Teaming up with Mind to Mind

Teaming up with Mind to Mind

We are proud to announce our partnership with the Scottish Government’s mental health campaign Mind to Mind, an initiative encouraging individuals to look after their mental wellbeing.

Hosted on NHS Inform, the website, found here, offers a library of over 30 bitesize videos featuring individuals sharing their own mental wellbeing challenges, covering a wide spectrum of topics, including managing anxiety and panic, addressing financial worries, stress management, elevating mood, and navigating grief.

These stories aim to help other people who may be going through something similar. Contributors offer practical advice drawn from their own experiences and additionally the website provides clear signposts to direct individuals toward further help and support.

“Our mental wellbeing, like other aspects of health and fitness, is something we need to think about regularly,” Dr Alastair Cook Scottish Government’s Principal Medical Officer for Mental Health said.

“There are lots of things we can do to improve our mental wellbeing, whether it’s doing things that make you happy, making lifestyle changes, moving more, connecting with others or making time to get out in the fresh air. If you’re finding things difficult, it’s important to remember support is available.”

“Mental health is something that we talk about far more openly and frequently now,” club captain Paul McGinn said.

“Being open and honest about how you’re feeling is not a sign of weakness. It’s so important that we talk to each other about how we’re feeling. It’s great that there are accessible tools available online for people to go on and read about.

“We all go through difficulties on a daily basis, and that isn’t something we should be ashamed of. Hopefully this initiative will support people who need that helping hand.”

As a club, we’re encouraging all of our supporters to take care of their mental wellbeing by visiting the website with all the details here.

Motherwell FC Community Trust Player Development Pathway

Motherwell FC Community Trust Player Development Pathway

Providing opportunities is vital for player development, and we are delighted to provide our ‘Talent Development Pathway.’

The pathway from grassroots to academy football involves a structured journey consisting of several key stages and factors that each contribute to the development of aspiring young players.

The pathway is essential for identifying, challenging and nurturing talent, ensuring that players receive the necessary support and training.

Motherwell FC Community Trust are providing an opportunity for grassroot players, who are looking to progress their development towards a professional sporting environment, by offering a unique session, whereby like-minded players can collectively come together to enhance their footballing ability. Players will be challenged, with the session providing an opportunity to reach their full potential.

The session, forged in partnership with Motherwell FC Boys’ and Girls’ Academies to establish a pathway for developing talent to increase player development within the game, is aimed at players who are playing at INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED levels of grassroots football, and will provide a structured approach similar to academy focused sessions.

To sign up for the session, a ‘Class For Kids’ account will be required. Please see the link attached for more details on creating an account.

The official sign-up date for the ‘Player Development Pathway’ will commence on Monday 3rd February at 5PM. The four-week block will cost £24.

    Stuart Kettlewell resigns

    Stuart Kettlewell resigns

Motherwell Football Club can confirm the Club Board of Directors have very reluctantly accepted the resignation of Stuart Kettlewell today.

Stuart approached Chief Executive Brian Caldwell on Monday morning to explain why he wished to resign.

Stuart explained that some of the personal abuse was now affecting his family, to the point where they didn’t wish to attend games.

As a result, he felt it would be best if he tendered his resignation.

Since being appointed manager in February 2023, Stuart has managed 92 games overall, boasting a win percentage of 41.3%, the highest of any Motherwell manager since Stuart McCall.

He guided Motherwell to safety, narrowly missing out on top-six football in his first three months in charge, collecting 30 points out of a possible 42.

The good form ran into 2023/24, when Motherwell went ten league games without defeat, the longest run since 2010, and again, narrowly missed out on top-six football.

This season, he guided the club back to Hampden for the first time in six years in the Premier Sports Cup and has the team sitting fifth in the league currently.

All of this was achieved despite the sale of a number of key players for substantial transfer fees.

“It’s really sad that Stuart felt that the time was right to move on,” Chief Executive Brian Caldwell said.

“He had an exceptional record and has generated an impressive amount of transfer income for the club.

“He has been a critical factor in the development of Motherwell Academy Graduates, as well as developing young loan players during his tenure.

“When Stuart approached me, I was very disappointed to learn the effect this was having on his family and how he was feeling. No Manager, player, or club employee, every one of whom gives their all for the club, should feel this way.

“We therefore had no option but to reluctantly accept his resignation in the best interests of Stuart and his family. As a fan-owned, community-driven football club, we will always look after our own.”

The club wishes to thank Stuart for his hard work and total dedication during his time at the club. We wish him and his family all the very best for the future.

Assistant Manager Stephen Frail will take charge of the team for Sunday’s match, assisted by Jon Obika, Richard Foster, and the backroom staff.

The club will make no further comment at this time.

    Remembering Andy Thomson

    Remembering Andy Thomson

It was on this day in 1998 that Motherwell Youth player Andy Thomson sadly passed away at the age of 19.

Below is a extract appeared in the club programme dated 16 December 1998 for the game against Dundee.

At the Church Service, Jim Griffin delivered the following Eulogy:

“I had the privilege of working with Andy for a number of years.

Andy, like myself, a local lad, was delighted and proud to be a player at Motherwell Football Club.

During his apprenticeship, Andy showed a natural enthusiasm and willingness to learn, always very helpful, reliable, diligent in every task he performed, both on and off the field, thus making him the uniquely talented person he was.

Andy was liked by everyone, aptly described as “a loud in your face character”, who had a bizarre sense of humour. It’s this humorous side of Andy that I would like to touch upon.

One day while polishing the match boots of one of the senior pros, the player commented to Andy that his boots looked good but he would like to see his face in them.

Andy, slightly stunned, promptly disappeared to correct the situation.

Shortly afterwards Andy returned to the unsuspecting Pro and said – “This is as good as it gets.”

The player looked at his boots only to see a photograph of himself stuck on either boot! That was Andy. Always, laughing, joking, enjoying himself.

None of us could have been prepared for Andy’s tragic death, and of course, we will find the sudden loss very difficult to deal with.

None more so than his parents, Alex and Mary, and his girlfriend, Natalie. May you all take great comfort from the listening ears and comforting arms offered by those close to you at this traumatic time and in the times ahead.”
