Motherwell were held by neighbours Hamilton Academical in a bounce game on Saturday.

Liam Donnelly and Ricki Lamie netted headers from Liam Polworth corners but, despite having the bulk of the chances, were unable to claim victory.

The hosts started the brighter and had the early chances.

Hastie’s pass into the area from the right found Polworth, who twisted away from his man and went down calling for a penalty.

With nothing given, the ball fell to Campbell whose low side-footed effort was straight at goalkeeper Fulton.

Close to the half hour mark, the visitors could have taken the lead. Ross Callachan snuck in behind the defence to latch onto a pass from the left side, and foudn himself one-on-one with Carson.

With the goal at his mercy, his shot from 15 yards brought out a stunning reflex stop from the ‘keeper.

Straight up the other end, David Turnbull thought he was sure to score after Long played him in on the penalty spot.

But Accies’ trialist defender got across him in the nick of time to stick a toe in and divert the ball away as he was set to pull the trigger.

With five minutes left in the half, Motherwell took the lead.

Polworth’s delivery from the left was to the front post, where Donnelly had steamed across the front of his man to head in to the left side of the net.

Just minutes later, Accies would ensure they’d go in at the break level.

Scott McMann found room down the left on the overlap and shot low across Carson, finding the bottom right corner at a tight angle.

O’Hara and Watt replaced Turnbull and Donnelly at the interval as Motherwell again started brighter. But they found themselves behind in the 57th minute.

McMann’s ball from the left was met by the run of substitute Marios Ogkmpoe, who managed to loop his header over Carson into the right side of the net.

Motherwell continued to press, with sub Sherwin Seedorf eager to impress with a number of efforts from a lively outing on the right side.

The Steelmen’s leveller would come with 20 minutes to go. Another Polworth corner from the left found the run of Lamie, who got between the defenders to power a header home.

There would be further half chances for Stephen Robinson’s side through Seedorf and Watt, but the fourth test of pre-season would end level.

A 0-0 draw was the result in the last competitive clash between the pair, with Motherwell passing up late chances to take a derby win away from home.

Accies won on their last visit to Fir Park in December 2019, but Stephen Robinson’s side have won three and drawn two of the last six encounters.

Motherwell were defeated 4-0 at Ibrox on Wednesday night against a Rangers side who had come off the back of wins in France against Lyon and Nice.

Before that, a 3-2 home defeat to Kilmarnock came after a 1-0 victory against Dundee United.

Hamilton beat St Mirren 2-1 in a home friendly last weekend, with David Moyo and Lewis Smith on target.

Both of these factors were out of the ordinary and we are confident things will be smoother for our first home league match against Dundee United.

Stephen Robinson reacts to the friendly loss to Rangers.

Motherwell succumbed to a 4-0 loss at Rangers in their sternest pre-season test so far.

First half strikes from Ryan Kent, Ianis Hagi and Joe Aribo had the hosts comfortable at the break, before a Ricki Lamie own goal sealed the result in the second period.

Rangers immediately set the tempo and, after Long had gone close from the edge of the box with a shot which went past the left post, Steven Gerrard’s went ahead after seven minutes.

An attempted headed clearance only fell as far as Kent 20 yards out, who took a touch before sending a rasping shot into the bottom left corner of the net.

Three minutes later, it was 2-0.

Barisic found room down the left and stood up a perfect cross to the back post, where Hagi was on hand to nod home from close range.

Liam Polworth stung the palms of goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin as the Steelmen tried to get a foot back in the game, but they struggled against a dominant home side.

The clearest chance of the first half for the visitors came late on. A precise kick from Trevor Carson played in Jake Hastie down the right hand side. His drive into the middle saw him slip in Jordan White one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

However, as the summer striker looked to pull the trigger from close in, he was flagged for offside.

On the stroke of half-time, Rangers made it three.

Aribo found plenty time in the box despite the sea of claret and amber around him, dancing through and interchanging passes before hitting home from eight yards.

Turnbull, Gallagher and Hylton were introduced at the break as Stephen Robinson tried to provoke a response from his team.

Motherwell did improve in the second half, seeing more of the ball and creating chances. First, Donnelly saw himself through between the centre backs but had to pull the trigger from the edge of the box, with his shot going straight at McLaughlin.

Turnbull then brought out a brilliant reaction stop from the goalkeeper soon after from point-blank range, with Hastie and Turnbull against unable to take up chances to bury the rebound.

Both sides’ substitutions disrupted the flow of the game but the fourth would come. Barker’s burst down the left got him into the area to send an inviting ball aross the face of goal, which Lamie couldn’t stop himself from diverting into his own net.

In all, an important pre-season test for Motherwell to show what they are up against, with more valuable minutes under their belts ahead of the start of the Scottish Premiership campaign.

Kick-off in our friendly match at Rangers has been moved to 8pm.

The game will still be broadcast on Premier Sports in the UK, and to our season ticket holders and international viewers through our live streaming service.

As things stand, both clubs are waiting for the outcome of some of their Covid-19 tests but have been told that we will receive them prior to kick off.

Until that changes, season ticket holders can watch a live stream of all of our league games at Fir Park.

Plus, we’re trying out the service by giving season ticket holders free access to watch our friendly at Rangers on Wednesday 22 July.

Rangers have won the last four competitive outings between the two sides. Before that, two draws at Fir Park had given Motherwell a degree of parity.

The Steelmen’s last victory at Ibrox came in the Premiership play-offs in May 2015, with a 3-1 win coming courtesy of goals from Lee Erwin, Steven McManus and Lionel Ainsworth.
