Louisa Boyes: It’s an absolute honour to represent my country

Dreams of adorning the famous dark blue strip or proudly wearing the lion rampant on your chest are amongst the most celebrated and cherished moments for any Scottish footballer.

A dream that deservedly became a reality for 24-year-old midfielder Louisa Boyes, who received her first-ever national team selection after being named in the 20-player shortlist for the Scotland under-23 squad.

Boyes joined fellow teammates Eilidh Austin and defender Jenna Penman on the flight to Spain, as the squad prepared to face Denmark and Portugal in a double-header of international friendlies.

“It’s an absolute honour,” Boyes said proudly.

“Being selected by your country is an absolute privilege and one I am certainly not taking for granted. My dream has always been to one day play for Scotland, and having not played at any previous international level, I wasn’t sure if that experience would ever come.

“It’s a really proud moment for my family, who were completely over the moon when I told them the news. Part of my decision to sign for Motherwell in 2023 was because of their strong record in developing young players, and giving them the platform to express themselves at a high level. This season alone, there have been nine of us in the Scotland team across under 17, 19, and 23 age categories.

“It’s really satisfying to see, as I know how hard they all work week to week, and I was absolutely delighted to join them.”

Boyes didn’t have to wait long for her first opportunity, as the versatile midfielder started in Scotland’s second game against Portugal, with Scotland emerging victorious after a penalty shootout following a goalless 90-minutes.

“It was a dream come true,” Boyes said excitedly.

“It was everything I’d imagined it would’ve been. You could instantly feel the standard and the tempo of playing at that level, but I felt I really grew into the game, and the squad were able to achieve a really positive result.

“I’m immensely proud to forever have that moment to look back on, and I’m hopeful that it’ll be the first of many to come in the future.”

The Bellshill-born central midfielder has continued to impress in claret and amber since lifting the 2023-24 Motherwell Women’s player of the year, scoring 12 in 24-appearances, surpassing her previous total of six in eight fewer appearances.

A stalwart of the Motherwell midfield, Boyes has yet to miss a single game this season, featuring on 25-occasions; starting in 24 of those. The number. 19 has played a vital role in Motherwell’s route to the National Stadium, netting in every round of the Scottish Cup against Rossvale, Bonnyrigg Rose and Boroughmuir Thistle, as Paul Brownlie’s side secured their Semi-Final place against Glasgow City later this month.

“It’s been a really strong season both personally and collectively as a team,” Boyes added.

“I set myself targets at the start of the season because I wanted to establish myself as a more consistent goal threat from midfield. After speaking to Paul at the start of the season, my position drifted forward, and I was able to play regularly in a more attacking area of the pitch. To surpass last season’s goal tally before the split had even started was a really proud feeling, especially having worked towards achieving those targets from the start of the season.

“To score and play my part in each round of our Scottish Cup campaign was really special. We’ve really wanted to get back to Hampden since our last Semi-Final in 2023, and we’ve had a perfect route to Hampden – netting 16-goals whilst keeping a clean sheet in all three games.

“For myself personally, having not featured in the previous Semi-Final against Rangers, I’m determined to perform to the highest standard in any game I’m called upon, and hopefully I’ll be able to play my part this time around.”

Motherwell will face their Semi-Final opponents in the SWPL when they return from the international break this weekend, and Boyes is keen for the squad to lay down a marker.

“It’ll be a great test for the full squad,” Boyes summarised.

“We have the capability to compete against the strongest teams in the league, and building up to the Semi-Final by facing these opponents in the country is the perfect preparation.

“We will head to Glasgow full of confidence that we can achieve a result, and hopefully lay down a marker for the Semi-Final at Hampden later this month.”

    Dan Casey ahead of Hearts

Defender Dan Casey has described Saturday’s game against Hearts as a ‘Cup Final’ for the players. The Irishman is excited for what is ahead and hope everyone turns up on the day.

Casey says there is frustration with the amount of wrong decisions the club have been involved in over the course of the season, however these decisions are in the past and now everyone has to remain fully focused on the opportunity to get into the top-six.

Motherwell will contest a Scottish Cup Semi-Final preview, as they travel to Glasgow to face opponents Glasgow City in the third post-split fixture of the 2024/25 SWPL campaign.

The women of steel will return from the international break, looking to build on their positive yet frustrating display against league leaders Hibernian over a fortnight ago.

Motherwell were defeated by three-goals to nil, but could leave East Kilbride encouraged by their competitive and closely-fought display.

    The Tale of the Tape

    Motherwell

Motherwell return to domestic action this weekend following a fortnight-long international break, with the women of steel keen to kickstart their top-six campaign after opening post-split defeats to Rangers and Hibernian.

Paul Brownlie’s side fought the league leaders closely at K-Park last month, but couldn’t capitalise on their attacking threat shown throughout the vast majority of the second-half.

Scotland internationals Mason Clark, Lucy Barclay, Brodie Greenwood, Eilidh Austin, Louisa Boyes and Jenna Penman will all return to action after representing the under-19s and 23s squad respectively.

