Motherwell FC is on the hunt for a new Head Groundsperson.

This is an exciting opportunity to make a significant contribution at one of the country’s top football clubs.

The ideal candidate should have a minimum five years practical experience and have not only a get up and go attitude but, importantly, be a decision maker with a working knowledge of stadium pitch management.

This is a great opportunity to continue the excellent improvements made by Mikey Ellis over the last few years.

You will need excellent qualifications and experience in turf industry as well as organisation skills and a good eye for detail.

This is a high profile role and applicants must be resilient, assertive, flexible and able to work under pressure. The ability to establish relationships and communicate effectively with people at all levels is essential.

 Extended highlights from St Mirren Park as the Under 20s beat Saints 5-1 in the SPFL Development League.

Motherwell U20s returned to winning ways in spectacular style, winning 1-5 at St Mirren Park this evening.

Mark O’Brien and Bob McHugh gave the Steelmen a commanding first-half lead, before Kieran Sadlier reduced the deficit on the stroke of half time.

However, it wouldn’t deter Jonatan Johansson’s men, who went on to win handsomely, with further goals coming from Craig Moore and a Dom Thomas double.

‘Well made four changes to the side that lost narrowly to St Johnstone last midweek. Jack McMillan, Stuart Carswell, Ben Hall and Dylan Mackin dropped out, replaced by Fraser Kerr, Jack Leitch, O’Brien and Moore.

And Motherwell took the lead after just seven minutes; however, it wasn’t the first chance of the game.

Saints stopper Mark Fodden brilliantly turned around Moore’s close range header, but he was powerless to stop the next effort when, from the resulting corner, Mark O’Brien bulleted home Dom Thomas’ cross.

Kerr almost made it two with another header from a Thomas corner, whilst Saints’ first effort of the game came through Lewis Morgan, but his long-range effort sailed high over the crossbar.

Motherwell continued to press but it was Saints who were presented with a great opportunity to level when referee Stephen Brown adjudged Luke Watt to have pushed Sadlier in the area. Former Ross County Yoann Arquin stepped up, but he screwed it wide of the post, and bizarrely though an advertising board!

Dom Thomas had couple of half chances with shots from distance before Bob McHugh doubled the Steelmen’s advantage after 36 minutes.

Luke Watt was the architect, sending a lovely ball over the top in between the Saints’ backline and Fodden. McHugh nipped between both, rounded the keeper and slotted the ball into an empty net.

It looked at that stage as if ‘Well might run away with the game, particularly when Nathan Thomas came close to adding a third, only to be stopped by an excellent defensive block.

However, Saints got back into the game seconds before the half-time interval. Callum Ball sprung the offside trap and hared into the box. He was thwarted by the diving Brett Long, but still was able to prod it back to Sadlier who smashed home from an acute angle.

Undeterred, ‘Well made a positive start to the second period and McHugh was unlucky not to add a third with a low shot just wide, before Ross MacLean thundered a long-range shot that forced Fodden to parry.

Saints’ goal was leading a charmed life and they had Jordan Stewart to thank for an excellent clearance on the line, when he got back behind his keeper to somehow deny McHugh a brace.

However, a third looked inevitable and when it came, it was a thing of beauty.

McHugh’s turn took two out the game, before dinking it forward to Jack Leitch whose deft back heel flick for the supporting Moore was exquisite, allowing the striker to race in on goal. His powerful shot was parried by Fodden, only for Dom Thomas to smash high into the net from close range.

The Steelmen sensed blood and went for more goals, Fodden having to look smart to deny both Leitch and Nathan Thomas from distance, but again, he was helpless to stop ‘Well adding a fourth.

Leitch’s quick-thinking free-kick played Moore in over the top, and he unleashed a stunning strike high into the top corner to confirm the win.

If goals three and four were out the top drawer then goal five, some six minutes later was, well, the opposite. McHugh and Thomas combined down the left and when the latter eventually sent a cutback for his wing partner, Thomas Reilly blocked his shot before Mark William’s attempted clearance cannoned off the 19-year old and squirmed past the despairing Fodden.

It was a goal that summed up a miserable night for the Buddies. Johansson would have been delighted with his side, who returned to winning ways in convincing style.

HELP SAFEGUARD YOUR CLUB, JOIN THE WELL SOCIETY

As you know, in February Les Hutchison provided your club with an initial loan of £650,000.

In addition, to help the club improve the playing squad plus the scouting and medical set ups, Les has injected another substantial sum into the club. But, he wants his loans repaid.

Les’ loans are repaid by the club at regular intervals. If it runs out of cash to repay the loan temporarily, the ‘Well Society has agreed to cover any shortfall as part of a joint loan repayment agreement.

