Motherwell Football Club is delighted to announce that it has repaid its debts to former owners John Boyle and Les Hutchison.

Following the transition to the current fan-ownership model in October 2016, the club has been able to repay both parties through effective player trading.

The final outstanding balances have been settled with both. In total, over £1,500,000 has been paid back over the period.

The repayment to both individuals marks a significant milestone in the club’s move towards long-term viability.

The only external debt now owed by the club is to five Motherwell-supporting individuals. It totals around £80,000, with extremely favourable repayment terms that the club anticipates will be cleared soon.

“From the moment the Well Society took over the majority interest in Motherwell Football Club, our collective energy has been firmly focused on ensuring the club is sustainable on a medium to long-term basis,” Motherwell FC chairman Jim McMahon said.

“A key part of that has been eliminating the debt we inherited and we have now almost achieved that. For the club to have paid back such a significant amount in just over two years is a remarkable feat.

“I want to thank those who have worked so hard to help us achieve that, including chief executive Alan Burrows, the management, coaching and recruitment staff, the current board of directors at the club, as well as the Well Society board, members and Motherwell supporters.

“I also thank John Boyle and Les Hutchison for their support over the years.

“It has been a collective effort, helped enormously by everyone working together, on and off the park, towards the same common goal. I would also like to thank the individuals who continue to support the club with the small amount left to repay in soft loans.”

Douglas Dickie, joint-chair of the Well Society added: “It has been an excellent achievement by all involved to get to this stage where both John Boyle and Les Hutchison are no longer owed any money by our club. The Well Society and its members have played a big part in that.

“This is an opportunity for the Society now, as the owners of Motherwell FC, to re-evaluate our goals and plan the way forward.

“It is as important as ever now for our members and all Motherwell supporters to get behind what the Well Society are doing, to ensure we can continue to support and improve the club.”

Having impressed during their first year back in the top flight, Livingston are looking to progress in 2019/20.

Early signs are that they are capable of doing so, with another strong start to the campaign.

The story so far

The Lions are currently sixth in the Ladbrokes Premiership table after the first round of fixtures – producing some strong performances along the way.

Last month’s 2-0 success over Celtic at the Tony Macaroni Arena gathered positive headlines across the country and it was a game where Gary Holt’s side showed their battling spirit.

But there was more to the victory that. All over the pitch they battled harder than their opponents, they are direct, physical and ruthlessly effective.

Despite the success over the champions, Holt urged his side to step up their performance levels, after witnessing a drop off in results following on from a strong start and his side have responded with better displays in the draws against Hearts and Hibernian.

Livingston host Rangers next Sunday before visiting Celtic Park following the international break, so the upcoming run of fixtures will be a big test of Holt’s side. They were forced to settle for a share of the spoils on Wednesday night despite leading Hibs 2-0 at Easter Road and they visit Fir Park today having won just one of their last seven league fixtures.

The previous meeting between Livingston and Motherwell this season ended in a drab goalless draw on the opening day. ‘Well came out on top in two of the three clashes between the two teams at Fir Park in 2018-19, with the game in October 2018 finishing 1-1.

Three to watch

Nicky Devlin

After dropping down the leagues following his release by Motherwell in the summer of 2013, Nicky Devlin has progressed back through the ranks of the game to return to the top level of Scottish football.

Devlin joined Stenhousemuir after leaving Fir Park and a season later moved on to Ayr United. He made over 100 league appearances for the Honest Men before heading down south to join Walsall where he would establish himself as a regular.

Walsall were relegated from League One last season and despite being offered a new contract with The Saddlers, the 26-year-old opted to return to Scotland and join Livingston. He has played in all but one of their Scottish Premiership fixtures so far this season and despite missing the midweek clash with Hibernian, he’s expected to return to the Livi squad for today’s fixture.

Keaghan Jacobs

Livingston’s all-time record appearance holder Keaghan Jacobs was rewarded with his testimonial match last month.

Jacobs has made over 300 appearances across two spells with the Lions and in scoring in the 2-0 win against Motherwell last season, the South African midfielder became the first player to have scored for the club in each of the four professional leagues in Scotland.

The 30-year-old isn’t the only member of the Jacobs family to have pulled on a yellow jersey, in fact he once he only makes up 25%. As Livingston faced Albion Rovers in April 2010, Keaghan lined up alongside his triplet brothers Devon, Kyle and Sheldon – the first time that four brothers had featured in a senior match.

Lyndon Dykes

A standout performer in Livi’s 2-0 victory over Celtic was powerful forward Lyndon Dykes with the 24-year-old notching the decisive second goal by looping the ball over the head of Fraser Forster.

Such was the impression made by Dykes, he was tipped for an unexpected call-up to Steve Clarke’s Scotland squad for the fixtures against Russia and San Marino. He would find himself overlooked on this occasion, though if he keeps up his current performance levels then it won’t be long before the former Queen of the South man is pulling on the dark blue of Scotland.

Born in Australia, Dykes qualifies to play for Scotland through his parents who were both born in Dumfries. So far this season he has contested more aerial duels than any other player in the Scottish Premiership.

On the win over Kilmarnock

“It was a different game on Wednesday. We dominated the ball. We dominated the game, which we should have done with 11 men against 10 and we got a very good result against a really resilient Kilmarnock side.

“We have to be at the top of our game to make sure that the three points doesn’t go to waste and we can continue our good form.

“I gave the boys a challenge. Can we get six points from these two games?

“The first hurdle was a tough one. It took a lot of patience to break Kilmarnock down. So we go in with a lot of confidence. We are playing well, but it’s a different task.”

On Livingston

“It’s a really big challenge for us again. I’ve got a lot of admiration for Livingston. They take a little bit of stick for how they play.

