Fee agreed with Celtic for David Turnbull

Fee agreed with Celtic for David Turnbull

Motherwell Football Club has reached an agreement with Celtic FC for the potential transfer of David Turnbull.

The academy graduate has been given permission to speak to the club. Should the deal go through, the value of the transfer will vastly exceed our previous record fee received.

We have rejected several seven-figure offers for David in recent weeks, with clubs the length and breadth of the UK speaking to us about him. It is clear from that the fee we stand to receive fully maximises his potential value.

We have continued to stand by what we believe is a fair value for David. In light of the negotiating stance we have adopted, the money we stand to receive will be transformational for us as we continue to operate as a fan-owned club.

Motherwell FC will make no further comment at this time.

Seven new academy graduates sign on

Seven players will make the step up from the Motherwell academy to sign professional terms at the club.

Sam Muir, Matthew McDonald, Cammy Williamson, Findlay Cook, Paul Hale, Lewis Robertson and Matty Connolly have all agreed to turn pro, having risen through the ranks.

All seven will now form part of Maurice Ross’ reserve group for the 2019/20 season, as well as being under the tutelage of new Under 18s coach Darren O’Dea.

Three defenders are part of the new crop and all are 16 years old. Sam Muir is a left back or left-sided centre back, Matthew McDonald is a right back and Cammy Williamson plays at left back.

The trio have been at the academy for a prolonged period of time, rising through the ranks from the ages of 11 and 12.

Paul Hale and Lewis Robertson are two young midfielders. Paul Hale, who has been at the academy for six years, is a central midfielder while Lewis Robertson, recruited from Rangers, plays as an attacking midfielder.

Seventeen-year-old Findlay Cook has been in the academy for three-and-a-half years, with the forward also making the step up.

Finally, 16-year-old goalkeeper Matty Connolly signs professional terms having already had a brief taste of being around the first team.

The youngster, who has been at Motherwell since he was seven years old, was involved in the warm ups at the home match with St Mirren in May, after the team went down to one registered ‘keeper through illness and injury.

“We are excited by what the seven boys will offer the club now they are on professional terms,” Motherwell’s academy director Steven Hammell said.

“The boys all have inspiration to look towards when it comes to how quickly their careers can progress.

“It’s up to them now to continue to learn and develop, and we’re hopeful they all have the attitude to give themselves every chance of a long career in the game.”

Last year’s crop have already made significant strides in their professional careers.

Dean Cornelius made his first team debut at the end of the 2018/19 season, while Stuart McKinstry and Reece McAlear were involved in some matchday squads.

    Christopher Long signs for Motherwell

    Christopher Long signs for Motherwell

Christopher Long is the latest Motherwell recruit ahead of the 2019/20 season.

The English forward has signed an initial one-year deal and will officially join on the expiry of his contract with Blackpool this month.

Long, 24, is a product of the Everton youth academy and has experience in the English Championship and League One.

“We’ve been keen to add players in the forward positions and Chris will bring another element to our attack,” manager Stephen Robinson said of his sixth signing of the summer.

“He’s got pace to burn, has an incredible work rate and can play anywhere across the front three, which will give us plenty of variety going forward.”

Liverpudlian Long spent time on loan with MK Dons and Brentford while on the books at Everton, scoring four goals in 11 games with the latter in the second tier.

An appearance in the UEFA Europa League came with the Toffees in 2014, getting on the pitch against FC Krasnodar in a game which also saw former ‘Well players Russell Griffiths and Conor Grant on the bench.

A permanent move to then-Championship side Burnley followed in 2015, before further loan spells at Fleetwood Town, Northampton Town and Bolton Wanderers.

After three years at Turf Moor, he signed at Fleetwood Town at the start of last season, before switching to Blackpool in January.

“I can’t wait to get started,” Long said on signing for the club.

“I’ve seen a number of my ex-team mates and players I’ve come up against join the club in the past and become a success. I’m hoping to follow in their footsteps.”

What if you could have a second place to call home?

    Habit.

Many of you have been coming to Fir Park for many, many years. Some of you have been with us for a while. Others might just be starting their love affair with the club, or you might be bringing along your next generation to get them hooked on the ‘Well.

We all have the things we do on matchday. Call them habits or, for most, superstitions. The same routine. The same breakfast. Wearing the same top if we won the week before. Take the steps up to the stand two at a time. The same seat for years on end. Don’t leave that seat for any reason until the half-time or full-time whistle goes. And so on.

You’ll have your habits. Whatever they are, let’s keep them going into the 2019/20 season.

Over 2,500 Motherwell fans have already decided to keep their traditions going for the forthcoming campaign. We had 4,300 commit to a season ticket for 2018/19 – and we want to try and surpass that record-breaking number again this year.
