Marvin Kaleta has joined the club on loan from Wolves, subject to international clearance. 

The 19-year-old right-back has arrived in North Lanarkshire for the rest of the season.

Kaleta came through at Manchester City before joining Wolves in 2020. A prominent feature for their Under 18s and Under 21s, he has gathered plenty minutes of action in the Premier League 2 and Under 18 Premier League.

“With the injuries we have sustained to this point, we thought it was important to bring Marvin in,” manager Stuart Kettlewell said.

“But when seeking a new face, you don’t want to recruit just for another number. We need the quality and character to be correct.

“With Marvin, I feel like we’re getting a young player who has raw ability and room for growth. He has played plenty minutes down in England so we feel this is a good move for him.

“We’ve seen previously with the likes of James Furlong and Georgie Gent, that these loan moves can be a platform for the player to succeed. We’ll be in constant contact with Wolves to keep them informed of Marvin’s progression.”

Kaleta will wear the number 21 jersey.

“The manager told me about how good this loan move could be for my development,” Marvin Kaleta added.

“At this stage in my career, I want to learn and progress. I feel I can do that most by playing first-team football here at Motherwell.

“I’m looking forward to seeing all the fan, who I’m told are great with the players. It’s good the team got off to a good start on Saturday and hopefully we can continue that going forward.”

Stuart Kettlewell was pleased his side got the three points on Saturday against Edinburgh City, but insists his team must go up to the next level if they are beat Montrose on Tuesday night. 

The manager drilled home his admiration for Montrose who “punch above their weight” and Kettlewell reckons the task could be trickier than normal.

Theo Bair’s move away from Motherwell is discussed with Kettlewell confirming the transfer has moved to an advanced stage, whilst the appointment of Paul McGinn as captain and Stephen O’Donnell as his vice.

Our match against Rangers on Saturday 10 August will take place at Hampden Park. 

Kick off remains at 3pm.

The change comes as a result of stadium work that is ongoing at Ibrox.

Motherwell play their first away game in Group G of the Premier Sports Cup on Tuesday night, travelling to Links Park to face Montrose.

Kick off is 7.45pm.

The Steelmen made a winning start to their Premier Sports Cup campaign, defeating Edinburgh City 3-0 on Saturday at Fir Park.

It was the defenders who got in on the action, with Kofi Balmer, Dan Casey and Stephen O’Donnell all getting on the scoresheet.

That, with results elsewhere, mean Motherwell are top of the group heading into match day two.

Opposition Report

Montrose only narrowly lost out against Partick Thistle in Glasgow on Saturday. The Jags eventually came away with a 3-2 win, despite an impressive display from Montrose.

Hermiston and Maciver-Redwood both got on the scoresheet as the The Gable Endies look for their first win of the campaign.

Paul McGinn is the new captain of Motherwell Football Club.

Stephen O’Donnell is the new vice-captain.

McGinn, who joined in the summer of 2022, has racked up 80 appearances for the club and has been a consistent name and performer in the team.

Making his 500th club appearance last season, McGinn brings a wealth of experience and leadership to the table.

O’Donnell also played his 500th club game last season. The Scotland internationalist signed a new contract in the summer and has been a consistent performer under Stuart Kettlewell.

“Between the two players, they have played over 1000 games of football,” manager Stuart Kettlewell said.

“That to me is an example for younger players. Liam Kelly was an excellent captain and he was as a vocal leader. Paul is a voice and a big influence in the dressing room.

“The consistency and standards he drives everyday is impressive. I always think a captain needs to have an affinity with the group, he has that. A captain can’t just be in name, you need to have serious influence.

“In the end, this was an easy decision to make given the experience and voice both players have in the team.”

Motherwell made a winning start to their Premier Sports Cup campaign on Saturday afternoon at Fir Park, beating Edinburgh City 3-0. 

A first-half header from Kofi Balmer seen Motherwell with a narrow advantage at the halfway stage, but goals from Dan Casey and Stephen O’Donnell in the second-half seen the points stay in North Lanarkshire.

Stuart Kettlewell handed debuts to Balmer and Krisztian Hegyi, with academy graduate Dylan Wells also handed his first start.

With 4000 home fans in the stands for the first competitive game of the season, Motherwell controlled much of the possession in the early exchanges.

Moses Ebiye’s tame header on target was the only real save City keeper Mark Weir had to make in the first ten minutes.

Centre-back Balmer drove into the space in front of him and had a go from 25-yards out but his driven strike was just wide of the post.

Five minutes later, it was Balmer involved again. An inch perfect delivery from corner taker Andy Halliday found Balmer in the box, the Northern Irishman connected perfectly with the ball but he couldn’t beat the post.

It was on 43 minutes that the Steelmen did eventually break Edinburgh City down. A small case of Deja Vu, Halliday delivered and once again found Balmer who this time made no mistake and got the opener. 1-0.

The second-half started in similar fashion with Motherwell controlling the play. Harry Paton had a sighter from outside the area but his effort was well over the bar.

On 50 minutes, good work from Wells won the ‘Well a corner that created yet another opportunity. Halliday found Balmer, who headed back across goal and Casey’s subsequent header rattled off the crossbar.

