The home side have been in good form, with two losses in their last eight games, both at the hands of league leaders Celtic.

Motherwell suffered a dent to their European hopes, starting their post-split fixtures with defeats to Rangers and Dundee United.

Tale of the tape

County currently sit a point above the Steelmen in the cinch Premiership.

A win for Motherwell would push them into fifth place, which would be a European spot for next season, with two games left to play.

Motherwell were narrowly beaten 2-1 by  Rangers on Sunday in a game where they were unlucky not to get any points. 

Goals from Kirsten Reilly and Lizzie Arnott for Rangers secured all three points for the visitors, while Katie Rice scored a screamer to get ‘Well back in the game.

Motherwell were looking for a similar performance to the one against Rangers last month, where they were narrowly beaten 0-1 but Rangers started on the front foot on this occasion. 

After four minutes, Amy Anderson lost the ball in the middle of the park and Reilly nicked in to claim possession before rifling a low stinging effort into the bottom corner past Ciara Duff. 

Rangers had most of the possession in the first half as they looked to add to their advantage. 

A resilient Motherwell backline managed to keep the Rangers attackers quiet for large portions of the first half. Reilly was looking for her brace and on 39 minutes, unleashed an effort from 25 yards out which came crashing off the crossbar. 

Just a minute later, on 40 minutes, Sam Kerr was looking to get on the scoresheet when she got on the end of Brogan Hay’s cross but her header was comfortably saved by Duff.

Rangers however did get their second of the match. Demi Vance burst down the left hand side before drilling a low cross which found Arnott in space, she took a touch and placed an effort into the top corner.

Motherwell had plenty to work to do to get back into the game and came out and put a sensational second half performance in. 

After a flurry of set pieces for the side, Motherwell were awarded a free kick 35 yards out. Rice stepped up and fired a remarkable left foot strike towards goal which landed in the top corner to half the deficit. 1-2 Rangers. 

Motherwell limited Rangers to many chances in the second half, with Kerr coming closest on 69 minutes with a shot from the edge of the box which was saved by Duff.

Controversy would strike the match on 71 minutes when Kaela McDonald-Nguah got on the end of a long ball. The ball bounced in the Rangers penalty area as keeper Jenna Fife came off her line and misjudged the bounce. She held onto McDonald-Nguah to prevent the striker from an easy finish but the referee seen nothing wrong and no penalty was awarded.

Motherwell continued to push and came close once again on 82 minutes. A Rice delivery from a corner caused all sorts of problems from Rangers and Chelsie Watson directed an effort towards goal which was deflected and struck the crossbar.

Despite continued pressure from the home side, Rangers hung on to take the win and continue their unbeaten run.

Motherwell had plenty chances but lost ground in the race for Europe as Dundee United ran out 1-0 winners.

Kaiyne Woolery came in up top for Joe Efford, with Mark O’Hara taking Dean Cornelius’ place in midfield in two changes from the side which lost to Rangers last time out.

Both sides went into the Tannadice fixture with aspirations of claiming a UEFA Europa Conference League place and both were on the front foot from the off.

While United had most of the early ball, it was Motherwell who arguably should have been out of sight within 20 minutes

Ten minutes in, a United corner found its way into Kelly’s hands. The goalkeeper saw the determined sprint forward of Tierney and the long kick went over the United defence and got the Irish youngster in behind.

Taken slightly wide, Tierney drove towards goal and saw the space open on Siegrist’s left side, but saw hit shot agonisingly bounce clear off the post.

Another golden chance would follow 10 minutes later.

A swift Motherwell attack saw Tierney hacked down on the edge of the box but the advantage was played as Woolery gathered.

The forward took a touch to set himself, before firing a rocket towards goal which smashed off the crossbar and away.

Motherwell continued with wave after wave of attack, with United leading a charmed life as they got in the way of a number of final balls which looked set to gift further opportunities to the visitors.

As has too often been the case in recent months, however, the sucker punch wasn’t far away.

Eight minutes from the interval, Levitt started a good and quick interchange on the edge of the area and, via Watt and McNulty, the ball was returned to him in the middle.

His shot took a wicked deflection off the grounded Goss, catching Kelly by surprise and looping over him into the net.

Motherwell kept at it, with Tierney and Woolery in particular looking dangerous, but a shot at a leveller just wouldn’t fall before the interval.

Woolery’s pace was a persistent danger and that endeavour produced the first chance of the half early on.

Siegrist was panicked enough to rush out of his area to try and intervene as Woolery chased down the loose ball and his clearance fell to Tierney 30 yards out.

The United goalkeeper scrambled back and as Tierney looked to chip him, he couldn’t get the elevation on the shot and Siegrist could gather.

Motherwell continued to flood forward and a tactical change with 25 minutes to go saw the team shift to a 4-2-3-1 shape, with Ojala replaced by Efford and O’Hara moving to right back.

Mugabi was then sent up top for the last 10 as Alexander went all out for the game-changing moment.

It came agonisingly close with eight minutes left. Slattery’s free-kick from the left met Lamie in the area, but the defender could only steer his header wide.

Tierney saw a header from close range brilliantly saved by Siegrist with five minutes to go as Motherwell kept pressing and O’Hara would also head wide from another Slattery free-kick.

But the goal just wouldn’t come, with ‘Well leaving Tannadice empty handed.

Graham Alexander says all games with Dundee United this season have been highly competitive and expects the same again this time round.

The manager believes his side will be able to cope with the pressure of picking up enough points in the cinch Premiership to clinch a spot for Europe next season.

Sean Goss says despite a poor run of form since the turn of the year, the squad remain optimistic and have to remember how well they played to get into the top six before this tough run.

With four games left in the cinch Premiership, Goss is well aware it is the crunch time for the season.

Motherwell pair Lennon Miller and Bailey Rice have been called up by Scotland for the UEFA Under 17s European Championship finals.

Appearing in the tournament for the first time since 2017, the national team will take on Portugal, Denmark and Sweden in their group, having finished second in their qualification group.

Portugal lie in wait first on Tuesday 17 May at the Lod Municipal Stadium in Israel, before Denmark on Friday 20 May at the Ramat Gan Stadium

Sweden are the opponents in the final group game on Monday 23 May at the Lod Municipal Stadium.

Rangers have a 100% record against Motherwell this season. In their last encounter, Motherwell ran the title chasers very close as they were defeated 1-0.

Motherwell come into this game off the back of a 1-0 victory against Spartans in Edinburgh.

Chelsie Watson netted to give Motherwell their first win since January and closed the gap to Spartans and Aberdeen in the table.

With three games to go, Rangers are five points clear of Glasgow City in second place.

City are in cup semi final action this weekend so the Gers have the opportunity to go eight points clear of their rivals, with City having three games left to play.

Rangers last dropped points in the league back in October to Glasgow City.
