Motherwell FC was today saddened to learn of the passing of former Director and life-long fan, John Swinburne.
John was born in the United States but grew up and was educated in Motherwell, where his love affair with all things Claret and Amber began.
John held a number of roles within Fir Park, including Commercial Manager, before joining the Board of Directors in 2000, where he served with distinction until stepping down in 2015. Amongst other things, John also wrote several historical books about Motherwell FC, many of which are still read and enjoyed to this day.
John enjoyed a long and rewarding life, none more so than when he was elected to the Scottish Parliament back in 2003 on the list vote for Central Scotland, representing the SSCUP, a party he had helped form to represent the interest of senior citizens.
John passed away this morning aged 87 after a short but challenging illness.
Everyone at Motherwell Football Club would like to extend our deepest condolences to John’s family and friends at this sad time.
At the same time, the club remembers a loyal, dedicated, enthusiastic and talented supporter that went over and above for the team he loved.
Rest in Peace, John.
