Bevis Mugabi will be out for four to six weeks with a dislocated shoulder.
The defender, who has established himself as an important figure in the Motherwell backline, suffered the injury on his return to training earlier this week.
“It is a blow to lose Bevis,” manager Stephen Robinson said.
“He has played his way into the team and acquitted himself very well.
“He just seems to be unfortunate that when he gets a run of games, he suffers an injury.”
A magnificent international break for Motherwell’s players ended on Wednesday with further success.

Aaron Chapman has joined Motherwell until the end of the 2020/21 season.
The 30-year-old English goalkeeper joins on a free transfer, having left Peterborough United in the summer. His move remains subject to international clearance.
“Aaron comes in to give us experienced cover and competition for Trevor,” manager Stephen Robinson said.
“He has played a high number of games at a good level in England, so will prove a valuable addition.
“Importantly, this will also open the door for us to put PJ Morrison on loan. We want to do that so he can gain valuable experience at first team level and we hope to announce a move for him shortly.
“That is vitally important for all young players but especially goalkeepers, who have a limited opportunity.
“Without reserve games, the development of our young players would be affected if we did not take that step. Going out on loan is the perfect way to bridge the gap.”
The 6ft 7in Chapman joined Chesterfield in 2013 from non-league side Belper Town.
Loan moves to Chester, Accrington Stanley and Bristol Rovers followed, before making the permanent switch to Accrington in 2016, where we won the League Two title in 2017/18.
A transfer to Peterborough United followed that summer, making 39 appearances before a short-term spell at Tranmere Rovers on loan.