“They play by being direct and being physical but you know, I always say that’s fantasy. You play what your players allow you to play. They are very good at what they do and they play a lot more football than people give them credit for.

“So we’re in for a really tough game and we have to be up for that kind of physical battle.

“They are effective at what they do. They got a brilliant result away at Hibs and they’ve been picking up results and surprising people. I watched their game against Rangers at Livi and they’re a very good side.

“I’ve a lot of admiration. They’ve got a real good work ethic about them and boys that give absolutely everything for the manager and the team. So there’s a lot to be admired about them.”

On building a winning team

“We’ve got young boys that are improving. They’ve got real belief about them.

“They play with freedom. Sometimes too much freedom. I’m trying to rein them back at times. Like when you’re 2-1 up with two seconds to go and we’re still bombing forward and we’ve got six in the box against Kilmarnock’s two.

“There’s a real raw enthusiasm. We play off the cuff at times and there’s a lot of invention.

“Who knows how far we can go. I’ve got a belief in them. I really believe they’ll keep improving. They are young players taking on board the stuff we are working with them on and it’s exciting times.”

Ally Maxwell is the second inductee to the Motherwell FC Hall of Fame.

Having come through the ranks at the club, the goalkeeper made 153 appearances over eight years and was a member of the 1991 Scottish Cup winning squad.

His performance in that final was vital in the team claiming silverware, soldiering on after a heavy collision with John Clark which was later discovered to have caused a ruptured spleen.

Joining the club in 1981 from Fir Park Boys Club, he was given his first taste of top team action by Bobby Watson in April 1984.

He played every minute in the run to the final in 1991, before leaving the club in 1992 for Rangers, via a short loan spell at Bolton Wanderers.

He will be formally inducted at a dinner at the Bothwell Bridge Hotel on Saturday, 23 November, along with Willie Pettigrew and three others.

2019/20 Motherwell streaming service matches

Motherwell host their second Ladbrokes Premiership in four days on Saturday, as Livingston visit Fir Park.

The Steelmen jumped back up to third in the league with victory over Kilmarnock in midweek.

Kick off at Fir Park is at 3pm.

Tale of the tape

Both sides are in the top six going into the weekend encounter, with Motherwell sitting six points ahead of sixth-placed Livingston.

Victory over Kilmarnock arrested a two-game losing streak for Stephen Robinson’s side, and took them to six wins out of 11 in the league this season.

Livingston were 2-0 up at Hibernian on Wednesday night before being pegged back at the death to draw 2-2.

They’ve won one of their last five – a spectacular 2-0 home win over Celtic. Draws against Hearts and Hibernian followed, as well as away defeats to Hamilton Academical and Kilmarnock.

Head to head

Five have come in the league, with Motherwell winning two. Two draws and a home win for the Lions have also been registered.

Allan Campbell, Barry Maguire and James Scott are again in the Scotland Under 21 squad for their forthcoming European Championship qualifier with Greece.

The Motherwell trio have earned their recall to Scot Gemmill’s selection, as they push to stay top of their qualifying group.

The game against Greece will be played at Tynecastle Park on 15 November.

Liam Donnelly and Devante Cole netted as Motherwell returned to third in the Ladbrokes Premiership with a 2-1 win over Kilmarnock.

Motherwell claimed another three points and jumped back to third in the league with a 2-1 home win over Kilmarnock.

Liam Donnelly and Devante Cole’s goals, sandwiched by a speculative Dominic Thomas effort, got the Steelmen back to winning ways.

In a return to the more familiar 4-5-1 shape, Jermaine Hylton joined the attack with defender Bevis Mugabi dropping out as the central defence went down from three to two.

Kilmarnock had pre-match doubts over defender Dario Del Fabro after sustaining a knock at the weekend, but the Italian was named in Angelo Alessio’s starting team. But, late on in the warmup, he was ruled out and Connor Johnson was called in from the bench.

Motherwell had impressed at Ibrox at the weekend before ultimately losing out, and the confidence from the showing against a bigger-budget side played through into the opening exchanges.

Positive attacking play at pace had the Fir Park crowd’s spirits raised and the breakthrough would come in slightly controversial circumstances after 15 minutes.

Christopher Long got the better of the defence as he burst through on goal, with Alex Bruce making a desperate last-ditch lunge to stop him going one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

The defender felt he got a touch on the ball as Long was scythed down, but referee Don Robertson was right on the spot to award a free kick and show the red card to the Kilmarnock man.

Motherwell would immediately profit. Donnelly, taking a brief break from the incredible scoring start to the season, rolled the free kick under the wall and into the net, despite goalkeeper Branescu’s best efforts to keep it out.

The hosts continued to press, harassing Killie as they tried to play out from the back and launching wave after wave of attack.

Then, with the clock just past the half hour mark, Kilmarnock would get an unexpected route back into the game.

Thomas cut in from the right and was still a long way from goal as he fizzed a ball in low across the face of goal. Hartley couldn’t get there and the ball sailed into the bottom left corner of the net.

The pace of Motherwell’s attacking play slowed slightly, even if the urgency didn’t as they continued to press to go in at the break ahead, but the visitors stood firm.

Stephen Robinson’s men set out with the same attacking intent in the second period and got the goal that would prove decisive with nine minutes of the half gone.

Jake Carroll got to the byline on the left and, with players queuing up, Cole rose highest to nod the ball into the ground and into the net.

Motherwell continued to retain the bulk of possession but Kilmarnock continued to threaten on the counter, putting the hearts of the mouths of home supporters on a number of occasions.

With the clock running down, Mark Gillespie had to keep out a goalbound effort from Eamonn Brophy, and James Scott saw a late counter attacking effort wasted.

The Steelmen though would hold out, jumping back to third in the league.
