The Story of the Match

The Steelmen will be looking to follow up on a fine win against Aberdeen last weekend.

Steven Hammell’s men are searching for their first home win of the season, having lost with the last kick of the ball last time out.

Livi have started the season strongly,  with five wins from seven games across the League and Premier Sports Cup.

They will go into Saturday’s game off the back of a good win at home against Hibernian.

Important Information

• Please note there will no cash turnstiles on the day of the game. The ticket office will be open for sales to home fans. An away ticket booth is in operation at the Tommy McLean Stand for away fans.
• Concession prices apply to those aged 60 and over and full-time students with a valid matriculation card.
• Young adults are 12 to 17 year olds and Juniors are for children aged 11 and under.

In his first match since being named as permanent Motherwell manager, Steven Hammell took his side north to Aberdeen in the cinch Premiership.

After a quick start and creating numerous chances, Blair Spittal broke the deadlock for Motherwell as they looked to upset the odds. Aberdeen would score on either side of half time to turn the game on its head and test Motherwell’s character.

Callum Slattery’s excellent movement in the box was enough to deceive the Aberdeen backline as he levelled the game on 52 minutes.

Motherwell’s day got even better when Kevin van Veen was on hand to nod home the ‘Well’s third not long after the equaliser.

After passing up more opportunities to score, the Steelmen came away with all three points and got Steven Hammell’s tenure as Motherwell manager, off to the best possible start.

Despite a dominant and resilient Motherwell performance, Glasgow City netted late into stoppage time to clinch a narrow 0-1 victory at K-Park.

Hayley Lauder’s strike with the final kick of the game was enough to ensure victory for the visitors.

Following last weekend’s tumultuous 1-1 draw with Dundee United, Paul Brownlie made two changes from the previous outing. Kaela McDonald-Nguah and Kodie Hay both dropped out whilst Lori Gardner and London Pollard returned to the starting 11.

Motherwell pressed high from the off, frustrating the visiting defence who looked to build from the back.

Katie Rice tested the Glasgow goalkeeper in the opening few minutes. The midfielder did well to shift the ball onto her left foot before firing a drilled effort towards the bottom left corner, but the keeper reacted well to easily gather.

Motherwell continued to frustrate the visitors and almost netted the opener minutes later. London Pollard reacted brilliantly to anticipate Megan Foley’s misplaced header before racing through on goal, but Meikayla Moore’s late lunging tackle was enough to divert her powerful effort wide of the target.

Motherwell were certainly the likelier of the two sides to find the opener as the half time whistle neared. Lori Gardner skilfully worked her way past several lacklustre challenges before teeing up Pollard at the edge of the box, but the forwards curling effort was easily matched by the keeper.

Despite Motherwell’s admirable display, Glasgow came close to snatching the opening goal in the final few moments of the first half. Lauren Davidson’s low-driven cross sailed invitingly into the path of Kinga Kozak yards from goal, but Jo Addie’s last-ditch tackle ensured both sides were level at the break.

As the second half resumed, the women of steel picked up from where they left off. Excellent link-up play between Gill Inglis and Carla Boyce left the captain in acres of space before picking out summer signing Lucy Ronald at the edge of the box, but her dipping effort sailed agonisingly over the bar.

Minutes later, Pollard was left through on goal after latching onto Lori Gardner’s perfectly weighted through ball, but the striker couldn’t capitalise despite rounding the keeper.

As the final few seconds ticked away, the visitors netted a decisive winner. Hayley Lauder’s floated corner kick was powered high into the roof of the net by Jenna Clark in what was a heart-breaking moment for the women of steel.

Steven Hammell kicked off his reign as permanent manager with a 3-2 win over Aberdeen at Pittodrie.

Blair Spittal, Callum Slattery and Kevin van Veen all netted in an eventful win up North.

PRE-MATCH

Hammell brought Callum Slattery back into the side following suspension. Dean Cornelius also got his first league start as the pair replaced Maguire and Morris.

The goals

• ‘Well took the lead. midway through the first half thanks to Blair Spittal. Connor Shields was played in down the right and he fired in a fine ball across goal. Spittal was on hand to apply the finish past Roos from close.
• As the break approached Aberdeen got level though Miovski who powered his header past Kelly
• After going behind two minutes into the second half though Hayes, it might have been easy for heads to go down. Thankfully five minutes after the Dons scored, Slattery put ‘Well back level. Goss’ corner went all the way through the box and found Callum Slattery who had an easy finish at the back post.
• Incredibly, three minutes later, the comeback was complete. Blair Spittal went in search of his second and saw his show rattle off the crossbar. Thankfully van Veen was lurking and fired the ball into the empty net.

Talking points

• Aberdeen passed up a great chance to take the lead after 11 minutes. Ramadani burst clear through on goal and looked certain to score but scooped his effort over the bar.
• Motherwell had a host of great chances to add to their tally but couldn’t make them count.
• Four wins in last five games at Pittodrie for the Steelmen.

Goalkeeper Aston Oxborough has joined Motherwell on a two-year deal. 

The 24-year-old shot stopper joins the club after 14 years at Norwich.

6’4″ Oxborough signed under previous manager Graham Alexander, with international clearance finally being granted, and goes straight into the squad against Aberdeen as Scott Fox is temporarily filling in as goalkeeper coach.

Aston was on loan last season at National League side Barnet where he turned out 22 times for The Bees.

“This is a really good club full of good people,” Oxborough said.

“I’m excited to be here and I’m looking forward to the season ahead.”
