Annan Athletic visit Fir Park on Saturday in the final Premier Sports Cup group stage match.

Fans are again back in the ground, with up to 2,000 fans in attendance. Kick-off is at 3pm.

All tickets for the match have been allocated to season ticket holders.

Some fans have had issues adding their ticket to the wallet on their phones.

If this happens to you, please open the Print at Home document attached to your ticket email and have it open on your phone. We will be able to scan the barcode from that.

If you have a ticket and cannot make the match, please let us know ASAP by calling 01698 333333 or emailing tickets@motherwellfc.co.uk. This will allow us to potentially pass your ticket to a fan who missed out in the ballot.

Tale of the tape

The two sides have faced each other twice in recent years in this competition.

In 2016, a Louis Moult double and a strike from Marvin Johnson secured a 3-1 away win.

Then at Fir Park in 2019, Liam Donnelly scored twice – with Liam Polworth and James Scott netting the others – in a 4-0 victory.

Motherwell won their opening two group matches against Queen’s Park and Queen of the South, before defeat in the derby at Airdrie in midweek.

Annan gained two points in their opening match with Airdrie, before losing to Queen of the South and Queen’s Park.

Airdrie took all three points in the derby with a 2-0 win over Motherwell.

A ferociously contested affair was decided by Rhys McCabe’s 30-yard free-kick midway through the second half, and Scott McGill’s unstoppable second soon after.

In the blazing sun, both teams took time to settle with enthusiastic forays forward failing to trouble either keeper early on.

Kouider-Aissa headed over early on for the hosts, while Woolery was teed up well by Watt on the edge of the box but saw his shot blocked.

A Watt free-kick was sent over from 25 yards as the visitors took control, but the Diamonds were strong on the counter and O’Connor in particular had to be alert on several occasions to head away from close range.

Then with five minutes left in the half, the Irish defender had the golden chance of the game.

Maguire’s free-kick from the left found a sea of claret and amber jerseys unmarked at the back post and O’Connor got his head on it 10 yards out, only to head straight at the ‘keeper.

‘Well started the second half on the attack and should have had the lead in the first two minutes.

A ball into the box from O’Donnell went over the heads of everyone to meet the run of Lawless, who stooped low but couldn’t get a clean connection on his header and sent it wide.

Liam Kelly had to come to the rescue soon after. A long throw from the left found its way to the back post where Kerr was lurking unmarked.

Taking time to set himself, his fierce effort from 10 yards was bound for the top-right corner but the goalkeeper smartly got across to deny a certain goal.

Motherwell upped the intensity. A great surging run down the left from Woolery led to his near post shot being turned away by the feet of Currie.

But in the 67th minute, the game would swing in Airdrie’s favour.

A foul 30 yards out provided McCabe with the shooting chance and he took it, firing straight into the top-right corner of the net.

Motherwell tried to pile on the pressure and get balls into the box, with the introduction of Van Veen causing problems.

Watt headed wide with 17 minutes left from Cornelius’ cross, but the hosts were still strong on the counter and got their second.

After good intercchange on the edge of the area, substitute McGill sent an unstoppable drive into the top-left corner of the net.

Billy Reid, one of our famous Ancell Babes, has died at the age of 83.

The inside-right signed for the club on his 17th birthday, with his forms being signed at his home in Craigneuk in the presence of manager George Stevenson.

Reid went on to make 73 appearances, scoring 11 goals, before leaving for Airdrieonians in 1961.

He remained a big fan of the club, and was a member of our former players’ club.

Our thoughts are with his family.

We are holding open trials for our new Under 15 girls academy squad on Sunday 25 July 2021.

We are looking for players born in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009. All players must be free agents.

Trials will begin on the Fir Park astro at 1.30pm and will last until 3.30pm with registration taking place at 1.15pm.

The Motherwell boss looks ahead to the derby and trying to progress from the group stages of the Premier Sports Cup.

Motherwell will open the 2021/22 SWPL1 season on 5 September 2021 with an away game to reigning champions Glasgow City.

Our first home game will then follow on 12 September against Hibernian, before facing Champions League participants Celtic at home on 19 September.

The women of steel’s final game will be at home against newly-promoted Aberdeen on 15 May 2022.

Gill Inglis will again be the captain of Motherwell in the 2021/22 season.

The experienced midfielder helped guide the side to a sixth-place finish last campaign and her leadership on the pitch will be required again to push the club further up the SWPL1 table.

Joining Motherwell in 2019 from Rangers, Inglis has spent more than a decade in the top flight of Scottish women’s football.

A role model for any player, Inglis has been trusted with the armband once again this season.

“I’m thrilled to have Gill as captain this season,” head coach Paul Brownlie said.

“She has displayed real leadership qualities since I joined Motherwell and she has been at the forefront in building a connection between the players and the new coaching staff since they arrived.

“I’m very excited to see what she can offer throughout the season and look forward to working closely with her for the upcoming campaign.”
