the club’s 137-year existence and certainly the most influential in our recent history.”

McLean’s first feat as manager was to steer the Steelman safely back to top-flight football in 1985.

He helped steady the club financially and, over his 10-year tenure, brought in a mix of youth and experience which delivered the Scottish Cup in 1991 and the club’s first venture in European football.

Formers players, fans and club representatives pay tribute to Tommy in this short video.