If both the club and the Well Society are unable to repay Les Hutchison’s loan he will ultimately have to sell the club to recoup his loan. However, no suitable buyer emerged in several years after John Boyle put the club up for sale and the only other option in recent months was a foreign consortium. We run the risk of the club falling into the wrong hands or, in the worst-case scenario, Les would have the option of triggering an insolvency event to recoup his money.

Currently, the society does not have enough reserves to be able to guarantee that it can always provide sufficient cash when the club might need it over the period of the loan. To ensure that it is able to cover any shortfalls the society needs to raise more than twice as much cash as it has thus far. To safeguard the club the society must recruit an additional 1,000 new adult members.

As Chairman of your club and also Chairman of the Well Society, whose mission is to help the club financially through thick and thin, I am appealing to every Motherwell fan to support the club by joining the ‘Well Society. By paying the equivalent of one cup of coffee a week you and I, together, will be able to avoid the worst case scenario.

In a similar way that fans in the Foundation of Hearts are paying Ann Budge for her shares, Motherwell fans can repay Les Hutchison’s loan by paying regular monthly payments by direct debit to the Well Society.

The society membership has raised over £500,000 in two years, which is a tremendous achievement for the Motherwell fans involved. It is not beyond the bounds of possibility therefore that with your help it can raise another £500,000 and more over the next 5 years.

Hearts fans pay on average nearly £20 per month by direct debit to save their club. I am appealing to all Motherwell fans to pay at least £10 or more by direct debit to save Motherwell FC and place it in the hands of those who care for it most.

Motherwell manager Ian Baraclough admitted the outcome was painful but was heartened by his team’s first half display.

The Steelmen were in control during the first-half, taking the lead when Scott McDonald turned in Lee Erwin’s low shot.

But a barmy two minutes, when ‘Well lost a goal from a corner before a defensive mix-up between George Long and Louis Laing gave Adam Rooney a tap in for the winner.

It was painful for everyone in Claret and Amber, but Baraclough was remaining positive.

He said: “It’s a sore one to take because for 45 minutes, that was as good as we have played since I have been here.

“We have shown that we can be a good team and made a very good team in Aberdeen change their system and personnel because they could not get to grips with us.

“All of a sudden, we switched off at a set-piece which has been our Achilles heel and it set us on the back foot and then after a little bit of panic, we find ourselves 2-1 down.”

J.Twigg at Pittodrie

A crazy two minutes cost Motherwell dearly at Pittodrie as the Dons run out 2-1 winners.

Scott McDonald diverted in a Lee Erwin shot to give the visitors a deserved interval lead but Ash Taylor and Adam Rooney scored in quick succession early in the second half to hand the Dons victory.

It was hard on the Steelmen, who could have gone into the break with a more commanding lead than the one they had earned through McDonald.

With Donvervorn Daniels anchoring the midfield, Ryan Jack was able to push forward and he went close in the seventh minute after collecting a David Goodwillie pass, curling an 18-yard shot just over the crossbar. Moments later, the same player shot straight at George Long from 25 yards.

The hosts struggled to get into a rhythm in the early stages but they did carve out an opening for Kenny McLean in the 21st minute. Shay Logan picked out Goodwillie, who in turn found the former St Mirren starlet – but he could not keep his effort down from 14 yards.

Motherwell gave as good as they got and, after Erwin sliced wide, they should have gone in front in the 29th minute. After a mix-up in the hosts backline, Erwin got in behind the Dons defence but Jamie Langfield came racing out of his goal to spread himself and make a goal-saving block.

However, Aberdeen failed to heed the warning and trailed after 37 minutes. Erwin was allowed to move forward unchallenged and his shot from just outside the box was cleverly flicked by McDonald on route and the ball found the bottom corner.

The Steelmen’s lead would have been short-lived but for an impressive save from Long, who dived to his right to keep out McLean’s downward header.

Aberdeen drew level though six minutes into the second half from a corner. Niall McGinn’s deep delivery found the unmarked Taylor, whose header from eight yards was brilliantly saved by Long – but the ball squirmed from his grasp and into the net.

Rooney then profited on a defensive blunder two minutes to give the Dons the lead.

On loan Sheffield Utd goalkeeper Long charged out of his box to try to clear the danger but got into a mix-up with Louis Laing and Rooney nipped in to tap into an empty net.

From looking assured and well organised in the first period, the visiting defence had quickly become ragged and they nearly conceded again in the 65th minute when McGinn drove a low angled shot just wide from Goodwillie’s lay-off.

In an effort to get back into the game, ‘Well manager Ian Baraclough turned to substitutes John Sutton and Lionel Ainsworth and although the latter screwed a late shot wide, Aberdeen saw out the match to keep alive their title bid.
