Motherwell lost their second SWPL Cup group match against Aberdeen on Sunday.

Bayley Hutchison’s goal in the 20th minute was enough to secure all three points for the Dons.

Motherwell had the best chance of the opening period. Having won a free kick on the edge of the box, Chelsie Watson stepped up. However her effort went just wide.

Aberdeen then took the lead. Motherwell goalkeeper Khym Ramsay was closed down by Hutchison, who blocked the goalkeeper’s clearance and finished to make it 1-0 to the hosts.

Motherwell looked to bounce back straight away. Kaela McDonald-Nguah picked the ball up on the left wing and cut inside, only for her curling effort to come off the crossbar.

The ’Well continued to pile on the pressure. Claire Crosbie’s header at the back post went across the face of goal and was cleared, just before McDonald-Nguah was set to tap in from close range.

Crosbie caused the Aberdeen defence more problems just before half-time when her header was cleared off the line.

In the second half, Motherwell had most of the possession.

The biggest chance of the second half fell to captain Gill Inglis. Her strike inside the box was set to hit the back of the net but it was blocked by the Aberdeen defence.

Motherwell will look to bounce back on Wednesday night when they host Boroughmuir Thistle in their third group match in the SWPL Cup.

Liam Grimshaw netted a memorable first Motherwell goal as the Steelmen came from behind to win at Livingston.

The popular player starred in midfield and followed in Tony Watt’s saved shot to complete the comeback.

Watt himself had levelled the score early in the second half, after Alan Forrest’s first-half opener for the Lions.

Motherwell changed four from the team which started the Premier Sports Cup loss to Dundee.

Bevis Mugabi, Mark O’Hara, Justin Amaluzor and Watt came into the team. Barry Maguire and Liam Donnelly missed out with injury, with Stevie Lawless and Connor Shields dropping to the bench.

Motherwell almost had the dream start four minutes in.

A deep cross to the back post was headed back across by Amaluzor to Woolery. Crowded out at close range, he swung a boot and made a connection but saw his certain goal denied.

Obileye saw a goal disallowed for the hosts  but Motherwell were the team in the ascendancy in the opening stages, with Amaluzor causing plenty trouble down the right.

Watt felt he should have had a penalty in the 23rd minute when, surging into the area, he collided with his opponent but nothing was given by referee Napier.

Livingston though grew into things as the half wore on and made the breakthrough with 10 minutes left.

Moving the ball around on the edge of the area, Forrest managed to engineer space for himself 20 yards out and placed his shot perfectly into the bottom-right corner of the net.

Motherwell came flying out the blocks in the second half and were ahead within two minutes.

A short corner on the right saw O’Hara deliver into the area.

Ojala got up to nod the ball on to Watt, who headed home from close range off the left-hand post.

‘Well started to find their rhythm again, with Watt constantly dropping deep to cause trouble as they went in search of the lead.

Woolery had a golden chance just after the hour mark. Slipped in by the brilliant Grimshaw down the left, his placed shot back across goal was gathered by the goalkeeper.

The game started to open up. Forrest and Anderson were both denied late on the counter for the hosts, but it would be Motherwell who would get the next.

Watt did brilliantly to engineer space on the edge of the box and his low shot was parried out by the home goalkeeper.

Alive to the shot, Grimshaw raced in and stabbed home from close range to net his first in Motherwell colours.

He would then come to the rescue late on, denying Anderson from close range as he pulled the trigger, as the Steelmen held on for their first three points of the league season.

The Motherwell boss discusses trying to get the first league win on the board, and transfer dealings, ahead of the trip to West Lothian on Saturday.

Adam MacDonald, Lennon Miller and Bailey Rice have been called up to the Scotland Under 17s squad.

The Motherwell trio are in Brian McLaughlin’s selection for the national team’s double header of friendly against Wales in September.

MacDonald has already turned professional this summer at the club, with 14-year-old pair Miller and Rice both members of our academy.

Scotland face Wales on Thursday 2 September and then Sunday 5 September, both at Forthbank Stadium in Stirling.

The first match is open to the public, with the second behind closed doors.

The midfielder looks ahead to Livingston as he steps up his return to the squad.

‘Well are unbeaten in their last three encounters with Livingston.

Last time out, a 3-1 win at Fir Park in March came through a Devante Cole double and a further Christopher Long strike.

Motherwell were also victorious on their last trip to West Lothian, with goals from Callum Lang and Tony Watt sealing a 2-0 win.
