The Lanarkshire derby back is back at the forefront of the domestic calendar, with the women of steel facing a highly-anticipated trip across the River Clyde in the first post-split fixture against local rivals Hamilton at New Douglas Park.

The return to SWPL action after a two-week hiatus follows an exceptional  victory over Spartans in the Scottish capital, with Motherwell firing four past the Edinburgh side to narrow the gap to Aberdeen in seventh.

With preparations underway, the expectations have been set for the squad, with the meeting in ML3 the first step in preserving the visitors SWPL status.

The Tale of the Tape

Motherwell

Paul Brownlie’s side coasted into the post-split with ease after securing a hard-fought but deserving three points in a momentum-building league victory over Spartans at Ainslie Park.

Jo Addie got the women of steel off the mark inside the opening 10-minutes, with midfielder Louisa Boyes marking her return to the starting XI with a clinically-taken brace. Striker Morgan Cross also prodded home a close-range effort  in a comfortable four-goal cushion and assured performance over the nearest league rivals.

Striker Laura Berry will be unavailable, with the forward currently on international duty with Scotland in a triple-header of U17 Euro qualification matches against Denmark, Poland and North Macedonia.

Hamilton

After defeating the women of Steel at New Douglas Park in February, the Accies have picked up one point in the SWPL since, with a 92^nd-minute Spartans equaliser denying Accies their first back-to-back victories this season.

Hamilton then travelled to Links Park to face league rivals Montrose, but despite being held to a stalemate at the break, the Gable Endies resurged late on to secure a comfortable seven-goal victory.

Davor Zdravkovski has been named in the North Macedonia squad for the first time since September.  

The midfielder has been absent in the October and November squad but makes his return off the back off his game time in recent months.

Since being subbed on at half time against Ross County at the start of December, Zdravkovski has been named in the starting 11 for the last 16 matches.

Zdravkovski is yet to make his debut for his country.

North Macedonia are travelling to Turkey for a warm weather camp, where they will play two matches in their time there.

They face Moldova on Friday 22 March before a match against Montenegro on Monday 25 March.

Callum Slattery, Harry Paton and Barry Maguire remain missing for this match.

Andy Halliday made his return to action against Rangers at Ibrox. Calum Butcher missed that match and will be assessed this week.

Jon Obika has picked up an injury and will also be assessed.

Motherwell’s Fortunes

Motherwell had a free weekend having been knocked out the Scottish Cup.

That meant it’ll be two weeks since their last competitive match some Saturday. The Steelmen have won their last two matches. Going behind at Livingston, Blair Spittal, Sam Nicholson and Jack Vale scored to turn the game in the favour of the ‘Well.

Stuart Kettlewell’s side beat Rangers at Ibrox for the first time since 1997 in their last match, with Theo Bair scoring his 11th of the season and Dan Casey also getting on the scoresheet.

The result leaves Motherwell two points off of the top-six, prior to the midweek action. They are a point behind Dundee in seventh, with four goals to go until the split.

Last time out, Motherwell got themselves into an ideal situation at Pittodrie, finding themselves 3-0 up in the first half thanks to a double from Theo Bair and a first professional goal from Adam Devine. The Dons fought back to 3-3, with Harry Paton having a winning goal ruled out after a VAR check.

Opposition Report

It’s been an eventful time at Aberdeen. Interim manager Neil Warnock departed the club, having guided the Dons to the semi final of the Scottish Cup last weekend against Kilmarnock.

Warnock departs after 33 days spent in the Granite City. Their last win in the league came in Dingwall at the start of January.

Aberdeen are in tenth place, five points behind Motherwell. Bojan Miovski has had another successful season in front of goal, with the North Macedonian on 22 goals.

Jamie McGrath has 38 appearances in his first season for the club, he has nine goals and two assists in that time with his most recent strike coming against Kilmarnock at the weekend, as well as an assist.

Theo Bair has earned his spot back in the Canada squad. 

With 11 goals to his name this season, the striker has been in scintillating form for the Steelmen. In his last ten games, Bair has nine goals and three assists.

Bair has two senior international appearances to his name, scoring on his debut for his country. His last appearance came back in 2020 against Iceland.

Canada are in CONCAF Nations League playoff action, as they face Trinidad and Tobago on Saturday 23 March.

Liam Kelly has been included in the Scotland squad. 

The final squad before EURO 2024, Scotland have two friendly matches in preparation for their tournament in Germany.

Kelly made his Scotland bow in Paris back in October, as he played the first 45 minutes against France.

Scotland travel to The Netherlands on Friday 22 March, before Northern Ireland are the visitors to Hampden Park.

Bevis Mugabi has been called up by Uganda for two Friendly matches in March.

The Cranes take on Comoros and Ghana and will be based in Morocco as they ramp up their preparations for their World Cup Qualifiers in June.

A poor goalscoring record in Scotland meant supporters questioned Theo Bair’s arrival in August.

One goal in 34 games for fellow Premiership side St Johnstone didn’t fill Motherwell fans with confidence or belief that Bair was up to the task of replacing 29 goal man Kevin van Veen.

Fast forward seven months, everything has changed. Spending time with the analysis department, watching some of the best strikers on the planet, has seen him soar to new heights.

Taking bits from strikers like Victor Boniface and Benjamin Šeško, has seen his goal record improve drastically and he has firmly became one of the most important, and exciting, players in the Motherwell squad.

Blair Spittal has won February’s cinch Premiership player of the month award. 

The midfielder, who has also won the club’s player of the month award, becomes only the third Motherwell player in five years to win the accolade.

“It’s been a much more positive month for the team,” Blair Spittal said.

“That is always the main thing but obviously, it’s nice to be personally recognised.

“I’ve been loving my football and think the system has really worked for me. We don’t want to stop here, the manager has been big on that.

“We want to use the momentum we’ve built up in the remaining games. There’s a lot of football still to be played and we want finish strongly.”

Blair Spittal has been named our G4 Claims player of the month for February. 

Scooping the award for the first time since his arrival in 2022, Spittal had an electrifying month on the pitch.

Although missing his first match of the season against Hearts at Tynecastle, he kicked off the month by finding a on-rushing Theo Bair as he levelled the game against Kilmarnock.

He then found the back of the net in the first half against Ross County, cutting into the box and lashing in off the post.

He then scored a goal of the season worthy strike from 25 yards, curling a beauty into the top corner in the second-half, before rounding off his a rampant display by setting up Jack Vale to make it 5-0.

Spittal opened the scoring against Celtic with a sublime strike from the edge of the box to beat Joe Hart and then, four days later, struck another goal of the season contender against Livingston, when his volley flashed into the top corner.

Three assists and four goals in total for February, a worthy winner of our player of the month.