Just four minutes later however, Casey would find the back of the net. Another corner caused all sorts of problems for the visitors, the Irish defender jumped highest at the back post and headed down into the bottom corner. 2-0 and it looked like the points would be safe.

On 61 minutes, the win was confirmed. Good work from Ewan Wilson up the left hand side got his team from the halfway line to the edge of the box, the young full-back played it across to Stephen O’Donnell whose drilled effort couldn’t be kept out by Weir and it was 3-0. A collectors item for the Scottish internationalist.

Further chances would be created for Motherwell. Substitute and debutant Zach Robinson looked bright. He set up Ebiye with a threaded through ball but the Nigerian’s effort was saved.

Robinson created an opportunity for himself also, holding off Edin Lynch before shooting over the bar.

Another opportunity was created from a corner, with Casey denied his second of the afternoon by the post.

With Partick Thistle beating Montrose 3-2 in the other match in Group G, Motherwell go top in the early stages of this years Premier Sports Cup.

The life of a footballer is one of consistently training at least four times a week, a match at the weekend, very few days off and a series of high and low emotions.

So, when the end of the season arrives, it’s imperative that they make the most of some time off. Defender Dan Casey did that as the Irish centre-back jetted off to Portugal days after the final game of the season against St Johnstone.

Holidays with his girlfriend, friends and family all in the space of a few weeks meant it was a busy but enjoyable summer. In 2024, and in the world of Sports Science, a summer schedule has changed for the professional footballer. Gone are the days of consistent nights out and blowing up in size.

It’s now about enjoying the thrills of life but with a taste of fitness alongside.

“We didn’t get a lot of time off,” Dan Casey laughed.

“But we got enough to just relax and refresh. It’s a long and stressful season, with lots of highs and lows along the way so you have to re-charge the batteries.

“You get two weeks to relax and let the body recover but then you’re straight back into it.

“We got told before we left that there was a standard expected for when we returned and that we had a time that we had to make for the pre-season running tests.

“There’s no hiding place. If you don’t do the work, you’re going to get left behind. Credit to everyone, we all came back and did well. Everyone made the time.”

The first day of pre-season is well documented. A day of no footballs and intense testing.

But it’s what sets the precedent for the rest of the season, a base line for the coaching staff to work with. And despite the time in the sun, Casey was rather pleased with how he came back.

“When I came back, I felt good,” Casey stated.

“There was room for improvement, of course there was, but the starting point was good and I think that showed quite early on.

“We had one or two injuries but they’re more football related. It was a tough first week but we got through it together. I made the requested testing time by five seconds. That’ll do me.

“Long distance running isn’t for big men like me, it’s for the skinny midfielders!”

The initial slog of testing can make or break your season. And to get through it, everyone needs to stick together and encourage each other. That’s why it makes the perfect opportunity for all the new boys to embed themselves in their new dressing room.

It’s been a busy start to summer business, with Stuart Kettlewell bringing nine new faces into the team. Once upon a time, Dan Casey was in that position. Stepping off the plane from America as he arrived in North Lanarkshire for the first time.

That was over 18 months ago and as a result, the 26-year-old is one of the more experienced faces in the dressing room.

“I’ve played over 200 games now,” he said.

“I love being here, the people are brilliant and the longer you’re here, the more you get to know the people around the club.

“Now that I’ve been here a while, I need to help the new lads. I know what it’s like coming in as a new boy and it can be hard and daunting at first.

“With the team spirit we have, it’s easy for new players. We just hope they can get comfortable as quickly as possible as that’ll show on the pitch going forward.

“I’ve been impressed with the new signings. It’s been a big turnaround in players and that comes with it’s own challenges. But going away has made that easier, spending so much time in each other’s company. You get familiar with everyone very quickly.

“There’s been a few who are confident, everyone will see soon enough who the loud ones are, I’ll not ruin the surprise.”

But as Motherwell rounded off their pre-season schedule with a 4-2 win over Linlithgow Rose, the focus quickly turned to the competitive action in the Premier Sports Cup. In his first season at Fir Park, Stuart Kettlewell made it clear how much he wanted to win the group and that mentality has remained for this time round.

That approach trickles down to the players and Casey is looking forward to getting started.

“We have things to work on but every team has that at this stage,” Casey added.

“We’re going in the right direction, everyone has bought into what the gaffer and the coaching staff are trying to implement. Edinburgh City are going to be up for it, it’s a competitive fixture so we can’t not be up for it.

“We want a professional approach and performance, a winning start and hopefully we can kick on for the remainder of the group. “There’s a target on your back for being in the top division, all these teams are good and can punish you.

“We won’t let that happen and are focused on not getting distracted or carried away. It’s up to us.”

That target on the back has been a driving factor in Casey’s continuous drive for improvement. The work in the off-season will stand him in good stead but now he just wants to do the talking on the pitch.

“I’m excited to get going, I’m yet to find a player who enjoys pre-season,” he laughed.

“I just want a good season for the team. Everyone has ambitions and my biggest one is, as a team, can we push on from last year?

“You always want to better your previous season, so if I can improve and the team can improve, I’ll be happy. You don’t want to get caught up in the games ahead. That’s when focus can slip on the task at hand. I’ll take everything that comes my way and fingers crossed we can have a good year.”
