PJ Morrison has joined Falkirk on loan for the remainder of the 2020/21 campaign.

The young goalkeeper heads to the League One side as they look to win promotion to the second tier.

The move represents another important step in his development, having also recently been called into the Scotland Under 21 side.

“It is vitally important for PJ to gain valuable experience at first team level,” manager Stephen Robinson said. “That is especially true for a goalkeeper like him.

“We have no reserve fixtures this season. Because of that, we feel the development of our young players is being affected.

“The loan system is the way to bridge this gap. Instead of sitting on our bench or in the stands, they get the experience of training with us but also playing matches at a good level.”

Morrison joins Jamie Semple (Cove Rangers), Ross MacIver (Greenock Morton), Harry Robinson (Queen of the South) and Sam Muir (Gretna) in going out on loan.

Over seven months have passed since the last competitive game of football for our women’s team.

This Sunday sees the return of SWPL1, with the women of steel traveling to take on Forfar Farmington. Kick off is at 2pm.

The sides met twice before the Covid-19 pandemic brought a halt to action.

“The early weeks of the season will give us the chance to build momentum and see where it takes us, in a league which has grown massively in strength.

“We won this fixture at the start of the failed season, so we are capable of doing the same again.”

Bevis Mugabi will be out for four to six weeks with a dislocated shoulder.

The defender, who has established himself as an important figure in the Motherwell backline, suffered the injury on his return to training earlier this week.

“It is a blow to lose Bevis,” manager Stephen Robinson said.

“He has played his way into the team and acquitted himself very well.

“He just seems to be unfortunate that when he gets a run of games, he suffers an injury.”

A magnificent international break for Motherwell’s players ended on Wednesday with further success.

Declan Gallagher and Stephen O’Donnell both started again for Scotland and came home after contributing heavily to three wins and three clean sheets for the national team.

Both impressed again as Ryan Fraser’s goal was enough to defeat the Czech Republic 1-0 at Hampden in the UEFA Nations League, following on from a 1-0 win over Slovakia in the same competition and a penalties win over Israel in the UEFA Euro 2020 play-off semi-final.

Scotland now top their UEFA Nations League group as they play for promotion to League A and, should they continue their positive results, could guarantee themselves a 2022 FIFA World Cup play-off position.

Steve Clarke’s side are also preparing for their UEFA Euro 2020 play-off final match with Serbia in November, with Gallagher and O’Donnell very much in contention to take part.

Trevor Carson was prepared to be on the bench for Northern Ireland as they headed to Norway for their final UEFA Nations League match of the break.

However, an injury to Bailey Peacock-Farrell in the warm-up saw the ‘Well keeper drafted in at the last minute for his first international appearance in almost two years.

Norway won 1-0 on the night, but Carson impressed between the sticks as he looks to claim a place in the team for their UEFA Euro 2020 play-off final in November.

Barry Maguire got himself on the scoresheet for Scotland Under 21s, as they kept up the pressure at the top of their group with a 7-0 win in San Marino.

Fraser Hornby became the highest-ever scorer for the age level with a hat-trick, with ex-Well man David Turnbull also grabbing a goal.

Allan Campbell missed the game through suspension, with PJ Morrison on the bench.

Bevis Mugabi returned on Tuesday from a warm-weather training camp in Dubai, as his Uganda side gear up for crucial AFCON qualifiers in November.

Two Motherwell loanees lined up against each other on their debuts in the Betfred Cup group stages.

Ross MacIver played the full 90 minutes for Morton, with Harry Robinson coming on as a substitute for Queen of the South, in a 2-2 draw last midweek.

Robinson was then an unused substitute at the weekend as Queens surrendered a two-goal lead at home to St Mirren to draw 2-2, before failing to take the bonus point on penalties.

Jamie Semple got his first top team minutes in 14 months as he made his debut for Cove Rangers at the weekend.

The midfielder replaced former ‘Well man Adam Livingstone as the League One side lost a one-goal lead against top flight Hibernian, being defeated 2-1.

He then followed that up with a goal against Brora Rangers on Tuesday night, in a match which ended level before Cove took the bonus point on penalties.

Young goalkeeper Matty Connolly was also on the bench for Falkirk as they lost 2-0 at Dunfermline Athletic in the same competition on Friday night, and again in the 2-1 win over Clyde on Tuesday.

In the Lowland League, Sam Muir made his bow for Gretna on Saturday as they lost 2-1 at home to Spartans, before also featuring in the 6-1 loss at East Kilbride on Tuesday.
