It was a week of more minutes and more development for our loan boys.

Max Johnston

It was another start for Max Johnston at Cove Rangers. The full back continued his development on loan with the Championship side as they took on Inverness Caledonian Thistle at the Balmoral Stadium.

Although Cove were narrowly defeated 1-0, Johnston played another full 90 minutes in the match.

David Devine

David Devine was once again at the heart of the Alloa defence on Saturday, as the Wasps took on Airdrie.

The defender kept a clean sheet as they bounced back from last weekends defeat, with a comfortable 2-0 win. Devine played the full match.

Robbie Mahon

Dunfermline moved top of the league one table with a 1-0 win over FC Edinburgh.

Robbie Mahon was an unused sub.

Daniel Hunter

Daniel Hunter kept his place in the Cumbernauld Colts midfield when they took on Spartans on Saturday.

The midfielder played 85 minutes, with Colts falling to a 3-0 defeat.

Scott Fox

Queen of the South were in action midweek as they took on Kelty Hearts.

Fox was between the posts however narrowly lost 1-0 on the road to Kelty. The goalkeeper wasn’t involved in their match on Saturday.

Ewan Wilson

It was two full games in the space of three days for Ewan Wilson at Albion Rovers.

Albion were defeated 1-0 on Wednesday night up north against Elgin, with Wilson solidifying his space at left full back.

Rovers would improve come the weekend, when they ended Dumbarton’s winning run to start the season, with a 1-1 draw.

Logan Dunachie

It was South Challenge cup action for East Kilbride, when they took on Lanark United.

Kilby would comfortably advance to the next round with a 5-1 win, Dunachie played the last ten minutes of the match coming off the bench.

An emphatic second-half comeback saw Motherwell overturn a two-goal deficit to earn a point on a frustrating but rewarding return to SWPL action at K-Park.

Two perfect penalties from Kaela McDonald-Nguah cancelled out first-half strikes from Rebecca Galbraith and Katherine Smart to complete a thrilling afternoon in East Kilbride.

Paul Brownlie made three changes from the side the cruised past Dundee United in the Sky Sports Cup over a fortnight ago. Lori Gardner and Katie Rice both returned to the starting XI, with Kodie Hay and Brogan Anderson having to settle for a place on the bench. Carla Boyce also returned to action following London Pollard’s midweek departure from the club.

Looking to continue their positive run of form, Motherwell tried to impose themselves from the off, with Lori Gardner testing the Spartans goalkeeper in the opening few minutes.

Latching onto Katie Rice’s through ball, Gardner darted across the face of goal before shifting the ball onto her right foot, but the forwards ambitious effort failed to trouble Alicia Yates.

Emily Mutch was forced into making a superb reaction save moments later. Smart’s floated delivery fell kindly to Tegan Reynolds at the edge of the penalty area, but Mutch reacted brilliant to parry the midfielders effort around the post.

Seconds after keeping her side in the game, it was a moment to forget for the Motherwell shot stopper. Mutch looked to have gathered Galbraith’s deceptive low shot, but the ball somehow slipped through her grasp before nestling into the back of the net.

As the half-time whistle loomed, the visitors netted their second of the game. Marshall’s pinpoint free-kick caught the static Motherwell defence off-guard, and Smart raced through to convert at the front-post.

Trying to find a route back into the game, Motherwell came close to pulling one back on the hour mark. Second half substitute Jemma Hughes pickpocketed Sarah Clelland deep into her own half before driving towards goal, but the striker couldn’t apply the finishing touches as her strike fell agonisingly over the crossbar.

With 20-minutes left to play, the hosts pulled one back. Lucy Ronald was bundled over in the box leaving the referee no alternative, but to award the penalty kick. McDonald-Nguah stepped up and confidently placed her effort past Yates.

Motherwell continued to flood the Spartans penalty area in search of a vital equaliser, and their efforts were rewarded 10 minutes from time. Nicola Jameison was caught wrong side of Lauren Doran-Barr in the box, and the referee soon awarded Motherwell their second spot kick.

McDonald-Nguah stepped up again and coolly sent Yates the wrong way to seal an excellent second half response from the women of steel.

Paul Brownlie’s side will now turn their attention to the Sky Sports Cup, as they face league leaders Rangers in the Quarter-finals on Sunday.

Motherwell suffered a narrow 1-2 defeat against Rangers at Fir Park on Sunday.

Stuart McKinstry’s first goal in claret and amber wasn’t enough to stage a comeback after Malik Tillman and John Lundstram gave the visitors a two-goal lead.

Steven Hammell went into the game with a depleted squad, with Joe Efford, Louis Moult, Blair Spittal and Connor Shields missing from last weekend’s defeat to Hibernian. Into the starting line-up came Ross Tierney, Josh Morris and Stuart McKinstry.

Tillman and Kent had early chances but the Motherwell defence soaked up the pressure and looked comfortable enough, with neither goalkeeper having much to do.

Motherwell came out in the second half and had a big chance to take the lead.  Sean Goss played in van Veen but on his weaker foot, he failed to steer the ball into the corner, leaving McGregor with a comfortable stop.

Two minutes later the visitors were 0-1 up.

Tillman picked up the ball just inside his own half and was not dealt with by the Motherwell defence. One drop of the shoulder and he found himself through on goal, cooly dispatching past Kelly.

Having defended so well up to that pont, that was a frustrating one for Steven Hammell.

From there the Steelmen looked well organised but still failed to trouble McGregor.

John Lundstram added a second in the 70th minute. His header from a corner was deflected past Kelly.

With ten minutes to go, McKinstry gave Motherwell a life-line.

Josh Morris won a free-kick on the left wing and the on-loan midfielder curled his cross/shot over the head of McGregor.

The goal re-energised the Fir Park faithful but it proved to be too little too late for Steven Hammell’s men, who now face Celtic mid-week in the Premier Sports Cup.

Steven Hammell says everyone will need play their part if Motherwell are to get a result against Rangers in the cinch Premiership.

Despite a heavy defeat in the Champions League midweek, the managers knows this will play no part in how Motherwell prepare ahead of a tough challenge.

It doesn’t get much harder in the cinch Premiership than having to play Rangers, says goalkeeper Liam Kelly.

The shot stopper says the team believe in each other but they will all have to be at their best to get anything out of the game.

Motherwell return from the international break this weekend when they take on Spartans in SWPL. 

Kick off is 4pm at K-Park on Sunday 16 October.

It will be pay-at-the-gate only for the game.

Tickets for adults cost £8, with kids and concession tickets costing £3. There will be cash and card turnstiles.

Story of the match

Motherwell’s last game was against Dundee United in the SWPL Cup, with the women of steel advancing to the next round with a 2-1 victory.

Spartans are unbeaten in their last three SWPL matches. In their last outing, they defeated Hearts in the SWPL Cup on penalties.

Motherwell won two of the three encounters against Spartans last season, drawing the third.

London Pollard has left Motherwell with her registration being terminated.

The striker joined the club in November 2021 and has made seven appearances this season.

The club wish London all the best for the future.

We are back on home turf for the first time in a month when Rangers visit Fir Park.

The story of the match

Motherwell will be looking to bounce back from defeat to Hibs last weekend.  The Steelmen finished with ten men and probably deserved more from the game.

Sunday’s opponents Rangers have won their last three league games, including two 4-0 victories.

Steven Hammell’s men will be looking to end a dismal home record against Rangers with the last league win coming in 2002.
