Welsh forward Jack Vale has re-joined the club for a second spell after agreeing a season-long loan deal from EFL Championship side Blackburn Rovers, subject to international clearance.

A product of the Blackburn Academy, the Welsh 23-year-old frontman joined Motherwell on deadline day in January, as the Steelmen sought to bolster their attacking options throughout the latter stages of the 2023/24 league campaign.

Vale instantly became a favourite amongst the Fir park faithful, netting twice over thirteen appearances whilst becoming a key component in a prolific partnership with striker Theo Bair.

“It’s a nice feeling to be back at Fir Park,” Vale explained.

“The time I spent here last season was really good, because I learnt so much in a short space of time.

“That was only from January onwards so I’m hoping with this move being for the season, I can accomplish more. There’s new faces but I know everyone around the place and some of the players from last time. It should be an easy transition and hopefully I can hit the ground running.

“I’ve been following all the results and everything about the club over the summer. It’s good to be back.”

Vale has made 27-senior appearances for Blackburn Rovers, with his debut coming in 2020, scoring two goals. Since leaving Fir Park following the conclusion of the 2023/24 season, Vale has continued to train with the first-team squad, making two appearances in the Carabao cup against Stockport County and Blackpool.

“Getting Jack back for another season is great,” Stuart Kettlewell reiterated.

“Everyone witnessed the impact he made last season. He has all the qualities to score goals at this level. We have been trying to get him back since the end of his previous loan deal, but Blackburn wanted to see his over the summer which is understandable.

“He’s in the building, he’s match fit and he’s ready to go.”

18-year-old Lennon Miller remains fully focused on his football on a Saturday, as he shuts out all the outside speculation about his future.

Miller discusses the team’s performance on Sunday against Hearts and how everyone is looking to follow that result up against St Johnstone this weekend.

Murron Cunningham has departed the club by mutual consent.

The experienced defender joined the women of steel in the summer of 2021 after earning the Hearts player of the year award during the previous season.

Cunningham’s time in claret and amber was almost immediately cut short after the then 23-year-old sustained a serious ACL injury during her first season at the club. A two-year rehabilitation process soon enabled Cunningham to return to action during the latter stages of the 2023/24 SWPL campaign.

Keen to return to regular competitive action, Murron informed the club of her decision to play elsewhere. We thank Murron for her efforts in ML1 and wish her well for the future.

Manager Stuart Kettlewell provides a transfer update ahead of the summer window closing tomorrow at 11pm. The Motherwell manager says nobody needs to leave the club and that the only planned departures would be for the younger plays going out on loan.

Krisztián Hegyi has been called up by Hungary’s Under 21s. 

The 21-year-old has 22 caps at Under 21 level and earned his first call up to the first-team in March.

Hungary take on Slovakia in a friendly match on Thursday 5 September and then face Spain in Euro Under 21 qualifying action.

The Hungarians are in the same group as Lennon Miller and Scotland’s Under 21 side.

After trading the City of Discovery for North Lanarkshire after three seasons at Foundation Park, former Dundee United and St. Johnstone captain Rachel Todd instantly made an impression in claret and amber, netting twice in her debut before adding to the tally the following weekend.

Already proving to be a shrewd acquisition, the versatile defender will be keen to play a part in the women of steel’s push for a top-six finish this season.

“It certainly was a debut to remember,” Todd noted.

“I couldn’t have imagined it going any better. I felt confident that I could score on my debut, but I didn’t expect to score twice. It’s ironic because I wasn’t feeling particularly great about my first half performance as I didn’t get on the ball as much as I wanted to. Then, in the second half, we picked up the performance and took control of the game.

“It’s not often I score with a header, so that certainly topped off the game for myself personally.”

Capable of operating between the back four and forward line, Todd primarily played on the left flank whilst featuring throughout the entirety of the Tangerines 2023/24 SWPL campaign.

Todd netted eight times across the previous campaign and captained the side to a closely-fought SWPL playoff victory over Kilmarnock to retain United’s Premier League status ahead of the forthcoming season.

“Paul had been in touch with me on numerous occasions and had made his interest clear during the previous season,” Todd outlined.

“Certain circumstances meant it wasn’t the right time for myself personally, but this season felt like it was time to move on and it’s been the best decision for me.

“Paul’s message was clear from the start, and I had a really good feeling for the move after discussing his aspirations for the season ahead. It felt quite a seamless fit for both of us, as the club could develop me as a player whilst also creating competition for places.”

Despite a tough SWPL campaign with United, Todd concluded her captaincy with a positive display over Kilmarnock through a one-legged playoff-final at the Falkirk Stadium. The 27-year-old will be keen to build on her experiences in Tangerine, as the women of steel target an historic top-six finish this season.

“Collectively as a squad, we know the ambition for the season is to finish in the top-six,” Todd emphasised.

“The quality within the changing is more than capable of achieving this, but we have to be consistent with our performances. I’m an attack-minded player, who can use my pace to threaten from wide positions whilst remaining strong, aggressive, and extremely competitive, so I hope to contribute to the team to the best of my ability.

Paul Brownlie’s side coasted to a comfortable five-goal victory over Spartans in the Scottish capital on the opening weekend before continuing their unbeaten start to the season, with a closely-fought victory over Montrose at K-Park.

“To start the season with three points was the best possible outcome,” Todd said.

“The manner of the victory though, scoring five-times is an encouraging sign and an early indication of what the squad is capable of. To follow that up with another strong performance over Montrose should be a signal of our ambitions for the season ahead.⁠

“There’s been a lot of new faces in the summer window, but there’s also a healthy mix with players who have been here for four or five seasons. The feeling around the dressing room is brilliant, in training everyone is motivating each other and pushing each other’s standards. It’s a really good environment.”

Lennon Miller has been named in the Scotland Under 21 squad.

Scotland have two matches in September, taking on Spain and Malta in Under 21 Euro qualifiers.

They face off against Spain on Friday 6 September, before travelling to Malta on Tuesday 10 September.

With six matches played so far, Scotland are in a good position. They are currently in second place on 13 points, three points behind leaders Spain.

Malta are bottom of the group and are yet to pick up a point.
