Paul Brownlie’s side comfortably swept aside visitors Queens Park in a convincing display at K-Park on Sunday evening. 

The women of steel extended their advantage over closest-rivals Partick Thistle into the final top-six place in the ScottishPower Women’s Premier League table after racking up six goals, including a hat-trick from midfielder Louisa Boyes to complete a commanding performance in East Kilbride.

“It was a strong performance,” Head Coach Paul Brownlie said.

“First-half especially, we were really dominant in the game. It was the best I’ve seen us in spells in terms of how we moved the ball with a real tempo.

“The variation in goals was really good. It goes back to the players, in terms of them taking on information. We did a lot of analysis after the game against Thistle, we knew there were areas that we needed to get better, and the goals today is testament to them.”

Louisa Boyes completed her second hat-trick of November, finding the target across both halves after netting three-times against Aberdeen at Balmoral Stadium over a fortnight ago.

“[Louisa] shows incredible energy in the game,” Brownlie added.

“It’s the speed in the transition at points is something we’ve worked really hard on, and Louisa is really important in that.

“I think you could see that with some of her runs to attack the box. She has came a long way in a really short period of time.”

The women of steel face a short break before their next competitive game, as Laura Berry and Mason Clark both travel with the Scotland Under-19 squad.

“Two of the girls are away with the Scotland 19s,” Brownlie said.

“It will givee the opportunity for the rest of the players to get a break, where they’ll work on their individual programmes. We understand we’ll have a difficult run of games, with Rossvale in the cup and Rangers in the league, but we’ll take it one game at a time.”

Motherwell cruised to a momentous action-packed victory under the lights, as the women of steel dismantled a dejected Queens Park side to secure three points at K-Park on Sunday. 

Louisa Boyes netted a sensational hat-trick to mark her second of November, with midfielder Mason Clark also converting her first Motherwell goal. Bailley Collins returned to the scoresheet, as second-half substitute Sarah Gibb rounded off a clinical display with a close-range finish within the final stages of the game.

Head Coach Paul Brownlie named two changes to the starting XI that were held by closet-rivals Partick thistle last weekend. Skipper Gill Inglis took a place on the bench, as defender Jo Addie returned to the Motherwell backline. Mason Clark also returned to the matchday line-up, replacing Rachel Todd in midfield. A unforeseen injury in the warm-up forced Brownlie into reversing his first team sheet change, with Addie having to drop out of the matchday squad, with Inglis returning to the starting XI.

Poised to capitalise on their recently squandered attacking opportunities, the women of steel started firmly on the front foot, and quickly found themselves on the scoresheet. A clever interchange of play  enabled Boyes to skilfully evade her marker, before locating space at the edge of the Spiders penalty area, and the midfielder comfortably slotted a composed side-footed finish into the bottom-left corner.

Motherwell relentless high-press continued to frustrate the visiting backline, with the women of steel doubling their advantage moments later. A disorganised defensive clearance fell fortuitously to the feet of Mason Clark, who composed herself with a left-footed first-touch before dispatching an unpredictable right-footed half-volley into the top-right corner after first colliding with the far-post.

The Queens Park defence relented, gifting Motherwell possession deep into their final third, with Collins capitalising and soon coasting Motherwell into a commanding three-goal first-half advantage. A expertly manoeuvred set-piece routine mirrored the midweek efforts on the training-ground , as Gill Inglis picked put Collins in acres of space around 30-yards from goal, and Collins’ direction-shifting strike wrong-footed the Spider shot-stopper before nesting comfortably into the back of the visiting net.

Confidently retaining a three-goal cushion as the second-half resumed, Brownlie’s side calmly picked up from where they left off, picking up their fourth of the afternoon. Boyes skilfully worked her way through the Queens Park backline before finding herself directly through on goal, with the midfielder cushioning a curling right-footed attempt into the top-right corner.

Emma Craig pulled one back for the visitors against the run of play, drilling an exceptional strike from distance into the top-right corner of the Motherwell net.

The women of steel responded less than 10-minutes later, with Boyes completing her second hat-trick in November, finding the target from a few yards out.

Motherwell sealed the three points with almost the final kick off the ball, with Gibb back on the scoresheet, with an unmissable finish from close-range. the women of steel move three points clear of Partick Thistle in the final top-six place.

Manager Stuart Kettlewell was disappointed with the outcome of today’s match against Ross County. 

“As I’ve said to the players in that dressing room, I’m frustrated with today’s game,” Stuart Kettlewell said.

“I feel sorry for the Motherwell fans who managed to get to the ground today when the game panned out the way it did. There was little quality on show; the nature of the game was something supporters couldn’t enjoy.

“We were comfortable enough in the first-half, fashioning one decent chance. But we knew the game would be tight, and once they got their two quick-fire goals, the game was always going to be scrappy.

“We have a late rally with Zach’s goal, but it was a six-minute check. With the way today was, all the drama pre-match, you just want a little momentum in your favour. We did what we had to to get that, but it’s killed with the VAR check.

“There aren’t any excuses with travel or weather. We should have been better in the game. The game was stop-start, and there wasn’t a flow. But we have to handle those situations.

“We started to get ragged in the game; distances between players got bigger, and our setup was poor. That played into Ross County’s favour, we have to take that on the chin and ensure it’s better going forward.

