    Previewing Kilmarnock v Motherwell

    Previewing Kilmarnock v Motherwell

After a long winning run was ended on Sunday, Motherwell have the chance to get straight back to form at Kilmarnock on Wednesday night.

Kick off at Rugby Park is at 7.45pm. Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the match.

    Tale of the tape

Motherwell were on a six-game winning run before a spirited performance ended in defeat at Celtic on Sunday.

Steve Clarke’s men are without a win in their last seven in all competitions, drawing three and losing four. Their last win came in January, when they picked up back-to-back wins over Forfar Athletic and Rangers.

The Killie boss, however, has a 100% record over Motherwell in the four games he’s faced us.

    Team news

Motherwell remain without Trevor Carson, Chris Cadden and Craig Tanner. Christian Mbulu and Ross McCormack are also still sidelined.

    Setting the scene on Kilmarnock

Kilmarnock lie in wait on Wednesday night, as Motherwell head to Rugby Park looking to end their winless run against the Ayrshire club.

Here’s an early look ahead to the match.

    Head to head

Motherwell’s six-game winning run ended at Celtic on Sunday, but their performance showed that there’s plenty potential to get back to form on Wednesday night.

Kilmarnock sit fourth in the Premiership but their form has taken a dip of late.

Steve Clarke’s men are without a win in their last seven in all competitions, drawing three and losing four.

The Kilmarnock manager has a 100% record over the Steelmen, winning all four encounters.

    Reserves reach League Cup final

    Reserves reach League Cup final

Maurice Ross says the rate at which his youngsters are developing is exciting for everyone at the club.

Motherwell’s reserves ran out 2-0 winners over St Johnstone on Monday, reaching the SPFL Reserve League Cup final with Hearts.

“I’m delighted for the players getting to the final,” he said. “They deserved it.

“We’ve gone toe-to-toe with them and deserved it. It could maybe have been 2-1, they had a few half chances.

“There is so much goes into what they are doing there. It’s not a case of turning up. It’s all planned, the majority of it.

“They are so loyal and humble. They are desperate for knowledge, and it makes my job easy.

“It’s mainly about development. But when they are developing at that rate, I am excited.”

Late goals from George Newell and Akeel Rehman were the difference between the two sides.

A youthful second string played well in an even first half, but grew into things further as the game wore on.

With 12 minutes to go, substitute Stuart McKinstry brilliantly dummied to send two defenders the wrong way on the inside left of the box. His low cross was then met by Newell, whose scuffed shot went past a helpless visiting goalkeeper.

As St Johnstone gambled on an equaliser, McKinstry was again the provider from the left for Rehman. Getting a second bite at it, he fired home just before the full time whistle to secure progression.

Motherwell: Morrison, MacDonald, Devine, Hussain, Livingstone, McAlear (Liam Brown), Cornelius (Kettings), Rehman, Newell, Semple (McKinstry), Starrs.

Subs not used: Hemfrey, Bowers, Watson, Jack Brown.

    ‘Well progress in SWPL Cup

    ‘Well progress in SWPL Cup

Motherwell produced a stunning goal scoring display as they cruised into the last eight of the SWPL Cup with a 13-0 victory over Hutchison Vale.

Lori Gardner hit four goals and Mhairi Fyfe grabbed a hat-trick, along with doubles from Caitlin Russell, Katie Rice and Chelsea McEachran.

The ‘Well got off to the best possible start, attacking from the off and Rice fired high into the net to open the scoring in the opening minute.

After 12 minutes they would double their lead, Rice was felled inside the box and Fyfe converted the resulting penalty.

Five minutes later Gardner got in on the scoring act and Rice would add her second of the game just before the half hour mark.

‘Well were flying and the goals kept coming, Fyfe netting twice more from the spot before the break.

The 6-0 score at half time didn’t flatter the women of steel and they showed no signs of taking their foot off the gas as the second half got underway.

Russell poked home from close range into the bottom corner in the 48th minute to make it seven and Gardner added Motherwell’s eighth and her second of the game just after the hour mark.

Fyfe tapped home from close range to make it 9-0 and the scoreline moved into double figures, when second half substitute McEachran drove right at the heart of the defence, before picking her spot in the bottom left corner to finish off a great individual effort.

The goals kept coming and Russell stroked home after Fyfe was denied by a good stop by Claire Whitaker in the home goal.

McEarchran got her second with 15 minutes. A lovely ball over the top by Kirsten Rolph looked to have been dealt with by the Hutchie Vale defence, but the midfielder battled back and used her strength to force the opportunity for the shot. Despite being off balance, she managed to find the goal.

With five minutes to play Gardner bagged her hat-trick. Intercepting the loose ball at the back, she managed to beat the keeper before finishing into an empty net to extend the lead to 13.

The score would remain unchanged as a dominant ‘Well side blew away the Edinburgh side with an emphatic win to progress to the quarter-finals of the cup.