    Glasgow City

Glasgow City remain firmly in the hunt to restore their place at the top of the SWPL, with the Springburn outfit sitting three-points behind league leaders Hibernian

    Women’s international review

We had six players away on international duty this month. Here’s how they got on.

    Mason Clark

Mason Clark represented the Scotland U19-squad in a triple-header of Euro Qualification matches, with the youngster totalling 89-minutes in a comfortable 4-0 victory against the Czech Republic at Broadwood last Wednesday, before adding another 65-minutes against Spain at the weekend. Clark started the final Group A5 match against Switzerland on Tuesday.

    Lucy Barclay

Defender Lucy Barclay was a double second-half substitute over both games against the Czech Republic and Spain. Barclay played a total of 38-minutes across both games, and supported the Scots 4-0 victory in Cumbernauld. Barclay then received her first start against Switzerland on Tuesday evening.

    Brodie Greenwood

Hearts loanee Brodie Greenwood played a vast majority of the U19s fixtures, receiving 65-minutes against Czech Republic before competing an additional 79-minutes against Spain the following weekend. Greenwood started alongside her teammates in the defeat to Switzerland.

    Eilidh Austin

Striker Eilidh Austin featured in both Scotland U23 fixtures, starting against Portugal in a 5-4 victory on penalties following a 0-0 draw after coming on as a second-half substitute in their opening friendly match with Denmark.

    Louisa Boyes

Midfielder Louisa Boyes made her first appearance in a Scotland jersey, earning her first cap in the National Team’s victory over Portugal after being named in the starting XI at the Pinatar Arena on Sunday.

    Jenna Penman

Defender Jenna Penman started alongside her Motherwell teammates in Sunday’s victory over the Portuguese, with the 22-year-old earning her second cap in the U23s squad.

Kofi Balmer red card appeal outcome

Kofi Balmer red card appeal outcome

We can confirm that Kofi Balmer’s red card has been rescinded, and the defender is available to face Hearts on Saturday.

The club are delighted that the correct decision has eventually been reached.

However, this doesn’t get away from the fact Motherwell played with ten men for over 75 minutes in an important fixture just prior to the split.

This is the second time this season the club has had to go through the time, effort and expenditure to appeal a red card decision.

We have concerns that VAR felt that this was an obvious refereeing error in the first place. Again, the on-field review has come out with the wrong outcome.

We spend a significant six-figure sum each season towards the running costs of VAR at the stadium. There have been eight instances so far this season where Motherwell have been directly impacted by what has subsequently been deemed an incorrect referee or VAR decision.

This was as recent as last week when a tackle on Andy Halliday went unpunished, and the SFA’s KMI panel viewed it as a unanimous red card.

These continued errors throughout the season, for all clubs, will have a direct impact on where teams will finish in the final standings, which obviously determines finances for each club.

We hope that with the financial commitment put on the club to use VAR, combined with the frustration our fans get from the game due to the intervention from VAR, we see significant improvement in its implementation going forward.

    Squad Update

There are no new injury concerns. We await to hear the outcome of Kofi Balmer’s appeal.

    Motherwell’s Fortunes

Motherwell have lost their last two games against Aberdeen and Kilmarnock. Kofi Balmer saw red just 25 minutes into the game at the weekend, which made it a difficult afternoon for the Steelmen.

Goals from Paul McGinn, Stephen O’Donnell and Tom Sparrow helped Motherwell on their way to a 3-1 win against Hearts earlier in the season at Fir Park. Hearts came away with the points at Tynecastle, thanks to a narrow 1-0 win.

    Opposition Report

Hearts also lost out last weekend, losing 1-0 to Dundee United at Tynecastle. James Wilson saw red in that match, so he will be unavailable for Saturday.

The Jambos have won two and lost three of their last five matches. Elton Kabangu has been a revelation for Neil Critchley’s side since joining in January, with the striker netting eight times and becoming Hearts’ top goalscorer.

    Permutations

Motherwell, Hearts and St Mirren can all finish in the top-six going into this weekend. Hearts are on 39 points, while St Mirren and Motherwell are on 38.

Motherwell can only finish in the top-six if they beat Hearts and results elsewhere go their way. A Motherwell win would only see the Steelmen move into sixth if St Mirren lose or draw against Ross County.

Hearts will claim their top-six spot if they beat Motherwell. They could also secure sixth if they draw at Fir Park and St Mirren fail to win.

A draw would not be enough for St Mirren to finish in the top-six. The Paisley side must beat Ross County and hope either Hearts don’t win or Motherwell don’t win by enough to swing the goal difference, which is currently at a difference of nine.

  • First team

It’s going down to the wire // Kilmarnock 2-0 Motherwell

Motherwell returned from Ayrshire empty-handed, having played over 70 minutes with ten men on the pitch. Shortly after Kilmarnock’s opener, Kofi Balmer was given his marching orders following contact on the follow-through with a Killie player.

From then on, the game was killed as a contest, with Derek McInnes’ side having large spells of possession. They doubled their lead seven minutes after the interval from a corner, which secured the win for the hosts.

However, with Hearts failing to register a win against Dundee United, the race for top-six will go down to the wire on Saturday, with Motherwell, Hearts and St Mirren all in contention.
