Motherwell will take on either Hutchison Vale or Inverness CT in the fourth round of the SSE Scottish Women’s Cup.

After defeating title-chasing SWPL2 side Partick Thistle at the weekend, Donald Jennow’s side will play hosts at Ravenscraig on Sunday, 25 August. A kick-off time will be announced shortly.

Hutchison Vale and Inverness CT will play each other on 18 August to determine which team will take on last year’s finalists.

Motherwell have already faced Hutchison Vale in the SWPL Cup this season, winning 13-0 away to progress against the SWPL2 side.

Inverness CT play in the third tier, and currently sit fifth in their table, nine points behind Aberdeen.

Motherwell’s Colts side bowed out of the Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer Cup with a 4-0 loss at Clyde on Tuesday night.

A youthful Steelmen squad held their own in large spells against League One opposition, but struggled to create telling chances and were punished by their opponents.

It took five minutes for the experienced hosts to take the lead.

A long throw was flicked on at the front post and over the heads of the Motherwell defence. David Goodwillie was waiting to put the ball into the net from close range on the right side of the goal.

Clyde continued to test PJ Morrison in the visiting goal, before the youthful Steelmen started to settle into possession. But they failed to open up the home defence to seriously test David Mitchell in goal.

After a balanced start to the second half, a decisive counter attack doubled the hosts’ advantage.

A breakaway following a loose pass in the middle set Goodwillie scampering clear.

His shot came back off the right post and into the path of Ally Love, who steered home into the empty net.

It didn’t take long for the third to come. Ally Love’s corner from the right drifted over everyone and Martin McNiff was there at the back post to head it in.

PJ Morrison had to stand tall on several occasions in one v one situations to keep the score down, as Clyde went hunting to add to their three-goal advantage.

The fourth came with five to play. A free-kick from the left made it to the box unchecked, and McNiff netted his second, with the ball bouncing up past a helpless Morrison.

Liam Donnelly has been named as the Tullibardine Motherwell player of the month for July.

The midfielder won the public vote after finding the back of the net four times in three Betfred Cup group stage games.

He has since continued his form into the new month, netting two goals against Celtic to take his tally to the season to six.

It’s back to cup football on Friday night, as Hearts visit Motherwell in the last 16 of the Betfred Cup.

Tale of the tape

Hearts and Motherwell both sit with a point in the Ladbrokes Premiership from two games so far, having drawn with Ross County and Livingston respectively.

In the Betfred Cup, Hearts went into the last 16 draw unseeded after progressing as group winners with nine points. They beat Stenhousemuir and Cowdenbeath, before taking a bonus point after a draw with Dundee United, and taking a point at East Fife.

Motherwell had a 100% record in their group, beating Queen of the South, Morton, Dumbarton and Annan Athletic, scoring 13 goals and conceding none along the way.

Head to head

Hearts have won three of the last five meetings between the two clubs, with Motherwell winning the other two.

The last encounter came at Fir Park in February, with David Turnbull’s last-minute winner sealing victory for the Steelmen in the league.

The visitors won the last cup match between the two, which came in the 2018/19 Betfred Cup quarter finals at Tynecastle. In an end-to-end game, Craig Levein’s side eventually prevailed 4-2.

After defeating Spartans 1-0 in the first round on Wednesday night, the youngsters will make the trip to Broadwood on Tuesday, 13 August. Kick off is at 7.45pm.

Motherwell made it through in the SSE Scottish Women’s Cup with a 2-0 win after extra time over Partick Thistle.

Goals from Katie Rice and Chelsea McEachran broke the deadlock in the first half of the additional 30, after the game ended goalless after 90 minutes.

The Jags were predicted to prove stubborn opposition, as one of the clubs at the top pushing for promotion from SWPL2.

Donald Jennow’s Motherwell however were finalists last campaign whilst a second-tier side themselves, and were in no mood to go out at the first time of asking this season.

But they were pushed all the way by the Glasgow side, before prevailing when Rice and McEachran both netted with shots from the edge of the box.

The women of steel now head into the last 16 of the competition. With their opponents yet to be announced, the next tie is due to be played on Sunday 25 August. The SWPL1 home match with Glasgow City on the same date will now be rearranged.

Partick Thistle, meanwhile, sit two points off the pace in SWPL2, behind joint leaders Hamilton and Hearts.

The Jags have netted 17 times in their last three games without reply, with 16 coming in back-to-back wins over Hutchison Vale.

Manager sees cup chance to boost confidence

Donald Jennow saw his side take a point in their last outing in the league, but is mindful of the test Thistle will pose.

“Partick Thistle have aspirations to get to the top flight and their are in good form coming to face us,” he said.

“But with the changes we’ve made over the summer, and the confidence we got from the result last week, has put a spring in our step.

“It will be a very difficult test. But we have a cup pedigree and we’re hopeful that if we play to our strengths, we can get the result.”
