Steven Hammell was pleased with his side’s 0-2 win over Arbroath in the Scottish Cup.

“It was a test of our character and attitude coming here but we done what we came here to do which is progress to the next round.”

Motherwell progressed to the fifth round of the Scottish Cup with a 0-2 win against Arbroath.

Mikael Mandron scored a double on his first start for the club, with a goal in the first half and another right at the final whistle.

The manager handed a debut to Shane Blaney, who replaced Sondre Solholm in the middle of the defence, as well giving Kevin van Veen a well earned rest.

The home side made life difficult on a tricky surface but the Steelmen found the breakthrough midway through the first half.

A perfectly weighted pass from Spittal found McKinstry who unselfishly squared it to Mandron for an easy finish into the net.

From there Liam Kelly was rarely troubled and Motherwell were pushing for a second. Nice play between Crankshaw and McKinstry set up Mandron but Gill came off his line quickly and made the save.

The Arbroath ‘keeper was called into action again moments later, this time thwarting Stuart McKinstry from twelve yards.

Steven Hammell brought on Kevin Van Veen and Dean Cornelius and both had decent chances to double the lead but neither could find the target.

With seconds left on the clock Mandron grabbed his second, poking in Goss’ cross and settling any potential nerves and saw Motherwell into the hat for the draw for the next round which will take place on Sunday, January 22 at 6pm.

He may only be 16-years-old, but Lennon Miller has achieved a lot in the early days of his footballing career.

Training with first team players at 13 has accelerated his progress and prepared in him from an early age.

Despite losing his mum at a young age, Miller has went from stride to stride impressing scouts, coaches and fans alike, promising to himself that he would do his mum proud.

As soon as he was eligible, Steven Hammell introduced him to first-team training and put him straight into matchday squad.

Making his professional debut against Inverness CT in August 2022, making him the youngest Motherwell player ever, Miller has since went on to make his league debut at Ibrox against Rangers.

Scoring from the halfway on his international debut for Scotland, which subsequently won him ‘Scotland’s 2021 goal of the year’, he went on to represent his country at the Under 17s Euros despite only being 16.

One Motherwell certainly consider for the future, Lennon Miller is already well on his way to becoming a top player.

Motherwell travel to cinch Championship side Arbroath in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup and manager Steven Hammell says the mentality has to be spot on should Motherwell want to progress.

In a game where Motherwell are labelled favourites, Hammell is wary of the quality Arbroath have within their ranks and doesn’t want to see any cup upsets.

Goalkeeper Matty Connelly has joined Stranraer on loan for the rest of the season. 

The 19-year-old joins up with the League Two side for his third loan move at Motherwell.

Stranraer’s first choice goalkeeper is currently injured, allowing Connelly to get minutes on the park.

“Matty has shown terrific quality since I arrived at the club,” head of goalkeeping Neil Alexander said.

“He trains with the first-team every day so I feel now is a good opportunity for him to show what he has been learning on the training pitch, into regular first-team matches.

“He is someone I think highly of and look forward to monitoring his progress.”

He may only have arrived seven days ago, but Mikael Mandron is ready to get cracking in a Motherwell shirt.

The striker arrived from Gillingham a week ago and wants to make an impact from the get go, starting against Arbroath in the Scottish Cup.

After their valiant point against one half of the old firm on Wednesday, Motherwell take on the half on Sunday when they take on Rangers. 

Kick off is 4pm at K-Park.

Story of the match

Motherwell recorded an impressive point against Celtic midweek, after defeat to Hibernian the previous weekend.

It’s been a decent run of form for the women of steel, who have recorded two wins and two draws in their last five matches.

Rangers are currently third in the league, recording no losses thus far.

Their last defeat came in the Champions League against Benfica, however the Gers did draw a blank last Sunday when they drew 0-0 with Hearts at the Oriam.