“My most important message from this is I want to sincerely thank all supporters who braved the conditions today. Whether you made it to the stadium or had to turn back, that effort is not going unnoticed.

“Thank you to those who managed to get here and stuck by us. It was a total battle against the weather to achieve that, and I know it’s a long day for you as a result. I wish everyone a safe journey home.”

We have been in touch with Ross County this morning as soon as it became obvious that so many of our fans wouldn’t be able to attend due to extenuating circumstances with the weather in relation to refunds.

We are awaiting a response to clarify their position, and once we know this, we will advise our fans further. The club wants to thank all who braved the conditions today. We wish those currently travelling a safe trip home.

Ross County narrowly edged past Motherwell on Saturday afternoon in Dingwall, with second-half goals from Ronan Hale and Josh Nisbet helping their side towards a 2-1 win. 

Zach Robinson was able to get one back in the latter stages, but the Steelmen weren’t able to find the leveller thereafter.

Stuart Kettlewell made one change from the Steelmen’s last outing against St Johnstone, with Liam Gordon coming back into the side following his suspension to replace Tawanda Maswanhise, who only returned from international action on Friday.

With a limited Motherwell support after poor travelling conditions due to Storm Bert, a heart 100 or so Motherwell fans made the trip up the A9 and were treated to very little in the opening stages.

The first chance of the match came on 13 minutes, when Andy Halliday won a free kick on the edge of the box. Captain Lennon Miller stepped up, and although he got the ball up and over the wall, he was wide of the target.

Not long after, Tom Sparrow got in behind the County backline and was tripped 25 yards out. Apostolos Stamatelopoulos won the flick on from Halliday’s delivery, which just missed Steve Seddon in the box.

The Staggies had their first sighter of the afternoon on 22 mins when Ronan Hale took a shot early from 25 yards, but his effort was never troubling Aston Oxborough.

On 31 minutes came County’s best chance of the half. Noah Chilvers jinked away from two defenders and forced a strong stop from Oxborough, although there was a potential foul in the build-up.

Motherwell had their best opening on 42 minutes. Academy graduate Ewan Wilson showed supreme skill to turn and get away from two defenders; he interchanged with Miller before Tom Sparrow got the ball and fired a left-footed effort at Ross Laidlaw. The strike was saved by the County number one, and the half time whistle would follow shortly. 0-0.

With the deadlock yet to be broken, Ross County made an alteration at half time, introducing Campbell for Leak.

And a minute into the second period, the deadlock was broken. A shot from the edge of the area scraped the studs of Miller, and the ball subsequently fell to Ronan Hale. He managed to swivel and finish past Oxborough. 46 minutes, 1-0.

Miller looked to come straight back at County, but his audacious effort went sailing over the bar on 49 minutes.

On 53 minutes, County doubled their lead. Josh Nisbet managed to fortunately find the ball at his feet after it came off of Halliday on the edge of the area; he lashed the ball into the bottom corner to make it 2-0.

Both sides made changes at this stage, with Motherwell looking to find a way back into the game. Zach Robinson, Harry Paton, Tawanda Maswanhise, and Moses Ebiye were all introduced, but it was Robinson who would make the impact.

The number nine got on the end of a Miller free kick on 82 minutes, expertly heading with the back of his head past the keeper. However, any momentum gained from the goal was quickly killed with a five-minute VAR check for offside.

In the end, the goal was given, but the Staggies went on to kill off the rest of the game, including the ten-minute stoppage time.

Goalkeeper Matty Connelly has returned to Motherwell, with the club exercising the option of an emergency short term recall from East Kilbride. 

For clarity, this is not a permanent recall and the goalkeeper will return to East Kilbride shortly.

Krisztián Hegyi misses out on today’s game against Ross County. The Hungarian has undergone a minor non-footballing related operation.

Connelly is available for selection immediately.

Thanks to Aldi in Hamilton, Motherwell Football Club Community Trust was able to donate 24 bunches of flowers to local care home Parksprings, in Motherwell, this afternoon. 

Captain Paul McGinn assisted the handover, spending some time with some of the carers at the home.

“It felt really rewarding to see their reaction,” McGinn said.

“It may just be some flowers to some people, but to the care home, it was greatly received. They said it would cheer up a number of residents, as well as the staff. Of course that makes you feel good.

“It’s a small gesture from us, but it’s one I think is hugely important, and I’m glad I was able to help. Sometimes you get embroiled in football and all the emotion of the sport, but when you take a step back and go into the local community to see some of the excellent work people do on a daily basis, it reminds you of how privileged we are.”

“Being at the heart of the community matters to the club,” Dawn Middleton CEO of the Motherwell Football Club Community Trust added.

“Some of the support and kindness we all witnessed during the pandemic has dwindled. We were delighted that support from Aldi Hamilton allowed us to visit with the flowers today.”

Midfielder made his return from injury prior to the international break against St Johnstone, and the Canadian international is now looking forward to the rest of the season and staying fit. 

He discusses what the team have taken from the recent defeat against Rangers in the semi-final and explains how that can be used as motivation.

Manager Stuart Kettlewell is looking forward to the uninterrupted run from now until March, as his team look to come back from this international break better than the previous one. 

Kettlewell provides an update on those recovering from injury, as well as answering questions on the reported interest for Lennon Miller.

The ideal candidates would have prior coaching experience and are working at UEFA C license level.

All roles within the girl’s academy are voluntary positions.
